VFL umpires

I don't usually single handedly pay out umpires after a game...

But was it me, or were they absolutely terrible?

I haven't seen the game yet, however watched last weeks game on ABC2 last night, (Canberra plays all these games a week later, great for us footy fans), the umpiring in that was a joke.

So many poor errors in judgement, the funny thing is that they reflect the standard of the AFL at the moment.

Anyone catch the really poor decisions in the Sydney vs Freo game??? The best I can remember was two opposing players hanging onto the ball, with another Sydney guy hanging onto the freo player. Because one guy was on his knees, and the other on his feet, it was deemed holding the ball.

Another favourite was when Amon Buchanan was tackled near the boundary line in the last quarter with no-on around, he simply handballed it straight over the boundary line, no free, throw it in. It was that obvious, yet due to the one-sided crowd who didn't cry foul, it was let go.

I can't wait to see this game next week to see what the VFL has served up in the poor umpiring awards.

Overall I thought they were ok, except that decision against playfair on the flank when we were 4 points down and on a role...I think that lost us the game.

Although on the whole they were ok. You have to remember they aren't exactly top notch qualified. I'm still annoyed at playing McCarthy instead of Cook, terrible decision.

Watch out for a Sautner joke in the third quarter after kicking a point, as well as a throw in the final minutes (we were 5 points down) when he was grabbed high.

That was a horrible decision.

I think Phil Cleary is the VFL ump's adviser:p

When we got within a goal, one of my mates said "watch them get a free in fron of goal now" and they did. Bloke muffed the shot though

Can someone please explain to me the rule on the runners at the kick-ins. How can runners get free-kicks paid against them when they're not even playing.

Worst one was very late in the game when Kent ran down some bloke who'd already run a good 10 metres with it in our forward 50. Play On! :thumbsd:

quite easily... if they're in the 50m arc whilst kicking in then its a free simple as that... this is to stop both teams filling space with runners.

What was with that free kick against Sladey! So unfair! :(

Which one? :D
But how about his mark when the game needed to be won???

The umps could've let the game flow more freely at times. At least they weren't sucked in by Sautner's first or second dives. Third time unlucky, I s'pose.

To be fair, it could easily have been paid in the back...there were some absolute shockers though, we were sitting in Bay 14 of the Legends Stand, saw Hunt literally get fingertips to his opponent who dove and was awarded in the back, a Sandy player who clearly threw it and the umpire didn't call it, etc etc etc. ****ing horrible umpiring, they clearly lie in the Phil Cleary camp.

Is that the stand thats on the right telecast side with the wooden seats? I saw something simular just wondering if it was the same thing.

I was sitting right behind the goals there and it deffinatly looked like a throw.

The free kick against the runner was annoying for people like me at the other side of the ground. Everyone was wondering wtf are they getting a free kick for. Runners should know better especially in a GF...

I couldn't believe it was play on.....it had to be either holding the ball or in the back.

Cleary had me swearing at the TV (as usual) but in his defence in the last quarter he gave the umpires a real spray over the decision when we were less than a goal down and on a roll, and the non-free paid in front of our goals with less than a minute to go.

I saw part of the re-play, and Cleary was getting very vocal!

They were OK for most of the day, but the descision on the flank in the last quarter was a schocker and probably cost as the game. When Phil Cleary describes a free kick against as as disgraceful I guess it must be pretty bad.

Was that the one with Playfair when we had the momentum going forward?

Oh yes, trust me...the expletives coming from my mouth were fast and furious! :D

I nearly threw the remote through the screen when that free kick was paid :D
