VFL Game Day VFL Round 11: Essendon vs Box Hille, Windy Hill, Saturday 15/06/19, 2:10 PM

Essendon and Box Hille face off this week in a game that is vital for the latter's hopes for getting into the top 4 in their quest for back to back flags. Essendon have won 3 of their last 5 games whilst the Hawkes have won 2 and drawn another in their past 5. Essendon hold a strong head to head record against their arch rivals, winning 4 of the past 5 encounters between the sides, Box Hille's last win coming in 2015.

Essendon won their last start by 41 points against Preston in a tightly contested game up until time on in the third quarter, the Dons piling on the last 7 goals of the game. Brayden Ham was a standout for the Dons with 3 goals in some impressive finishing work, whilst Martin Gleeson put his hand up for senior selection with 23 disposals running off half back, and David Myers controlling the centre of the ground, having 31 disposals and 2 goals.

Box Hille snapped a 3 game winless run with a 6 goal to 3 second half after trailing at the main stanza against Williamstown. Teia Miles, Dylan Moore and Jackson Ross kicked 2 apiece up front for the Hawkes, whilst Luke Meadows was strong in the middle, collecting 28 disposals in what was awarded best afield for Box Hille.

I suspect either Nash or Mullenger-McHugh to play defence, perhaps both. As far as out match ups are concerned I would be giving Bezerker the job on Roughy, Hartley on Lewis, with Francis on either Nash or NMM (whichever plays forward). This week I think it's important we run Ridley and Gleeson in defence as they run a very tall forward line but a very short defence.

As I'm bored, the average height/weight for both teams:

Essendon

Height: 187.85 cm
Weight: 83.41 kg

Box Hille

Height: 187.41 cm
Weight: 82.37 kg

Very interested to hear how Gleeson, Ridley, Brown and Francis perform.

There will be a spot for the injured Stringer.

The Zaharakis move down back suggests they don’t trust him in the midfield? Coupled with the form of Parish, Clarke and even Langford. I would sure as hell prefer Gleeson or Ridley down back as opposed to Zaka.

Also Tippa spot is uncertain. Had no impact at all on the game last night. Would of got more from Bags. Love to see someone get up a score a few sneaky goals to put pressure on selection.

Tippa is miles in front of Bags. Not really sure how you could suggest otherwise.

No Francis, Baguley or Zac Clarke today here in the warmup. Short break before Thursday’s game so I guess being safe.

When Tippa is on, he is great but when he is not, it’s like playing a man short. Last night apart from 1 good mark, a missed shot on goal, I can’t remember when he impacted the game at all. At least bags give you something every game. Just need a more consistent effort from someone in that role IMO.
