VFL flags don't count.

Thats where you dont get it, its not a debate. its fact.

There was no breakaway competition that began around the late 1980s, it was simply a rebranding, when expansion goes to New Zealand and its rebranded the IFL, will that mean this years flag "doesnt count"

Make up your minds fellas. Either the VFL is the same as the AFL or its not, you can't swing both ways, although its quite possible that you do.

That's what we've been saying all along. So they can't possibly count in the AFL or they'd be counted twice.

I havent seen Sandringhams premierships counted in the AFL, the pre 1990 AFL is a different story completely.

Fremantle may not have been involved in starting the AFL, but plenty of other clubs were. That's why the AFL is a new comp.

Yes those clubs were Melbourne, Geelong, Collingwood, Carlton, Essendon among others, they did this 1897 i dont think we can call that new.

Is there some sort of cultural divide here or are you just thick?

No theres idiots trying to say the rebranding of an organisation to maximise profits takes away all the previous history of that organisation.

I suppose you think if you change your name your next birthday will turn you 1 year old as well. You could even claim immaculate conception as your previous history of having parents "doesnt count"

exactly the response i would expect from a supporter who has nothing else to hang his hat on than a premiership won in a time where milkman was still a legitimate profession.

He apparently also believes that AFL could be played underwater, and that posts in big font earn more points toward validating a debate.

Harsh bringing up the milkman though Clive, you know he's sensitive about that.

I dont think even the pop out picture book would do it for you

1986- No salary cap
1987- Salary Cap

1986- Not a national comp
1987- National comp

1986- No draft before the season
1987- Draft before the season

Equalisation policies plus the expansion into a true national competition. VFL suburban flags are nice to look at, but compared to AFL flags they are worth very, very little.

The sooner clubs stop bragging about flags won when the game was an amatuer, all Melbourne league, and even trying to compare them to the multi-billion dollar professional, equalised, national competition that we have now, the better.

Quit living in the past. What your club has achieved post 1987 is all that really matters.

Yeah quit having the Hall of fame and inducting Legends each year. Your living in the past AFL. Dont promote your 100 yr birthday. meaningless.

Brownlow and Coleman were handy VFL players on muddy suburban grounds but would struggle getting a game in the AFL.

Too bloody right!

Although to be fair, skill levels and athleticism tend to decline pretty quickly once you're dead.

150 year birthday. Don't cut short the history of the game.

With the national competition, salary cap and draft all beginning at the same point, I think it's fair to say flags won before this point hold very little weight compared to modern flags.

No the 150 yr thing was history of Aussie Rules, which was when Melbourne Football Club was formed. 1858.

In 1996 the AFL celebrated the 100 history of the league that was formed in 1897.

Alright thats sorted finally. So who hasn't won an AFL Premiership flag, lets see...

Melbourne, St Kilda, Western Bulldogs, Fremantle, Richmond. Did I get them all?

i agree with the op. Freo aren't the only ones who haven't one an AFL flag.

but of couse no one in VIC will count it as that.

Of they count you idiot

The AFL is an expanded VFL, not really hard to understand

Its like saying the celtics championships shouldnt count from early on because the NBA expanded and took in teams from the ABA, etc....

This argument will never have an answer. VFL flags do count, but they just aren't the same.

To me, a flag is only special if you were alive to see and appreciate it.

Completely irrelevant that suburban grounds were used in that time period, as the comp was national ever since West Coast and Brisbane joined. Surely it isn't that hard to understand?

Simpleton.

Oh and you were going so well up until this point.

West Coast and Brisbane joined in 1987 - 3 years BEFORE the 'AFL' started.

So, which is it, '87 or 1990?

So you're saying Hawthorn is the most successful team then?

After all, we've won 4 flags in that time.

Maybe your POV has some merit after all..... ;)
