1963 VFA 1st Division Grand Final
Moorabbin v Sandringham

Moorabbin 19.16 130 d Sandringham 9.12 66
at Port Melbourne Cricket Ground
Attendance 15,000 on 21 September 1963

Part 1:
Part 2:
Part 3:

This was the last time Moorabbin played in the VFA for 20 years. With St.Kilda moving to the Moorabbin Oval from the start of the 1965 season meant that Moorabbin were losing their ground, and would mean that they would be booted out of the VFA.

Video of the 1971 1st Division VFA Grand Final
between Dandenong v Preston

Dandenong 14.14 98 d Preston 13.14 92
Attendance: 14,529

The 1971 VFA 1st Division Grand Final was held on Sunday 26 September 1971 at the Junction Oval in St Kilda to decide the 1st Division Premiership for 1971, but it would take until Wednesday evening to official declare Dandenong Premiers.

The match was one of the most controversial in the history of the VFA. Dandenong won the match by six points; however, Preston challenged the result, on the grounds that a free kick paid to Dandenong full-forward Jim 'Frosty' Miller before the opening bounce was not valid under the rules of the game. It was not until Preston's challenge was defeated on the evening of Wednesday 29 September that Dandenong was formally confirmed as premiers. It was Dandenong's second VFA Division 1 premiership.

This thread isn't just for me to put old VFA pictures up. Everyone can put up their pictures and memories of the old VFA. This thread is to keep the memories of the old VFA alive. Put your memories and pictures here so we can all remember how football once was.

wizardwaffle, you may like to recommend that people go to the boylesfootballphotos.net.au website and have a look at our photos of the various VFA clubs.

You did not bring through our comments on the photos about where we found them which some people may like to know. For example, the Brighton team photo is from my own collection but most of the others I photographed in the State Library of Victoria or scanned from a private collection.

Knowing the source is useful for people who want to cite the photo in an article, or to track down the original. In many cases the original sites have further information about the photos.

People may want to check out our Preston Page which has a great collection of old team photos many supplied by Brian Membrey.

We would also appreciate a link so that people know about the work we are doing over on the boyles site. We are always interested in collecting old VFA team photos and if anyone has some, please send them our way.

We don't hold copyrighted images on our site. For example the 1986 Sunshine team is copyright to Barry Searle and we would not publish the photo without his permission....and I know...we live in the dark ages...

Nice work but the graphics are a bit of a browser clogger. (Quite a bit especially for those with slower connections.)
coburg_zps45de1410.png

This is reduced to width of 1024 px and saved as a 256 colour PNG file . It is 118kb. (Appears to be about 1/5th the size of the original.)
Freeware program Irfanview (with free RIOT plug-in) does the job. http://www.irfanview.com/

Note too: Opening graphic has the VFA starting in 1887 instead of 1877.
