VFL flags don't count.

*sigh*

So we had a national competition back in 1897, did we?

*facepalm*

Who f*cking cares whether it's now a national comp or not, you're arguing that the records pre-87 or pre-82 are irrelevant which is completely wrong as the AFL who were formerly known as the VFL acknowledge those records!

If 10 new expansion teams enter the competition, the records dating back to 1897 will remain.

Where did I say that the records pre-87 are irrelevant? Where in the world, did I say that? If I said that, the Swans would have only won 1 premiership, instead of the 4 we currently own.

I'm saying, our competition the AFL started as the VFL back in 1897 and changed it's name in 1990. Of course the records pre-1990 remain intact. I did not say otherwise. Please read carefully, with what I am saying. :) :thumbsu:

Why would even accuse a bloods supporter of thinking that, only the Eagles are arrogant enough to think premierships before they were in the competition are worth less.

I think the OP and supporters are right.

And with that precedent established we can quite rightly see that Etihad Stadium didn't exist before 2009, and AAMI Stadium didn't exist before 2002.

Damn games were tough at those grounds (and others) before they existed.

This brings into question the 740,000 Premierships won by Port Adelaide at a non-existent venue.

We can probably also rule out the Brisbane Lions premierships as they were all won wearing a different jumper to the current one. By association, we can safely assume they were a different team.

AND I just worked out why the Bulldogs sucked so much until 2007. Seeing as how Brian Lake didn't exist before then, they obviously played the better part of 5 years a man short.

It's amazing how much a name change can affect history. Someone remind me if I ever get in too much debt that I can always change my name and erase my past.

There is no difference between the comp in 1987 compared to 1990, the name change should have happened in 87 and for all intents and purposes that's when the AFL really started.

My argument is valid either way.

As far as I am concerned the VFL became a National Competition the moment South Melbourne were referred to as the Sydney Swans in 1982. ;)

Nah they do count because the VFL became the AFL. The WAFL and SANFL did not become the AFL.

Only f@gs see it any other way :thumbsu:

I tend to agree with the OP.

BUT, who really cares. I dont care about flags won before my team was formed, because my team wasnt around to compete... I dont care about Ports 75,000 SANFL flags, or how ever many flags the VIC teams won before the team I support was formed. The eddieWOOD macguirePIES like to brag about their flags from 50+ years ago, but whats the point bragging about them to an Adelaide, Port, Freo, Brisbane, WC fan? We dont care, if the VIC teams had actually beat my team to get to those flags then fair enough. But they didnt. So VIC teams can have their little bragging circle where they brag about things that didnt happen in their own life times, I would rather take part in debates about flags from 1991, the year my team was formed and has been beaten each year it hasnt won a flag.

Never said flags pre-1987 were irrelevant.

The relevance of premierships won in the 80's was far higher than premirship's won around the time period of the Wright Brothers first flight.

AFL flags just have more significance that's all.

So in 100 years, your flag in 2006 will be irrelevent because it is old?

Nice logic.

double standards by victorians,

First off you count your state flags, and yet AS A CLUB we cant count ours. Now Im not saying we count them in terms of AFL flags, we count them as the PAFC premiership tally.

It's not double standards at all. Port Adelaide joined OUR competition. The VFL and the SANFL are two totally different competitions. It would be wrong to include the Port Adelaide premierships won in the SANFL and have them counted in VFL/AFL history. If a Victorian team, joined the SANFL League, then their history would have started again, because they've joined a different competition. See the difference?

^ read my post and come back to me. I didnt say we should add it to the AFL tally

Fair call. As far as I'm concerned, the Port Adelaide Magpies can claim as many SANFL premierships as they think they deserve. I'm good with it.

I think most people would agree that VFL flags were a significant achievement but, even the most biased of Victorians would have to admit that they don't mean as much as an AFL flag.

The AFL premier is the indisputable champion of Australia, the VFL premier wasn't. It's that simple. Who's to say that the best Victorian team in any given year was better than the best WAFL or SANFL team?

AFL flag > VFL flag.

So you'll be fine wiping your own slate back to zero when Gold Coast come in next year?

This is silly. They count because they do. A name change doesnt mean f*** all. Like Jimmyeow said its like everyone gets a clean slate when GC join.. doesnt make sense does it.

And what about all the greats who played VFL not AFL. So do we just forget the all time great players???

To bad if your a new team. If anything if your an eagle or a lion supporter, you should be saying how much the dogs and saints suck! plus on tht, No vfl means no saints, richmond, doggie flags... to bad? I dont think soo.

People on bigfooty have no life, get one and look at the bigger picture, and stop being bias.

Agree.

The modern competition started in 1990 and it is inevitable that VFL flags will be dropped from the list one day.

The interstate clubs will eventually hold the balance of power, and that will be it.

Yeah they never existed. It's the new order.

Brownlow, Coleman and Smith are just words. They were never actual people.

League records should stay EVERYONE knows that it was the premier suburban league. When Victorian clubs argue superiority between themselves theyll have VFL premierships to fall back on. As for comparing West Coast and Melbourne? apples and oranges Differnet leagues Different eras
