Look, I love Charlie as much as the next avid Collingwood VFL watcher, but these are two enormous overstatements.

Charlie absolutely does not move like Jeremy Cameron, one of the most athletic and nimble key forwards ever to play the game. Moves more like Jesse Hogan to me. Nothing wrong with that, but it's like saying someone moves like Buddy Franklin... It's just obvious that that's not true because almost no one does.

Unless "Jerememy Cameron" is a different guy who's substantially less athletically gifted than Jeremy Cameron, in which case I'll defer to your judgement.

As for not having a weakness in his game... He'd be the first player ever not to have a weakness in his game, so I'm not sure how that's true. Running capacity, field kicking, ability to use a variety of kicks of both feet, general ball winning, not an ideal height for a true key forward - These are all things he could stand to improve or will have to overcome, which is a long list for someone with no weaknesses.

I believe he is a hell of a young player and that he'll have a substantial AFL career, but we can believe in that without going ridiculously overboard with the praise for him after a "just okay" game in the VFL.

Wow, talk about taking someone literally and not showing any nuance..

Translation:
- "Kind of moves like Jeremy Cameron" = West moves well, and it apt when ball hits ground, running style reminds me of Jeremy Cameron (See preseason snap goal against Suns).
-"Doesn't really have a weakness in his game" = West seems to be good at the key metrics that are important for an afl level forward (e.g. contested marking, quickness on lead, footy smarts, ground level play, accurate kick).

And for what its worth, looking at his Combine results last year, Charlie West came in:
  • 6th fastest in the sprint
  • 9th highest in standing vertical jump

Have fun with the rest of your knit picking of peoples posts/opinons.

Marking/leading targets either come with a ground level game or don't. Really tall ones usually don't and are mark and kick types - those who do have a ground level game as well are the exceptions. Good forward lines don't have multiple guys without a ground level game. Thus they don't tend to have 2 of the really tall types. I'm trying to think of a team who runs with 2, let alone 3, of the supposedly ideal sized KPF.
On the weekend Gold Coast ran with Witts 209cm Moyle 206cm King 202cm and Walter 195cm.

I don’t watch Gold Coast enough to rate their ground level games or to see how much time the rucks spend forward but I’d hope some of them do have a ground level game as they took 6 marks between them.

It's nitpicking/nit-picking, not knit picking, BTW!!

Will it be on tv in NSW or only Victoria?
Looking at the guide for sydney, ch 7 is airing the GWS game.
Which we don't get FTA games here in vic on saturdays. So guess thats where you luck out, you get the afl game, vic gets the VFL pies game.

Bummer but I can still see it on the AFL website?
I never know what's on tv as I use Kayo.
I think NSW only getting Saturday games with swans or gws and that's only started since round9, or 10

It's an interesting one. Hardwick and his assistants, now with us, who gave us Grigg and then Bolton as second ruck seem to be the coaches most wedded to the concept of two rucks.

I'd say that Witts and Moyle aren't good at any aspect of forward. They were playing Read earlier in the year, but he wasn't doing much. They probably don't have a third forward so think it's better to play a second ruck to keep ruck strong through rotations and have a big lump up forward to bring it to ground - kind of like we hope for when we play Coxy.

Walter looks a future gun who will give them a threat in all ways. King is mainly mark and kick.

To me, the dream forward set up has only one of Thilthorpe/Darcy as your huge bloke who also rucks alongside a couple of more agile blokes like Curnow and Cameron who can do it all - in the air, on the ground and hit up and turn their man inside out on the way back.

I love the MMM set up - it's a bargain basement version of the ideal and I don't think you want the ideal as KPF influence is overrated and the ideal will **** your salary cap, weakening other parts of the ground. It tends to be the mediums and smalls who get it done in finals.

You evidently didn't watch them on the weekend at the very least, as you'd have known it was pouring rain, so marks are not an amazing measure of whether their lineup was too big.

They were also playing against Freo, who played two ruckmen in Jackson and Darcy, and then Josh Treacy, Patrick Voss and Jye Amiss up forward. Those 5 guys only took 13 marks between them themselves.

The issue with the Gold Coast wasn't that they went in too tall really, because the opposition went in just as tall.

I don't think they really WANT to be playing a 2nd ruckman, but they won't play King in the ruck because he's their #1 option, and frankly, with his injury history, he's too brittle, and Hardwick isn't willing to risk the high draft pick in Jed Walter getting hurt by having to ruck at a young age.

Sometimes these things are just circumstantial.

I never said they were too big. Just that they were ineffective in the air. Given the how well the Freo talls marked it in comparison I think that proves my point.

It's about skillset and you just don't want multiple mark and kick guys - you want a ground level game to go with an aerial game. If you look at the 198- 200+cm forwards, you don't usually get a ground level game - Buddy and Joey Daniher the freaky exceptions. I just don't think you can run with multiple guys without a ground level game. So I do think at least one bloke West, Checkers size and shape is ideal - I'd want 2 of them myself.
Agree with this. I think you want your forward/ruck to be the taller threat, then all permanent forwards to have a strong ground game.

A permanent 200vm mark/kick forward would be detrimental to our F59 pressure game unless a freak athlete IMO.

13 marks between two ruckmen and 3 key forwards is a poor return by ordinary standards. That's only 2.6 marks per player. "How well the Freo talls marked it" wasn't very well at all.

The game wasn't won and lost by the difference in marking between "poor" by Freo and "extremely poor" by Gold Coast.

So what exactly is your point?

You missed the “in comparison” part.

Quite clearly the Freo talls performed better than Gold Coasts.

Fantastic, thank you for this information. Will be great watching on tv rather than a computer screen. :)

I just checked - it's not showing anything about the Collingwood VFL game on 7+ for me either, and it has that WAFL game (along with another two WAFL games) under Upcoming Footy. It should show up at some stage!

Edit: Just checked again, and it's there now! This is a screenshot from my computer/their website, but the same thing appears on my television:

So in the last few minutes they have added the upcoming VFL and SANFL games.
