In 100 years time the comp will continue to be the AFL, a fully professional league, not an amateur suburban comp, so the flags will have the same value.

Lions (Fitzroy) legend Kevin Murray who left the VFL & coached East Perth for two(2) years then came back & won a Brownlow

NSW boy Haydn Bunton Senior who won 3 Brownlows then went to Subi where he won 3 x Sandovers

Polly Farmer who played 400+ senior games, only 100 in the VFL.

Then there is the failure of the VFL to attract aboriginal players, but that is a sad reflection in itself.

Doesn't take a Nostradamus type to predict that it's unlikely the AFL will feature clubs outside Australia in 100 years time. Therefore the difference between the value of a premiership between now and then will be more comparable to premierships won in the years the comp has been known as the AFL to the time period when Einstein was publishing the Theory of Relativity.

You can save this post so your great grand children can laugh at it if I'm proven incorrect.

I don't particularly mind the Victorians claiming their VFL flags, after all they did expand the VFL to incorporate teams from other states. This was the biggest problem in not establishing a truly national league with petitions from the states for inclusion into the newly formed league.

For mine, most people realize and respect that the right to claim flags really matters to people with little success today. You fall back on yesteryears achievements in whatever league that was to make you feel better about today.

That's true. The Bulldogs didn't win their first flag for 29 years, The Hawks for 36 years (but you'd have to follow up your first with another 9 in pretty quick time to match Hawthorn...), and the Saints for 59 years, so I guess that means you guys are still right in the hunt for "not the shittest" honours...

Equalisation policies plus the expansion into a true national competition. VFL suburban flags are nice to look at, but compared to AFL flags they are worth very, very little.

The sooner clubs stop bragging about flags won when the game was an amatuer, all Melbourne league, and even trying to compare them to the multi-billion dollar professional, equalised, national competition that we have now, the better.

Quit living in the past. What your club has achieved post 1987 is all that really matters.

More changes to the league in the past 30 years than in the previous 84. Hawthorn is already looking at NZ and Essendon has previously invested time and money in South Africa. We already have an AFL International Cup. Are you really that sure of yourself Flogstradamus?

Kiwis couldn't give two shits about the AFL, they will always prefer bum sniffing and the Neanderthal Rapists League (NRL).

South Africa has promise, but it will take many decades until anything significant comes to fruition there.

It's absolutely nothing like that, because

1.) There were no interstate rivals to the football league
2.) England is a much smaller country than Australia
3.) There was no equivalent of the 'bush leagues'

VFL absorbed other teams and thus changed it's NAME to AFL. It's roots are still in the VFL. Deal with it.
