played mainly on the wing during his junior days before being drafted
perhaps we have tried turning him into a permanent half back flanker, maybe he is just a tall winger
its an area we need addressing
Only he didn't, played his state footy and for Glenelg almost exclusively as a half back or small defender.

And his strength has always been intercept. No chance in any other role - unless it's an occasional run with wing match up on an attacking wingman like Dempsey.

SNAPSHOT: “An athletic and versatile medium-tall with clean foot skills and sound marking ability, Jakob Ryan is among the highest rated Croweaters in the draft pool.”

Jakob Ryan is one of South Australia’s most well-performed draft prospects, having played consistent football at college, club and state level for a number of years. Ryan captured the attention of onlookers as a bottom-ager in 2021 with his play for Glenelg in the SANFL Under 18 competition, where he played well in a variety of roles. With his long blonde locks, Ryan proved hard to miss in the yellow and black, as a key member of the Bays’ side which made it to the Grand Final that year.

Throughout his 2021 campaign, Ryan’s 189cm frame and adaptable skillset saw him spend time on the wing, as a leading third-tall forward, and down back as an intercept marker. He booted five goals in seven Under 18 games, and was arguably Glenelg’s best player in the Grand Final defeat to Woodville-West Torrens. On that day at Adelaide Oval, Ryan announced himself by managing 20 disposals, five contested marks and seven inside 50s to go with a classy outside 50 goal from the boundary.

lets just say he has played there and call it even

He went pick 32, we had 17 - why not? He wasn't rate that highly as a junior.

Revisiting drafts is a bit like reading the horoscopes. It’s a bit of harmless fun, you can fantasize about the possibilities, but it bares no relationship to reality.

Just because a player was picked up by another club and became a superstar, that doesn’t mean that they would have been any good with us. Different teams have different development programs, they offer different opportunities, they have different game plans that may be better or not suited to a player’s strengths, they may be a better or not cultural fit, etc, etc, etc

Yeah, of course the clubs do revisit their draft performance to take learnings from them, but they’re doing with with far far more data points than you or I have access to.

For all we know, there are players that you or I see as stars of their club - they take hangers and kick goals and we love that - but Collingwood are treating them as a bullet dodged because they know (and you don’t) that the kid is a total dropkick, their team-mates hate his guts, he’s shit for team chemistry, and the only reason he looks good is because he performs well in a rubbish team.

Maybe I have higher expectations for our highly resourced club, compared to you.

What is wrong with retrospectively judging our drafting? How else are we supposed to?

Yes, Errol Gulden was their Academy, but we had picks 17, 19, 23, 30 and 31. He was taken pick 32 - and Sydney may not have wanted to match it, had we used any of our 3 1st rounders.

Interesting how you ignore Max Holmes at pick 20. Shannon Neale, Jake Bowey, Sam Berry and Josh Teacy were all available.

What we ended up with after trading away Oliver Henry (who is an average forward at best), was Reef McInnes.

If that's good drafting from 3 - 1st rounders and 2 - 2nd rounders.... me and you judge draft success differently.

Maybe Geelong is where they are because they draft well, trade well and manage their list well. Rather than being defensive about our success compared to Geelong, how bout we pull our finger out and try to emulate.

BTW....2020 wasn't the only draft.... 2022 was a flop, granted shallow. And 2023 was another flop with bringing in Harry DeMattia and Tew Jiath with our first 2 picks as both are in their 3rd years and showing sweet FA.
Again you dont seem to understand the draft. Quoting 3 1st rounders and 2 2nd rounders is pretty meaningless. Draft picks are best assessed top5 top 10, 10-20, 20-30 and so on. If you look at success of draft picks it really flattens out after the teens. Success for picks 20-40 is pretty similar.

Gulden I dont mind the idea of a throw at the stumps but Swans were always keen and almost certainly would have matched.

I would be impressed if you came out immediately after the draft posting it was wrong to pick Finn because Holmes is going to be a gun and Finn a flop. If you said McMahon is rubbish and we should have picked the kid Treacy who was a rookie pick 40 or so picks later, because he is going to be a very good KPF then I would be impressed

If you didnt you are just cherry picking which is the easiest game in the world.

I agree 2022-23 havent been great and that will hurt us. Its about a 1:3 chance of a go9d player with the picks we had and I dont think we will.match that. Biggest problem was our hand however. It was weak.

Cats need to sack their recruiters. The morons picked Jhye Clark at 7 over Weddle and Phillopou.

Only one problem, he played the vast majority of his football as a defender. Didn't spend one second anywhere else for SA and played 90% there for Glenelg. As for these generic player profiles that get put out has Ryan's been accurate? Not great one on one, isn't a dasher, footskills aren't damaging and his intercepting/marking isn't a regular feature so no we're not calling it even, he's a bust.

He has a good relationship with Buller.

Thinking of his tackling in the team combined with Beau, Ned, Shoota & Angry !
Bruzzy is really pissed off with this post.

Personally, if I was a Pie I'd get a sudden bout of hamstring awareness and be off getting a massage during tackling drills. They're ****ing nutters.

I was predominantly thinking of our mids.

Bruz is the original beast.
