Don't give a toss who won afl flags before Port entered the comp. Same as Crows, Freo, Bris Lions, WC etc don't care who won before they were in the comp. As for the vfl expanding, my understanding was the initial dream from directors of all leagues was to have a national comp with the best clubs from all leagues. Realising that all mediocre under performing clubs from all states would kick up (mediocre clubs being in the majority) AND to get a lot of your vfl clubs out of the financial shite they were left with the "smoother" transition of expanding the VFL by adding clubs willing to pay a fat entry "license". That's why we don't really care about "pre our club entering" premierships. But if you feel better about it........

lucky port have so many flags they can brag about, same with essendon, although port do have more flags than essendon

they are both goin pretty bad

Actually the Bombers also have 35 if you want to include flags from other leagues:

16 senior flags, 8 reserves, 5 under 19, 6 night, total = 35.

Essendon win on a count back though as they never lost a GF by 119.

Like it or hate it...Officially in 1990 it' became a different comp..as the then administration finacially supported the change of it's business name from being The Victorian Football League (VFL) and with majority club approval it was re-named and re-badged (with a new logo) to become the Australian Football League.... The 1990 fixture was also listed as being the National Competion..not the Victorian Football League Competion as it was known up to 1990

Correct. Just like Bombay became a different city and Cassius Clay became a different person.
