VFL Game Day VFL Round 18: Casey Scorpions vs Essendon (86 point loss; 43-129)

Another match to determine the makeup of the top 8 will occur this week, with both Casey and Essendon well in the mix for a home final, but more importantly a top 4 chance for the Scorpions, who can all but guarantee that with a win here.

Casey are coming into this match with good form, winning 4 of their past 5 games, and their one loss by a solitary point to Footscray, most recently beating Coburg by 13 goals. Sam Weideman and Dean Terlich were excellent up forward, kicking 3 goals apiece, whilst Viv Michie and Alex Neal-Bullen got 31 disposals and 2 goals apiece in the midfield.

Essendon are coming off a bye, but the week before was one to forget for the Dons, losing to Geelong by 13 goals as well. Jonathon Simpkin was best on for the bombers, collecting 35 disposals while James Polkinghorne earned himself a senior recall with 30 disposals himself. No multiple goal scorers for Essendon that day either.

Possible Essendon side:

FB: Ashby - Ferry - Freezer
HB: Dempsey - Grima - McNeice
MF: J Merrett - Simpkin - Long
HF: Redman - Grimley - Wallis
FF: Edwards - Nyuon - Dobson
OB: McKernan - Coghlan - Crowley
IC: Heppell - Heavyside - Carboni - Kommer - Holmes*

The toughest of the last 4 home and away games.

Casey has an average score of 95 at home. Weather forecast is for a cloudy Saturday, so that may mitigate dew on the surface during the evening.
Williamstown are much better than Casey.

No Weideman will help.

Feel the Scorpions have always been understrength in the back half, especially the KPD. If A Grimley or McKernan can get off the leash and kick 5+ then we could be a real shot.

Anyone know what the status is on Kommer, Jamar & Morgan please..??
Jamar is recovering from a hamstring still, earliest he'd be back playing anywhere is next week. Morgan also pinged a string, as mentioned a couple of posts up. Kommer is unaccounted for atm. He could be sick or injured, rested, away somewhere, on another alternate training program or any manner of other things.

Never been to a game in Casey fields before. Wish I could go but it's about a 45 minute walk from the station. * that.

Normally yes, but they have Garland, Hutchins and Dunn as KPD's there. Have a feeling that we'll play Michael in defence given they still have Pederson, Keilty, Smith and Hulett down there. Unless you try to play someone like Ashby on Pederson and try to get more run off HB and stretch the Casey defence. How I think we'll line-up:

FB: Michael - Grima - Ashby
HB: Ferry - Freezer - Heppell
MF: Stokes - Holmes - Long
HF: Redman - J Langford - Crowley
FF: Eades - Grimley - Nyuon
OB: McKernan - Coghlan - Simpkin
IC: Heavyside - Wallis - Edwards - Boyse - Carboni*

Merrett in the seniors, along with one of Hams/Langford, the other carried over emergency.

Thanks.

Any idea of either of them have shown much this year?

Morgan has been injured or on alternative training programs to prevent injury a lot this year. He's been limited to 8 VFL games in sporadic bursts between injuries, byes, etc. Eades had an interrupted preseason and a quad injury early in the piece. He's played 13 VFL games but none for the last few weeks. I'm not really a VFL watcher (other than the televised ones) so others might be able to give you more insight. Overall, I suspect the answer to your question is basically 'no, but...'

There has always been a question mark on his ability but this latest absence which doesn't appear to be injury related appears to have put the full stop on his career.
Id say he is done.
