Every Willy game I have ever seen us play is always trash. No form guide at all.
When we were aligned with Williamstown we played Werribee one day and we were 11 Goals down at
three quarter time and got up and won running away it was a very windy day. That was one of the
most amazing games I have seen live, I tried to get a couple of police officers present to shoot the
Werribee full back after he flushed with of our players with a left hook, but they declined.

what horrid conditions to play in - cold and windy. Make no mistake, wouldn’t suit any big guy....my thoughts on the positives. I’ll ignore the negatives - too many dour performances unfortunately. William looks a prospect... vandermeer looks lighting quick. Young had a serviceable game. Competed well. Boyd’s tapwork not so great but very good on the 2nd efforts. Still needs another week or two. Roberts ok. Web looks a bit too classy for vfl, as does Dale, although they both didn’t have hugely productive days, but then again either did the rest of the team. West also looks a good prospect. 1-2 years away before he’s ready. Khamis looks composed but slow with his decision making. Would get caught out severely at AFL level at this stage. 2 years away at a minimum. As mentioned up front. Very hard in the conditions to perform at ones best, but on performance I’d elevate young back into the side (and drop young) and possibly dale for Gowers and Web for Wallis or Dunkley. Time to swing the axe and give these guys a go....

Watched todays game with interest as there are a number of positions in our current squad ripe for the taking. I dont think that anybody really made a forceful demand for a call up to the senior team, but a couple of players would've given Beveridge who was in attendance something to consider. As an aside, Ive played football at Point Gellibrand Oval quite a few times in my glory days and as aesthetic a ground as it is, its a godawful place to play the game. Williamstown's experience with the typically windy conditions really showed today particularly as they flooded our backline at every opportunity making it a difficult day for any forward.

Im not sure as to Rueben William's status at the dogs, but he'd certainly be worth a rookie spot at the very least as he was clearly the best player wearing our clubs colours out there today.

My thoughts FWIW.

Laitham Vandermeer- Second time Ive seen him live (inc a single training session) and I quite like what he has to offer. Kicks a very heavy ball. Didnt get a lot of it today but looks like the type that will run, carry and kick the ball long. Looks an interesting medium to long term prospect.

Ben Cavarra- First look at somebody that many here consider to be a certainty to play as the small forward role in a team crying out for one and noticed that he played predominantly through the middle of the ground with little to no effect. Will cut him some slack due to it being his first game back after a longish layoff. A few weeks away from consideration on todays performance, but after today, one has to wonder what role the club sees for him going forward.

Fletcher Roberts- Fletcher played a Fletcher like game, stayed mostly very close to goal, didnt do a lot wrong, didnt get a lot of it. You have to wonder how he has remained on the list as long as he has when its apparent that he is a fair way off getting a recall in the MC's mind

Brad Lynch- Aside from a flashy snap goal didnt really do much today and found it difficult to find space to use his best assets of speed and footskills in a forward line that Williamstown flooded with numbers all day. Unlikely to get a call up any time soon.

Lewis Young- Surprisingly started at CHF and was quite competitive and looked reasonable there. However I thought he was amongst our best when he was swung into the ruck to use his superior leap to advantage in the second half of the game as a means of relieving a clearly tiring Boyd. I like that the club is adding the dreaded 'versatility' to his game. I wouldn't expect him to ruck much against a seasoned AFL ruckman, but I did like the competitiveness he showed around the ball. Would certainly consider him for a recall this week and try him out at CHF. At this stage its gotta be better than the void we currently have there.

Callum Porter- Tries hard no doubt, but the same issues that have always presented themselves were apparent in the windy conditions today. Has a Mitch Honeychurch vibe about him and seems destined for the same fate. Unlikely to get a call up.

Patrick Lipinski- Struggled to impact the game today. Has lovely a lovely skillset by hand and foot, but one has to wonder about his mobility to play through the middle of the ground as he seems a little one paced. Having said that I'd swap Mitch Wallis with him tomorrow.

Bailey Dale- Was ok today. Got a bit of it, is one of the few players on our list willing to run and carry the ball yet made a couple of howlers that left you scratching your head and muttering to yourself that now you understand why he hasnt been able to transition to the senior side on a permanent basis. Would consider for a call up regardless. We need his type in the side desperately.

Josh Schache- I really would love to blame the conditions on the sub-par standard of his game today, but that would be a bit of a reach. He had a height mismatch on his direct opponent all afternoon and seemed intent on positioning himself behind ion the expectation that he would outreach and take a high ball that never came. When he did lead he invariably did it form behind and dropped fundamentally easy marks. Needs to understand that he has a massive size mismatch at this level and use it to his advantage. No chance for a recall on todays form, so I presume he will be.

Lukas Webb- Started off beautifully using his sublime footskills and then faded quite badly after quater time and was mostly unsighted for the remainder of the game. Clearly needs to build match fitness before he can even be considered for a recall.

Buku Khamis- A lot to like with Baku's game today. Everything that I'd heard about his game as an underager seemed apparent here. He reads the play and positions himself quite well and looks to be a safe usere of the ball by hand or foot. Looks a very good mid-term prospect and it wouldnt surprise if he was blooded before the end of this year. Currently ahead of Lachie Young in my view.

Tom Boyd- Was ok when played in the ruck and looks to have improved the competitive side of his game once the ball hit the ground. Obviously run out of puff around half time, but you have to wonder what future he has as a ruckman as he seems unable to jump at the ball. Would much prefer he spent a long spell at FF, but I guess this will have to wait until Sweet returns from his suspension in a couple of weeks time. Many weeks away from a recall.

Bailey Williams- Mostly unsighted and fumbly on the rare occassion he got his hands to it. The club really needs to settle him into a position asap and get him back to the player he was at the tail end of last season. Was completely unsighted after about half-time. At least a good game away from a recall and this wasnt it.

Rhylee West- Worked his way into the game, clearly a smart player that used it well off both feet and by hand. I suspect that he has a bit of Caleb Daniel about him, not terribly quick but makes up for it was the speed of his though processes and ability to read the game. Medium term prospect and like Baku a chance to see some time in the seniors before the year is out.

Anyone know what happened to Williams?

Leading first quarter possession winner then off the ground.

Thought it was grossly unfair to drop him after one match when he was played in the middle for one game against Carlton to a losing ruck and even Bont, McCrae, Libba got towelled up.

Seems like guys like Wallis, Dunkley, McLean Goeers etc etc get multiple chances to stuff up yet he gets dropped then put back in a new role then dropped after 1 game.

Young is the other one who is being totally mis- managed. Told to do something different every week.

To me we have the talent but it seems like a lot of players are being used as guinea pigs.

Unfortunately missed most of the game but saw most of the last quarter.

Based on that small sample I am surprised at some of the assessments regarding Roberts' game.

In that brief period of the game, he won plenty of the ball, clearly out positioning and out marking opponents on multiple occasions. He also seemed to try hard to provide drive from the back in an effort to win the match.

Whilst not all of his efforts paid off, I would suggest a few of the passes that weren't successfully completed might have been marked by team mates at the higher level, as they may have made better ground to the balls that Fletch had kicked out in from of them.

Although I know it probably won't happen, he should be a straight swap for Lachie Young.

Very much a side issue but this is something i wonder about each time i see Willi play. Meese is an undersized ruckman (who has done very well for a long period now) who looks to me need to have his opponent wrestle with him to be effective. And they all do! Why don't they just jump over him????? Is it superior positioning or what? (Or can't Boyd jump at the moment)

Brought a smile to my face seeing Moz out there on the outer with the kids. 36 years old, injured and part of a struggling club, a slightly lesser man would’ve pulled the pin or at the very least maybe watched this from the warmth and comfort of his own home. But nup shows up with no fuss and looks more interested than anyone there. What a clubman.
I'd be doing that if I was earning $600K+ a year as well…

Fair point however most under his circumstances probably just would’ve retired already and how long has he been on our list for, about 15 years or thereabouts? He wouldn’t be short of a dollar if he hung up the boots now, so there’s more to it than that.

I don’t actually think Boyd has been coached as a ruck so his ruckwork is serviceable at best. His career is being destroyed. Just stick him in the forward line. Let him get some confidence as a forward, not build his tank in the ruck and then switch to forward. Don’t recall Hawkins has been anywhere but in the forward 50 over his career, even when he was s**t and cats fans were calling for him to be dumped.

Our depth really is a worry right now. Despite what people think, we need to go harder next 2-3 years of drafts. Time to play harder around draft time and stop being passengers

Do you think a bit of payback for cavaerra
Honestly with West I don't think so, it's just the way he plays. Pure instinct.

He's clearly not ready yet but I think we've got a good one there. Probably less advanced than I thought but more potential than I suspected if that makes sense (I only saw a few games of his last year).

BOG for us - Reuben William - impressive half back intercepting and play-making. Do we need another half back?

We have quite a few specialists - Daniel for his disposal, JJ for his run and carry, Wood for his aerial ability, but if you could combine all 3 skillsets into a single player without any deficiencies, then sure!
