Ideally if this is Cox's last year, Next year Steene (unless he plays regularly in the afl side) will play/Mccarthy to play forward/ruck, then have West/Howes and Mason up forward. Smit in defence. Bu feels like we can't have more than 3 talls up forward at the same time. Needs to rotate from the bench.
Yeah I'm confident the coaches can see it's too tall down there. They'll work it out.

As long as our future is being developed in their proper roles, that's the main thing.

very premature dancing on Mitchell’s grave IMO
Mans missed nearly 18 months of footy

Still confident he will be there for us when it counts later in the year
Its absolutely fine to move on from players. Sometimes this happens. Long has gone ahead in the pecking order.
2010 like. Just hope he goes out with dignity.

True, but for mitchell its not helping him to earn a recall, and he will already struggle as we won't play both him and long in the same midfield
Whether he'll see the writing on the wall and retire on his own terms, remains to be seen. Would hate to see him not offered a contract, hence effectively delisted.
I think he’s effectively done, I also think like Steele Sidebottom in 2023…he’ll be able to shift gears when it matters most. If it I think come finals his experience and champions pedigree will have him selected.

Agree, I wouldn’ t be dropping Long. Lipinski is the most obvious out from that midfield unit, you need 4-6 quality on ballers to get you through a game, I think Mitchell when he gets a taste for finals fits that mix. It allows us to then also play Crisp running out of the backline, and Daicos entirely loose. Long has proven really good in the forward line as well. Not a bad rotation for him. I think they both fit.

Its a work in progress for sure. Some tinkering just needs to be made.

They're not dropping Lippa. They would rather move him back to half forward/wing where he does the most damage.
They value him more than some do here.

Best Players

Charlie Dean, Oleg Markov, Mason Cox, Harry Demattia, Brady Grey, Roan Steele

I would think if anyone in the short-term would be it would be Sullivan - similar weaknesses in being slow, and can play the same role. But Sully has been solid

The Pies came out firing in the second half, with a quick transition kickstarted from a 50-metre penalty given to Tew Jiath leading to a strong mark by exciting forward Charlie West, however the strong wind made sure to halt Collingwood’s celebrations after blowing West’s kick to the right.

Just 10 days after hearing his name called in the Mid-Season Draft, Roan Steele kicked his first goal in the black and white, aptly against the side he is a two-time Best and Fairest runner up with.
The numbers:

Mid-season draftee Roan Steele showed his promise, finishing the day with 19 disposals and six marks along with his goal.

Former Brownlow Medallist Tom Mitchell (25 disposals, five clearances) and breakout midfielder Harry DeMattia (26 disposals, six clearances) did what they could.

Defenders Charlie Dean (22 disposals, nine intercepts, seven marks) and Jakob Ryan (18 disposals, nine intercepts) were under attack all night, while Premiership Pie Oleg Markov (19 disposals, six intercepts) showed his footy IQ.

Mason Cox (22 hitouts, two goals) was the only multiple goal scorer of the night.

COLLINGWOOD 0.1 2.2 3.5 7.6 (48)
CASEY 1.3 3.6 5.11 7.15 (57)

GOALS:
COLLINGWOOD:
Mason Cox (2), Roan Steele, Iliro Smit, Riley Mason, Ned Byrne, Josh Browne
CASEY: Ricky Mentha, Bailey Laurie, Luker Kentfield, Patrick Ireland, Mitchell Hardie, Paddy Cross, Jack Billings

Sullivan for sure out, I’m more talking about our ideal best 23 come end of year…Lipinski is in that conversation, Sullivan is not.

Yeah and history is also littered with examples of players that were written off only to prove doubters wrong
And here’s one for your 2010
Leigh brown
Just hope that when he comes back in people will admit their wrong with dignity

he may come back. . But its appearing this is his final year in any case. Would be nice if he gets a farewell game.

Hes a lot better than Sullivan
I hope he dominates in the finals like he did in 23
He may have to wait for an injury to even get in the team. Jordy will replace Sullivan when he returns.
But injuries will happen so there will be an opportunty at some point, just a matter of when.

But think some are living in the past of 2 years ago, rather than how our team has changed now. Footy moves on pretty fast.
Cox is learning this too.

There were people writing Sidey and Pendles off also not that long ago
Mccrae knows the value of Mitchell’s experience hardness and smarts especially when the whips are cracking
Big footy moves pretty fast also for those that think they have all the answers

So last week Titch was looking like an inclusion and now suddenly he’s done again? Guess it’s time to write off West too, what’s that 3 bad games in a row?
There are certainly some biases in play in this thread.

It's really not that dire.

I'm sure they'll work on things during the week.

Only Howes second game with us.

How dare you make a sensible post?

Broke my rule and just read the game day thread.

🫣

Could have sworn a couple of days ago that we had good depth - but now after a VFL game played in shocking conditions, with some players who barely know each other let alone being practised at the game plan - WE HAVE NO DEPTH!!

Our VFL team was dire last season. The club has made a substantial effort to improve on that, and now there’s some growth and development. We are not a top side, but we are more competitive than we were in 2024.

West/Mason/Howes is gonna take some time to connect. Definitely some teething problems. Feels like West has been thrown off it given he has to play higher up now that Howes is playing FF.
It worked fine with West and Riley, but adding Cox as a 90% forward along with Howes, West, Mason.. it's not working. Need to work on that.
Maybe if Smit if rucking, Cox should be on the bench.

Don't even want to think how they'll play it once Ash is ready to play..
Why would we be benching a genuine 25-30 player that we might need to call on during the AFL season or finals should the need arise just to ensure a VFL lister gets to play with a marginally more ideal forward structure?

Absolutely unhinged prioritisation.

They just need to play Howes or Mason in defence.

Liked Dean and Ryan's game, Jiath ok too. Actually didn't mind Smit's game as well, given you wouldn't expect him to start matching strength with opposing rucks for another couple of years. Reminded me a little of a gangly melb vfl ruck about 10-12 years ago.
