VFL ROUND 6: Box Hill versus Footscray

Anyone wondering why Lynch isn’t in the team replay today’s game...
His fall from last season has been dramatic. Looks bereft of confidence and has lost his attack on the ball and fast runs that we saw last season. Perhaps off-season injury has set him back and he may improve as the season progresses. Remember he didn't hit his straps until the second half of last season. On current form, however, he is fortunate to have another year on his contract.

He was poor in VFL last year, but looked good as soon as he started AFL. Seems to play better at the higher level. Problem for him is that Van der Meer is a similar player. Vandermeer must be a chance to play seniors this year. Hope so.

His name is Tutt, not Tutts. Vandermeer is nothing like him, he can win the footy, is creative and has been impressive in the games I have seen.
In defence of Libba 39, I think he was trying to create a descriptive noun from his name, indicating certain Tutt-like traits, particularly with the use of 'the'. Perfectly acceptable usage in my opinion. Oh, and I agree, Van der Meer shows much more potential than Tutt.

VFL (The wash up)

Quarter 1:
Box Hill 3-1-19
Footscray 4-3-27 (Dickson x 2, Webb x 1, Dunkley x 1)

Quarter 2:
Box Hill 5-7-37
Footscray 7-7-49 (Schache x 1, Dale x 1, Dunkley x 1)

Quarter 3:
Box Hill 10-10-70
Footscray 9-8-62 (Schache x 1, Dunkley x 1)

Quarter 4:
Box Hill 12-12-84
Footscray 12-12-84 (Dickson x 1, Kanakis x 1, Boyd x 1)

AFL Listed Bulldogs (Through the looking glass)
Bailey Dale: Classy, takes some wrong options, need to up the volumes to make it.
Bailey Williams: Classy, too good for the VFL pure and simple.
Buku Khamis: Not sold, lacks punch.
Lewis Young: Doing well in the ruck, still looks a little lost at either end.
Callum Porter: Bottom of the packs king of guy, at best.
Tory Dickson: Good volumes early faded late, plays the same no matter the level.
Roarke Smith: Good in the air solid performance, can step up.
Tom Boyd: Flails about like those air men at the car yards, not even close.
Josh Schache: Poor decision maker at times, missed some easy targets.
Patrick Lipinski: Shuffler who accumulates, has to come in as a mid now.
Laitham Vandermeer: Showing good signs at present, used his pace well at times, yes.
Brad Lynch: Being played out of position at the moment, get him involved.
Lukas Webb: Classy, the Matthew Suckling of the VFL makes things happen, yes.
Rhylee West: Injured first quarter, corked quad, removed at three quarter time.

Now this will court controversy, but the best of the VFL boys in terms of the mid-season draft
was probably Billy Kanakis and I doubt he has even nominated. Kyle Dunkley kicked three
goals, but did little off the contest. The Jarryd Roughead versus Reuben William match up was
laughable at best, lucky he only kicked five goals. The game itself Box Hill stopped our run
and handball receives in the third quarter and that period got them back into the game.
Fitting result in the end although our third quarter was putrid and played on their terms.

Was pleased with Schache’s last quarter. Came up the ground and took marks, good second effort that lead to the ball being in Lynch’s hands when he tied the scores. Having said that he was average for the first three quarters.

The perfect match up for VFL. Want to know if he can make it, play him on a high class opponent

What are your thoughts on Ryan Gardener ?

Surely we pick up William in the mid season draft? Yeah might not be what we need completely. But he’s looking a class above.

Would love to have a look at him up forward potentially in the seniors as well. Think I saw one game last year he was played as a small forward and kicked two in the VFL.

Theres no shame in it as he's not the first but William got schooled by Roughy in more ways than one out there today.

And anybody that thought it was agood idea to give Campbell Brown access to a microphone can go and get ****ed. He's a deadset clown.

Could be the club wanted to gauge Willliam's ability on a proper AFL player prior to the draft and it sounds like he was disappointing
Roughy had 20+ kgs and a truck load of experience on him. Seemed like he was on a hiding to nothing. They managed to get him some help later with others coming off their men to assist which seemed sensible. Just got isolated a couple of times early one on one which was never going to go in his favour. Was OK in the end.

Not sold on William. He was mis-matched today and found Roughead a tough opponent - who wouldn't? Not sure if he's better than a bunch of half backs we already have and he might just play out the season in the twos if drafted. I'd rather go for need, either a small-medium forward or a tall utility player. It would be a huge step up for Kanakis at AFL level and perhaps we can find other options.
It is a quandary however, Young is the obvious tall utility and perhaps Cavarra or even West is the small forward, both of whom should be given opportunities before similar draftees are considered.

We should be grabbing Roughy for our coaching ranks at the end of the year.

Ryan Gardner: A bit awkward at times and butchered the ball coming out of defence a few times,
helped out with the Roughead mismatch a lot probably helped keep him under ten goals as
William is a flanker/wingman at best. Went into the ruck late and tried hard, can't fault his
effort, but does lack a little class. We got Joel Hamling off the Cats after failing to find his
feet there so who knows. I was not taken by any of the VFL guys to be honest, hard to say
any better than Prudden.

Williams, Dale both good. Lipinski was ok, Schache played well as the game went on and Vandermeer looks ok as well.

Webb went ok but Boyd was very average

Like to see Williams and Webb back in seniors

Roughy is great. Definitely think we are a big chance to land him as an Asst. Coach for next season with Bevo's ties to him, as well as Suckling / Duryea (And to a lesser extent Jordan). Will be very sought after with all that experience, could really help Boyd / Schache / Naughton

We're getting mixed reports on this board about Kyle Dunkley's game today. Some said he was great and we should consider drafting him if we can, others said he didn't do much apart from bob up for three goals.

So which was it? Does he get a lot of the ball? Is he quick? Is he a similar build to his big brother? And does he butcher it as much?

I would have assumed we don't need him if he's like Josh but if he's as good as some suggest maybe he's in our sights?

Mid season notes:

Liked what I saw from Dunkley. Gets to the right spots and is tough. He'll be on an AFL list at the end of the midseason draft.

William is a decent player but would be behind so many on our main list right now because of his position.

I don't see it with Gardner he just seems like a solid VFL player and nothing much more than that.

Got out the back a few times, reads the play really wrll. Took some really strong marks and has 10x the composure of our VFL listed players.
