VFL Game Day VFL Round 4: Essendon vs Collingwood, Windy Hill, Saturday 27/04/19, 2 PM

Traditional AFL rivals Essendon and Collingwood come head to head on the traditional ANZAC Round clash. Essendon has had the wood over Collingwood at this level in recent times, winning 3 of the last 5 clashes, but have only lost two from the last 8 games against the Pies. Their last clash was in last year's elimination final where Essendon had a fairly comfortable 34 point win against the Pies. Essendon's form this year has been beating up on two lowly opponents in Frankston and North Melbourne, a bye in between the two whilst Collingwood have struggled to start the season, having a lucky 3 point win against Coburg in round 1, followed by a 12 goal loss to Footscray and a tight 3 point loss to Preston.

Essendon smoked North Melbourne at Chirnside Park in Werribee to the tune of 94 points, which resulted in a disappointing drop from 604.17% to 435.94%. Essendon really controlled the game from quarter time onwards, North being unable to match the Dons on the spread from the stoppage. Jayden Laverde was the man forward of centre for the Dons, kicking 6 goals in a solid return outing after a minor ankle injury, whilst Trent Mynott was again the pick of Essendon's midfielders, having 25 disposals, 8 marks and 2 goals in a very promising sign from the future, a bit like his predecessor in the 39.

Collingwood's VFL woes have continued, the Pies falling to Preston by 3 points at Victoria Park, which will be sure to annoy Collingwood fans. Tim Broomhead seemed to be the pick of Collingwood's forwards, kicking 3 goals for the Magpies whilst their big bodied midfielders did the work in close it seems, Rupert Wills collecting 32 disposals, captain Alex Woodward picking up the 31, and Adam Oxley having 27 touches and a goal.

Essendon to continue Collingwood's woes and beat them by 55 points

Possible side:

FB: Aaron Francis - Michael Hartley - Matt Dea
HB: Martin Gleeson - Brandon Zerk-Thatcher - Ben McNiece
MF: Tom Jok - Kyle Langford - Brayden Ham
HF: Jordan Houlahan - Noah Gown - Irving Mosquito
FF: Josh Begley - James Stewart - Zac Clarke
OB: Sam Draper - Trent Mynott - Dylan Clarke

IC: Mark Baguley - Jake Long - Aaron Heppell - Danny Younan
IC: Heath Hocking - Nino Lazzaro - Kurt Aylett - Jake McQueen
23P: Jacob Brown

That looks like a pretty decent side. Lots of AFL listed players.
Of course, Langford didn't play for whatever reason so he may miss again, we don't know what's up with Clarke and Stewart may be another week away. If that's the case I'd be including Edyn Sibbald.

We are having a good run with injury (fingers crossed). McKernan, Mutch and maybe Stewart look like the only injured players right now. You would think the VFL players would be playing out of their skins for a chance to get into the main side. Especially if they are going down the road of 'managing' players and having a flex spot in the side for a younger player to get some exposure. We have seen games given to Redman, Ridley, Mutch and now Hams - although it looks like Redman and Ridley will be hard to dislodge from their AFL listed duties.

The only thing I would complain about is that we seem to have all our injuries (except for Mutch currently) in the forward/ruck department haha.

Okay, with the news that Gleeson is out, Stewart and Clarke are probably another week away I've amended the squad to:

Aaron Francis - Michael Hartley - Matthew Dea
Jake Long - Brandon Zerk-Thatcher - Ben McNiece
Tom Jok - Darcy Parish - Brayden Ham
Kyle Langford - Noah Gown - Irving Mosquito
Josh Begley - Jayden Laverde - Jordan Houlahan
Sam Draper - Trent Mynott - Dylan Clarke

Nino Lazzaro - Heath Hocking - Aaron Heppell - Kurt Aylett
Edyn Sibbald - Jake McQueen - Danny Younan - Ray Connellan
23P: Jacob Brown

I wouldn't mind seeing Hanna play either as a forward/ruck, although Collingwood don't have much in terms of rucks.

B: 41. B. McNiece, 36. M. Hartley, 30. B. Zerk-Thatcher
HB: 64. R. Connellan, 10. A. Francis, 59. A. Heppell
C: 34. J. Long, 33. B. Ham, 70. L. Mckenna

Dunno who misses, but Hocking, Mozzie and Younan likely play

Teams have been named now. Anyone know why Dea and Jok are omitted? Is it a rotations thing because we have so many AFL guys available for VFL atm, so some VFL guys get a chance (or for team balance)? Gleeson fractured his cheekbone so we know why he's out.

What's the FYI for?

They've gone in very tall, especially in defence. Bringing the ball to ground is very important. That way Fridge, Houla's, Mozzie and Oh Danny Boy can feast on the scraps.
