Hearing Sandy and St Kilda have agreed to part ways at the end of the season.

Tried to suss out what was happening by having a read of vflfooty, but the sandy posters over there seem to be staying quiet until an official announcement either way.

Hearing Sandy and St Kilda have agreed to part ways at the end of the season.

That would be 16 clubs for 2018

Box Hill
Casey
Coburg
Collingwood
Essendon
Footscray
Frankston
Geelong
North Melbourne
Northern Blues
Port
Richmond
Sandringham
St Kilda
Werribee
Williamstown

This would be garbage. The sooner the VFA clubs and AFL club reserves playing in different comp, the better for all.

What I am saying is that the infrastructure, volunteers etc are already in place at the TAC teams so merging the VFL team would be fairly straight forward. And if say Sandringham Zebras had a senior team, a jnr team and a womens team it would feel much more like a club that people would want to belong to, so you would get trainers and the volunteers. No one is saying it is easy but i reckon it would be better than the current situation.
It would be better, but not possible.
TAC is funded by the AFL. Kids do not get paid. Clubs with no supporters and no money cannot suddenly come up with hundreds of thousands of dollars. And they would need triple the volunteers.
The AFL has been killing off the Victorian second level comp slowly but surely for 20 years. Sadly there is no coming back for most of the old VFA clubs.
If the VFL disappears.some clubs will be able to drop down to suburban league, but with no reserves or juniors, most will fold as sponsors will drop off if they are not getting media attention playing in the statewide comp.

So no byes? Are they planning a 20-22 week season similar to the AFL itself?

Does the shape of the VFL comp change every year? The AFL clubs want a reserves comp not a half baked 'mish mash' that pays homage to yesteryear.

Saints and Sandy sticking together next year - VFL said Sandy would not have a spot. They will want even teams so either Frankston return and ROosters stay, or both disappear for good. This will indicate which direction the comp is going.

I do not get that. It is up to St.Kilda and Sandringham to decide if they want to align.
God this whole hybrid reserves/VFA thing that been going on now for two decades has a stench that has just not gone away.

It is a croc of shit idea that someone should have flushed down toilet after first 2 or 3 years of it.

So Frankston's in. Are North and Werribee separating next season? If so what does that do to total numbers?

Frankston joins the North Melbourne reserves as new teams in the competition for 2018, with Werribee to be a standalone club.

St Kilda and Sandringham's alignment will continue, meaning there will be 16 clubs in the competition next year.

The development league – which was the reserves competition for the VFL – will not continue in 2018.

I was assuming North Ballarat were almost certainly gone.
Moving forward, I'm happy the dolphins are back & North Ballarat are staying put. Sandy & St K will work itself out in time. Perhaps next next season. 2019? Lots of things happening at AFL Victoria at the moment. Weighing it all up, I'm a happy VFL fan!

I wonder if AFL Victoria have considered the possibility with so many clubs, that a 2 division competition comes back.

Think about it.

You can have everyone playing each other twice;
Promotion/Relegation;
Even have a huge weekend of grand final footy where:

TAC Cup and VFL Womens Saturday
VFL 2nd Division and VFL 1st Division Sunday (as happened in the VFA in the 1980s)

So what happens with teams that have players coming off 5 day breaks?

With the Development League gone, there's going to be lot of surplus footballers for every club to have. You suddenly have a lot of depth.
AFL teams won't accept it is my point. You can't have the teams exclusively play Sunday as teams who have Friday, or even Thursday Night games, will complain and rightly so. Just wouldn't happen

Better still separate the stand alone ex vfa clubs from the mega resourced afl reserves / aligned clubs to provide a fairer outcome and preserve the long term future of the important stand alone ex VFA clubs?
