WARNING: should only be read after slamming back a few shots.
Here are the VFL participation rules pertaining to Geelong. (Missing sections relate to clubs with a VFL Reserve side, and Reserve grade qualifications.)
21.1 Players who have not played at least one (AFL or VFL) Senior or Reserve match in the relevant season shall be ineligible to play in the Senior Grade Finals.
21.2 Players who have played with the AFL Senior team of any AFL Club after the 1st day of July in the relevant season shall be ineligible to play in the VFL Senior or VFL Reserve Grade Finals unless they have played a total of at least seven (7) Senior or Reserve VFL matches in the same season
21.6 Notwithstanding the provisions of Rule 21 when an AFL Club is still qualified to participate in the AFL Finals Series, all such AFL Club listed players shall be eligible to be selected for a team participating in either the VFL Senior or VFL Reserve grade Finals Series game provided that such player has played at least 1 game in the VFL Senior Grade or missed through injury at least 8 consecutive Home and Away matches of either the AFL or VFL Season.
21.10 Not withstanding the provisions of Rule 21, for a VFL Club(s) who do not field a VFL Reserve Grade team in the competition, AFL listed players must qualify players under Regulation 21.2 and must have played not more than 12 AFL games to be eligible to play in VFL finals matches.
21.11 Not withstanding the provisions of Rule 21, for a VFL Club(s) who do not field a VFL Reserve Grade team in the competition, when an AFL Club has completed the AFL Home and Away season or is eliminated from the AFL Final Series, a minimum of 10 VFL listed players must be selected in the VFL Senior finals team for all VFL Finals matches. The balance of the 10 VFL listed players can comprise of AFL veterans listed and AFL rookie listed have qualified under Rule 21.10 and VFL listed players who have qualified under Rule 21.1
For those wondering whether the 10-12 (vfl/afl players) and 7-12 (min vfl/max afl games) rules apply to the VFL preliminary should our firsts beat the Kangas this week and earn the break, 21.6 ("when an AFL Club is still qualified to participate in the AFL Finals Series") and 21.11 ("or is eliminated from the AFL finals series") would suggest not.
If they are applied, against my interpretation of the regulations (or in the unlikely scenario that the firsts are bundled out in straight sets), our AFL listed players that qualify are West, King, Playfair, Gardiner, Spencer, Callan, Hogan, Gamble, Byrnes, Prismall, Hawkins and Rooke (who qualifies due to missing at least 8 consecutive weeks to injury). Possible returns, depending on recovery: Sam Hunt, Djerrkura and Tenace. Not eligible: DJ (only 6 VFL matches) and Joshy (13 AFL matches). Rookies Grima, Lonergan, Davenport and Bedford can be included in the VFL quota.
So we'd be allowed 12 AFL players plus our 4 rookies, leaving us with 6 VFL back-ups to play.
I believe we have the cattle. My Top 6:
1. Capt'n Byrne; even though down on his usually high standards, is still the best we have.
2. Scotty Thompson, sensational last week. Aggressive and quick, can play tall or small. Makes up for losing S. Hunt and Owen.
3. Jay Cheep; like Thompson, he's played very well the past few weeks.
4. Matt Firman, played some good games earlier in the season.
5. Chris Urie, but he missed last week. Injured or just dropped? Can tag or kick goals.
6. Simon Clarke, a taller utility to add balance.
Phil Read's another option, assuming he's recovered from his cut foot. He's a big game player, but has missed a lot of footy. If Urie's not fit, then select Jack Hollmer or Drew Barnes -both have been handy.
