VFL Game Day VFL Round 6: Coburg vs Essendon (150-61 win)

Essendon and Coburg come head to head in an important clash for both sides, Essendon looking to even the ledger for the year whilst Coburg are still searching for that elusive first win. The Dons have won 2 of the three clashes with Coburg since both have become standalone clubs, although Coburg got the better of the Dons last season at the same venue.

Coburg had a heartbreaking loss to Sandringham by 11 points after leading most of the day until a Sandringham goal 25 minutes into the last quarter. Nick Mellington was amongst the disposals for the Lions, collecting the ball 27 times and was best afield for the Lions. Young Hisham Kerbatieh was also very good for the Lions up forward, booting 3 goals along with Hayden Blythe up forward.

Essendon were spectacular against the Cats after a slow start for the Dons in the first quarter, coming away with a 61 point victory. Essendon controlled the ball from the second quarter onwards, with Craig Bird being very prolific for the Bombers, collecting it 37 times, whilst Alex Boyse, Alex Marklew and Tom Bellchambers kicking 3 goals apiece, albeit the latters all coming in time on last quarter.

Essendon will come in favourites for this match and they should get the job done against the Lions, who really don't have the quality to bridge that final gap.

A plausible Essendon side:

Morgan - Ferry - McNiece
Hind - Francis - Hocking
Long - Bird - Mutch
Begley - Boyse - Merrett
Redman - Draper - Howlett
Bellchambers - O'Brien - Clarke
Stanton - Holmes - Luxford - Younan - Marklew*

Is there much in the way of undercover at this ground if it pours with rain? (as is forecast)?
There's a small grandstand but that's about it.

Morgan - Darby - McNiece
J Merrett - Ferry - Hocking
Gleeson - Bird - Hind
Langford - Begley - Long
Boyse - Draper - Mutch
Bellchambers - Stanton - Howlett

Luxford - Redman - Holmes
Strachan - O'Brien - Clarke
Dobson - Younan - Uysal
Peters - Madden - Cornell

23P: Marklew

For those that don't know, Darby is a 194/92 key defender. His main strength has been the ability to take intercept marks. 8 players need to be cut from this side. I'd love to see our 3 former Lions play this game in Uysal, Madden and Younan but I suspect it will be 1 at most. Personally see 3 changes from last week's victory:

OUT: Francis (???), McKernan (inj), Bellchambers/Bird/J Merrett
IN: Mutch, Darby, Strachan/Uysal/Younan

That's a like for like swap for whichever is the held over emergency.

Coburg kicking with a slight wind but dominating stoppages and cleaner use.
