Playfair
Gardiner
Spencer
King (retire)
Callan
Another player traded for picks (someone like Kelly, Tenace...)

Theres six for me.

While Gardiner at 190 could be replaced by maybe Grima it would be a mistake to get rid of Playfair 198 Spencer 194 just yet. While all is wonderfull on the injury front at the moment. Harley has the body of a 60 year old and if we lost either or both Egan/Scarlett we would be in real strife and you cant fill these spots with short people. Similiarly in the forward line if Mooney had a brain explosion and Nablett was injured we could not cover these positions. So even though most people are wielding the axe for Playfair and Spencer at the moment they have to be kept for backup as there is just not that many men of this size around and even less of them make great footballers. Callan Owen not in same boat and have this year to show something

I agree but I think the assumption would be that both Grima & Lonergran will replace Playfair & Spencer on the list. Charlie may survive another year IMO depending on the key position prospects in the draft.

Grimas only 192/88kg and nowhere near ready to mix it in a key position in AFL Could maybe play Gardiners role and replace him Lonergan has had few games and didn't play like you thought he would be the next chf at afl level and there would be a lot of doubt if he can come back at all

I don't think Callan's going anywhere fast. The scuttlebut is that after what happened in 2006 (Bomber wouldn't talk to him, he was never going to play again, wanted to be traded), at the London match Bomber pulled him aside, apologised, and said the club wanted him to stay on. He's being groomed as the next Milburn IMO.

Charlie is finished now. He was on his last legs this season in terms of making an impact.

I would be quite comfortable getting rid of both Playfair and Spencer, and in fact I think if neither of them make an impact in the seniors this year we will have no real choice. Same with Gardiner and Callan. Remember that we have to have at least three draft picks, and if we promote anyone from the rookie list thats an extra player we have to delist. If they don't go, who does?

And I have grave doubts about Lonergan ever making it back to senior footy - that was a pretty serious injury and some pretty overwhelming mental roadblocks he has to overcome to make it back. I hope he does, because I think he could make it as a key defender, but I have serious doubts.

But, would getting rid of Playfair and Spencer leave us with enough coverage?

The fact is we have plenty of coverage in the forward line with Mooney, N Ablett, Hawkins, Ottens and Grima (if he gets promoted to the senior list). Remember we are talking about 2008, so I would think that if we think Grima is good enough to be promoted for his third year at age 20, we will think he is good enough to play a key forward role almost straight away if needed. Mackie is also an option as he matures further, and we have also played Milburn as a key forward in the past. They're not ideal options obviously, but we are talking about a pretty extreme case if we don't have at least two of the other five available.

In the backline we have Scarlett, Harley, Egan and S Hunt, which I think is pretty good coverage. At a pinch Milburn and Rooke are both 189cm and can play tall, Mooney can be brought back to defence (extremely unlikely that we get serious injuries to all of our tall forwards AND defenders at the same time) and again even Mackie is capable of playing as a key defender which he did on Miller last week. That said, I think a key defender should be high on the shopping list at the draft this year, especially given that both Scarlett and Harley are close to 30 and it will take a good 2-3 years before the kid is ready.

Bottom line is that we don't have enough spots to cover for every possible contingency, but all things considered I think we have very good coverage.

Of course it could all change in the next 23 weeks, but just for fun here's what I would do at the end of the season based on current form. From the rookie list I would promote Grima, dump Lonergan and Reynolds, and retain Bedford and Davenport. I would delist Spencer, Playfair, Callan, Gardiner and Owen. That would leave us with four draft picks and three rookie picks, from which we would look for probably two key defenders, a ruckman, at least one small defender (Donohue via F/S?) and a couple more quick six footers.

i like that but i would keep callan...just coz hes father son and he is just mr couragious....i like him more then DJ....and the boy hasnt done anything wrong...infact hes mr consistency in the vfl...and he does alright nothing flash in afl..
id delist byrns though to give us our 4 draft picks:) .
1st round-high profile ruckman, or best KPP that plays well as a defender
2nd round what ever we didnt take with our first pick
3rd-father son...looks like donohue atm
4th best talent available or a project player:D

I pretty much agree with you on all accounts. Tough call on Lonergan though he has been comming along nicely by all reports.

Very premature but at a guess I would:

Promote: Lonergan & Grima
Retain Bedford & Davenport
Delist:Playfair, Spencer, Owen, Gardiner & Callan.
Look to Trade: Byrnes, Kelly.
Draft: Ruckmen, Key backmen

I can't see Lonergan being kept after this year.Had he not been injured last year he probably would've been delisted.Maybe he might be offered a VFL top-up spot for 2008.

Why would he have been delisted? He was looking like a good chance to take the league B&F in the VFL and looked good in the AFL game he was injured in.

Well thought out Reg, although I really like the look of Davenport and could easily be one of those quick six footers you mentioned.
