CODE sports 24Nov
Richmond VFL has set down the welcome mat for Uni Blues 2025 team-of-the-year wingman Kane Loftus.
The 25-year-old made a big impression with his pace and precise ball use in amateur football this year.
Loftus was on Essendon’s VFL list in 2024 and played local football with St Mary’s in Geelong.

The Tigers have also been quick to make contact with Sandringham Dragon Rory Wright, who considered unlucky to be overlooked in the drafts, and are sizing up young St Kevin’s tall Jack Ball, who broke through for senior games this year.

Last time we got a Kane from a blues team, he went alright.... 😄

Midfielder-Defender
#9
Rory Wright

height: 183cm

weight:

D.O.B: 02-06-2007

Leagues: AFL U18 Championships, Coates Talent League Boys

STRENGTHS:

  • Clean hands
  • Kicking
  • Toughness
  • Versatility

IMPROVEMENTS:

  • Decision making
  • Speed

One of the finds of the early-season period was Rory Wright. Plying his trade for Sandringham Dragons, he cracked a relatively strong midfield group and eventually played his way into the Vic Metro squad from relative obscurity. Although, it was Wright's work late in the year that truly elevated his stocks, picking up the pieces from a steady National Championships campaign to storm up draft boards as an industrious half-back.

The left-footer possesses weapons in his bullet-like kicking and aggressive rebound run. He's strong through the core and harder than a cat's head, capable or breaking through tackles or soaring for courageous intercept marks. Whether operating along the wing, on-ball, or across half-back, Wright looks to bring the play forward and has begun to find the balance between attack and defence, especially after his backline move.

While he has plenty of traits which will translate to AFL football, Wright's lack of raw leg speed is the main knock on his game. He has also made good strides in terms of decision making - both in and out of possession. With a good combination of polish and grit, the hybrid midfielder-defender has pushed himself into the second round conversation and looms as a bargain get anywhere outside of that range. He can do serious damage.

Max Lee
Co-captain for Dandenong and a Vic Country hub member, Max experienced a great start to the season before suffering a season-ending shoulder injury. Blessed with explosive speed, Max topped the recent 20m testing and has the ability to use this attribute in games dashing off the half-back line.

On Max Lee:
“Max Lee, the other co-captain, is a little but unknown.
“He did his collarbone and missed the back end of last year. He won the 20m sprint at the Rookie Me testing the either week, the best out of the Coates League.
“He plays with real power and speed across half-back. He’s quite brave in the air and he’s probably got a mechanism that not many kids have got and that’s defensive. He’s got to learn to be a little bit better with his offensive stuff.
“But he’s going along nicely.”

A PAIR of Victorian squad inclusions headline the players pushing for representative promotions ahead of this weekend’s double-header at Marvel Stadium. Namely, Dandenong Stingrays powerhouse JayDe Varlet has earned a Vic Country call-up in preparation for the clash against South Australia on Sunday.

The explosive midfielder-forward picked up 19 disposals and five inside 50s as the Stingrays comfortably accounted for Murray Bushrangers, standing out with his athletic profile and ability to connect the lines. Having been overlooked for the squad which travelled to Western Australia, he gets his chance at home.

Varlet isn’t the only one hoping for a debut in the ‘Big V’ guernsey.

Love this ! We are unashamedly targetting explosive speed. These 2 were born 2 days apart. Be great if Max Lee was related to the General... Nostalgic I know.

One of our academy boys, who improved rapidly in the 2nd half of the season once they handed him the ruck role. Will be interesting to see what they do with him at VFL level.

It would be interesting if we signed Big K on the main list with Sampson, OHB and Lockwood in the VFL. Might make it hard for him to develop.

Yes! Sam Philp! Always liked him …. Just what the doctor ordered
