VFL VFL Round 10 v Box Hill Hawks. Saturday May 31, 2:05pm @ Box Hill City Oval.

This is the best group of VFL players we've had in a long time, I reckon. Liked Eyre and Byrne as well. Algeri and Bennets (among others) go OK too.
Strange that we delisted Josh Eyre and then recruited his brother to the VFL squad, who does look ok. That said I thought Josh had potential but his body was an issue.

Really liking Parker at the moment. Reads the play well and uses the footy very well. His performance was probably my highlight of the win.

Titch continues his march toward senior selection. Ideally, after the bye would be my call.

Hayes was very creative, took his chances.

Selectors have an interesting task with all of them as well as HDM, Dean, and Cox showing that they're ready for a call-up if it comes.

Steele and Howes both showed a bit on debut. They'll be better for the run.

Despite the Hawks opening the second quarter with a goal in less than 30 seconds of play, it was Brownlow medallist Tom Mitchell who got it going for the Pies, kicking his first goal in competitive footy in 448 days.

That was enough to get Collingwood going, with big man Mason Cox adding two goals to the tally, his first VFL game since the Round 5 Anzac-weekend clash against Essendon.

Fresh off his AFL debut last weekend, Will Hayes added a second goal to his name after kicking his first in the first quarter, a classy goal on the run after breaking through the pack.

A six-goal second term gave Collingwood a 12-point lead at the main break, but the Pies refused to take their foots off the pedal in the second half.

Cox and Hayes both brought their goal totals to three apiece in the third term, while mid-season draftee Roan Steele gave the Magpie Army plenty to be excited about with his end-to-end running capability on the wing.

After a lengthy stop of play due to a Box Hill injury, it looked like the Hawks were able to swing the momentum following two quick goals to AFL-listed Hawk Ned Reeves was able to bring the score to less than five points.

That was until third-year tall Oscar Steene flew out of nowhere for a huge mark over three Box Hill defenders. Topping off the mark with a classy goal, Steene’s teammates coming from everywhere to get around him.

A goal out of nowhere from VFL-recruit Brady Grey sealed the victory, with Collingwood finishing 17-point winners over Box Hill.
The numbers:

Tom Mitchell
showed his calibre, playing an integral role as an on-field leader and finishing the day with 29 disposals, nine clearances and nine tackles to go with his goal.

Fresh off his AFL debut, Will Hayes (three goals) came to play, while Mason Cox (three goals, six score involvements) was integral in the win, moving across all three lines throughout the afternoon.

Charlie Dean (23 disposals, 13 marks) made an impact in the backline, while Harry DeMattia (25 disposals, nine inside-50s) continued his strong form.

Collingwood now turn their attention to their clash under lights with the Casey Demons at Whitten Oval on Saturday 7 June at 7:10pm.

I was really impressed by Eyre, gave me a young Nick Haynes type of vibe, third tall type defender who is quick and athletic, surprised he is not on an AFL list. Perhaps he just happened to play very well today and that’s the first time I’ve noticed him. Got a decent long kick on him too.

I think it was only his second game with us today.

I think defence is a great place to develop him even if it’s not his ideal position. He’s learning a lot.

Looked a bit like Worrell from Adelaide down there, needs to work on his marking obviously, but athletically he is blessed with pace and size. Was really good below his knees in the second half
A work in progress

He's good. Was in Essendon's NGA, then essendon's VFL list last year; but left for more opportunities.. I'm told the club was after Ryan 12 months ago but he was with essendon at the time. But Ryan is very happy here.

He's your running third tall defender who can play mid (does so at castlemaine) hasn't had soft issue injuries like his brother, his injuries have been more bone/contact over the last couple years.

It’s been a fantastic weekend for all our younger players either in first team or VFL.

They’ve all shown promise and growth,

We have players who are building nicely and are capable ..we probably make them earn it more than most teams but that’s the way it is here

Enjoyed all the clips. Nice to get to know players.
Think we did pretty well in the msd :)

Yeah, he can really kick a footy!

Watched the full replay carefully and there were positive signs across the board. If you told me before the game were playing the ladder leaders and all 3 of West, Howes and Ryley Mason didn't score a goal, I would of thought we got hammered. But this definitely wasn't the case.

Hayes - Class above, just does things that scream afl player. I think he will track towards being a very similar player to bobby hill, although I think he will get up and down the wing a bit more.
Dean - Great game. Great intercept marking/defending and ok on rebound. Think he is in the best form in a while.
Mitchell - Very good, did everything you would expect (although not sure he fits into the first team anymore).
Parker - Very good, clean and smart. Think we have a player here. Only concerns I have are whether his slight body/slower pace will translate ok to next level.
DeMattia - Better, although he still seems to kick without looking. Not sold, although nice that he seems to be getting the ball a lot more.
Ryan - Good game, seems to slowly be getting back to his promising 1st year form before the concussion debut. Hopefully he can keep tracking this way. Feel like he can become a solid 7/10 defender at the next level if he keeps this up.
Cox - Good game, took his opportunities.
Steele - Didn't notice him much in first half, but looked great in second half. Looks to be a very aggressive-minded player and think his skills would translate well to the next level.
Cochrane - ok without being overly noticeable.
Steene - Loved his game. I have thought for a while that his game reminds me of darcy cameron and this performance further solidified that thought. Ok ruck, but great around the ground with contested marking.
West - About as good a game as you can hope for without scoring a goal (although he missed a relatively easy shot). Took contested marks, worked up the wing, is pleasingly good below his knees and field kicking around the ground. I am very bullish on West and think he could be anything. Doesnt really have a weakness in his game. Very excited on what he could become. Been trying to find a comparison however its abit of a struggle. Kind of moves like Jerememy Cameron and jumps at the ball like Curnow. If he can become half as good as those 2 then we have a very solid prospect for the next 10 years.
Howes - Bit of an almost game. Could of easily had 2 goals and took 2 nice marks. Considering he is only 19, has had a lot of injuries and he has performed well in the SANFL I am pretty confident on what he can become. Moreso because he has such a big frame, I think he will be a handful for defenders. Gives me Mihochek/Charlie Dixon vibes. Finger's crossed.
