Unfair to lump McCarthy with them. He needs time to physically develop and muscle to his size. He is 200cm, he will need about 2 years to add the muscle required inorder to be competitive against the power defenders.

Prindable is the bigger concern, but as few other have alluded, we have to give him time.

We seemed to have done well from last years draft. Already got one debutant. We could potentially get another 2 in swadling and saxena before the year is out.

It seems like we have seriously improved our ability to identify/draft/develop talent.

Our youth pipeline will get better in years to come.

Until then, we just have to flush out the remanents from previous drafting years.

Thats why I said not up to this level YET.

Agree its early days for McCarthy. What you seem to have missed is my comment wasnt a dig at the players but rather pointing out that having three players who really dont deserve to be out there on performance yet is a handbrake on our ability to compete.

Correct me if I am wrong, but it looks like HH and Bobby Hill are a very long way from being ready to play in the seniors again.

HH looked ok till half time, so query on conditioning yet after his return.

Bobby looked like he was playing with a virus so I kind of scratch this game from considering his readiness a bit.

Most sides will have 2-3 players who are very raw and are no where near the vfl and AFL level.

Unfortunately for us, we have additional deadwood that is putting extra pressure on these young draftees to fast track their development and be ready for the AFL.

I agree with your assessment, I was just adding some views of my own.

There are just so many things that prindable has to work on. Aside from few good kicks here or there, there is nothing about him that stands out at all.
Barley even notice Prindable

hope you got his permission to photograph him Dave I remember back in the day you were pissed off when someone took your photo at the footy
Took it down

After realising the umpires clearly had nothing on their minds other than touching us without consent, I stopped caring about the result and started focussing on our young brigade. And there was plenty to like!

Saxena - while there was nothing outstanding about his game according to the stat sheet, he showed poise, and just did a bunch of little things that you just know will translate well at senior level. Still another 12 months off pushing for a spot you’d think, but a lot to like about his game.

Howes - had a brief debate with sr36 in the preseason about who should be sent to defence of our tall forwards. I was camp Howes and sr was camp McCarthy. I am pleased to have been proven right, because jeez he’s taken to the role like a duck to water. He looks like a long term KPD prospect now when he was looking close to being a delist prospect late last year.

West - just play the kid, he’s going to be a star.

Swadling - was our best on ground imo. Unlike earlier games, he looked composed with ball in hand today and made mostly the right decisions. Disposal was great, went at 83% DE, and just knows where to be to get the ball. Not adverse to running and bouncing, looks to have pace, good size and natural footy smarts. He’s clearly adjusted to the step up in pace going from colts/wafl to VFL now, which bodes very well for him being able to adjust to the next step in AFL footy too.

Honestly it’s been a long while since I’ve had genuine excitement over more than 1-2 of our more junior players, but I’m convinced that these 4 can make the step up, they just seem to have “it”.

Not sure if this had been noted, but did anyone see Swadling deny Saxena of the free kick in the pocket sometime in the 4th? Would much rather Saxena having the shot instead of Swadling

It’s one thing I’ve noticed about Swadling over the 4-5 games, either through a desire to be involved or he’s counting his stats but he sprints over to take an out on the full or a kick in when he clearly wasn’t closest. Can call for the ball in some bad spots as well.

Do think he’ll be a serious player however

Positives:
West, saxena, Howes, swaddling
Not a good game for short term AFL team. But a good one for the future with that 4 all looking good again. I'm warming to Prindable too - he's got some class, but can't get the footy enough yet.

Nothing wrong with being hungry to have the pill in your hands. Nick Daicos is exactly the same.

Not sure what his drop off is due to this year because he looked solid last year for the lions vfl. Perhaps a role change he hasn’t adjusted to?
