One change for the VFL this coming season is the entry of the Tasmania Devils along with St Kilda Reserves, and the departure of the Northern Bullants.

While St Kilda's VFL record will obviously pick up from their one year in the competition way back in 2000, is the same true for Tasmania, or will this team start from scratch and not have the win/loss/draw record of the Tasmania Devils team that played in the VFL from 2001-2008?

Another one I'm not sure of is the Gold Coast, with the Suns in their development year of 2010 playing in the VFL. Does this team count as the same as the Gold Coast Suns VFL team which entered in 2021 following the demise of the NEAFL, or are they considered separate teams? For example does the Suns' WLD VFL record against Sandringham include matches it played against the Zebras in 2010, or only from 2021 onwards?

I would say they both count from their earlier stints

In the case of Tasmania I would think not. The two clubs might share a name (and home grounds, temporarily) but are still different entities. The modern Tasmania Devils are a new club built from scratch. It's not unlike the Moorabbin VFA club that existed in the 80s - they took the name and colours of the original Moorabbin Football Club (which had been booted from the VFL and folded in 1965) but were a different club built from the ground up rather than a continuation.

Another club stabbed by the Saints

VFL CLUBS TO BE HANDED BLUEPRINT

Expect the AFL to set out a clear pathway over the next three years for stand-alone teams and interstate sides in the VFL.

The cost of an eastern seaboard competition is prohibitive and in an ideal world the NSW and Queensland-based teams would play in their own leagues.

The six stand-alone teams in Victoria are likely to be given a blueprint as to what is required of them over the next three years.

She is no good and needs to look in her own backyard

So will Southport, Brisbane and GCS go back to the QAFL? And Swans and Giants go back to AFL Canberra?

If the cost of the eastern seaboard comp is prohibitive then surely the NEAFL doesnt make a comeback

I'm getting some very mixed messages from this. The mention of an eastern seaboard league being costly makes me wonder if an alternative arrangement may be found for the non-Victorian teams (flying teams up and down the east coast will be no small expense either.) But if the NEAFL isn't returning, then what is the plan? I was under the impression that the northern-based state leagues aren't up to the standard for AFL reserves teams.

The final paragraph has me extremely concerned. What more is the AFL going to require of us? Giving most of our list spots to undrafted Talent League players or players under 23? Producing a set amount of drafted player per year? And are our licences going to be reconsidered if we don't meet these requirements, regardless of our on-field and off-field viability?

This is why there will never be a national ressies comp with standalones , the cost

The real solution needs to be found for the NSW and Qld clubs. The VFL thing was silly and wasn’t ever going to be permanent.

I suspect we’ll see a return to the VFL of AFL Reserves, joint ventures (Box Hill and Casey) and standalones.

I think the standalones will need to be able to show that they’re financially sustainable. And I suspect they will be required to list a certain number of undrafted Talent League graduates. It should be a manageable number, and they won’t be required to play them.

There is no chance that AFL sides will want to send players to those leagues and I doubt those leagues will even let that happen

Is financial sustainability not already a requirement? Frankston's license was stripped when we went into administration and Preston were booted out due to their debts. Or will the AFL be setting a new criteria to determine if a club is "sustainable?"

We'd better not be required to play them. At the end of the day these clubs exist to compete for and win premierships for their community. That's what people pay their membership fees for. The AFL should not be imposing rules that prevent clubs from fielding their best possible teams.

You never know what they’ll do, wasn’t that long ago that clubs had to play 6 players under 22 was it ?

Harvey Hooper has signed with the Giants' VFL side. Following his move to Sydney, they were able to convince him to join them instead of retiring. He's a great get for them, though it will be strange to see him playing against Port Melbourne.

He wasn't retiring , they had a better deal than the Swans

If the above is the plan, it begs the question on what they will do with the new Tasmania team coming into the VFL next year? It's not like they can drive to Melbourne grounds and vice versa; do they get back to the Tassie leagues.

That said consistency is not a word the AFL understand.
