Good luck to everyone in those areas. I panic when I hear there's a bushfire in Vic, as my daughter lives in Cockatoo & her house backs onto the state forest.

REST IN PEACE HERO

UPDATE, 1.00PM: CFA is saddened to confirm the death of volunteer firefighter and Second Lieutenant Peter Harry, who was at the scene of a house fire in Gisborne early this morning.
Firefighters were called to the house fire in Brantome Street just before midnight on Saturday (29 December). It took about an hour to control the fire.
During the clean-up at the end of the job Lt Harry went to remove a portable battery powered light, a short time later he was discovered lying on the ground at the side of the house. Firefighters responded to assist using first aid and an ambulance was called.
The fire crews and ambulance personnel worked on Peter for quite some time but unfortunately this was not successful.
Peter was a member for nearly 30 years with the Gisborne Brigade and he held a number of officer positions during this time.
Mount Macedon Group Officer Ian Hay said Lt Harry was a very active member of the brigade and would be greatly missed around the station.
CFA Chief Officer Euan Ferguson said CFA was providing support to the family and the brigade.
“CFA is saddened by this loss and our deepest sympathies are with the firefighter’s family, his friends and colleagues. We also extend our deep sympathies to the members of the Gisborne fire brigade. We will be doing everything we can to support them during this difficult time. We will also support his colleagues across CFA,” he said.
Brigade members are being offered support and counselling
http://news.cfa.vic.gov.au/news-in-brief/item/391-.html

It is with a heavy heart that CEO Mick Bourke and Chief Officer Euan Ferguson confirm the “in the line of duty” death of one of our volunteer firefighters.
48 year old Second Lieutenant Peter Harry was found collapsed while attending a house fire in Gisborne early this morning. The Gisborne Brigade, supported by crews from Sunbury, Riddells Creek and Macedon were called to the house fire shortly before midnight.
Lt Harry was a sector commander and was outside the house during the operation.
During the mop up and making up after the fire, Lt Harry went to retrieve a portable battery powered light. After a short time, his absence was noticed and a fellow member found Mr Harry unconscious on the ground, outside the house. CFA members at the scene immediately rendered first aid which was continued by Ambulance Victoria crews for as significant time.
Tragically, Lt Harry was unable to be revived.
Our sincere condolences are with the Peter’s wife Leanne, and his two teenage daughters, Alyssa and Tegan and with Peter’s family, his friends and colleagues. We also extend our deep sympathies to the members of the Gisborne Fire Brigade. We will be doing everything we can to support them during this difficult time. Leanne and the girls visited the fire station this morning to be with brigade members.
Lt Peter Harry epitomised what it means to be a CFA volunteer and member. He was a vital, talented and popular member of the Gisborne Brigade. Peter had been a member for almost 30 years. He will be deeply missed by all.
This morning, along with Operations Officer Mark Gilmore and Regional Director Pat O’Brien, we visited the family, inspected the scene of the incident and have spent time with brigade members.
The cause of the fire is being investigated by CFA and Energy Safe Victoria investigators. Also, until formal advice is issued by the Coroner, the exact cause of death is not known.
A media conference was held at the Gisborne Fire Station at 1200 hours today with a representative of the family, the Mount Macedon Group Officer Ian Hay, and CEO Mick Bourke and Chief Officer Euan Ferguson.
CFA has established Operations Officer Mark Gilmore as the family liaison officer and Operations Officer Chris Eagle as the Brigade liaison officer.
We offer our sincere thanks to those who rendered first aid to Peter at the scene. This includes the crew from Ambulance Victoria who worked tirelessly with CFA at the scene.
We are also offering support to all CFA members. Peer support can be accessed through the Rostered Duty Officer, Office in Charge, Line Manager, the Peer Coordinator or via the CFA Welfare line (ph 1800 628 616). Chaplains can be contacted directly or by contacting Converge International on 1800 337 068. Psychologists/Counsellors can be contacted directly by contacting PPC Worldwide on1300 361 008.

Major Fire Updates
Deans Gap Fire (Shoalhaven) 07/01/13 21:25

Posted: 07/01/2013
A bush fire is currently burning approx. 12km to the west of Wandandian in the Deans Gap area. The fire has burnt out approximately 6 hectares of bushland this afternoon and remains active into the night.

Current Situation

More than 25 NSW RFS crews will be working throughout the night to completely black out and strengthen containment lines with the worsening conditions faced tomorrow from the Catastrophic Fire Danger Rating and the enforcement of a Total Fire Ban across the state. Whilst no roads are currently closed in the area, residents should refrain from unnecessarily driving on roads as fire crews will be working throughout Tuesday 8 January 2013 across the Shoalhaven. Weather conditions are expected to become progressively worse throughout Tuesday and as a result, should the fire escape containment lines, a rapid spread towards the east would occur. Based on a model prediction, the rate of spread may be upwards of 3 kilometres per hour.
Advice

Residents living or holidaying in the following areas should move away from bushland for the day, to a built up area such as the centre of a town like Nowra or Ulladulla:
  • Wandandian
  • Sussex Inlet Road / Sussex Inlet
  • Swanhaven
  • Cudmirrah
  • Berrara
It is strongly recommended that this occurs prior to 8:00am on Tuesday 08 January 2013.
In deciding to leave, people should remember to take medications and other important personal items with them, including a change of clothing in case you are unable to return in the afternoon or evening.
Residents and visitors in other Bush Fire Prone areas within the Shoalhaven are also strongly advised to consider their options in relation to any possible further outbreaks of fire. These can include:
  • Leaving bush fire prone areas the night before or early in the day is your safest option – do not wait to see if an outbreak occurs
  • Avoid forested areas, thick bush or dry grass
  • Know your trigger – make a decision about:
    • When will you leave?
    • Where will you go?
    • How you will get there?
    • When you will return?
    • What you will do if you cannot leave

Deans Gap Fire (Shoalhaven) 08/01/13 09:19

Posted: 08/01/2013
A bush fire is currently burning approximately 12km to the west of Wandandian in the Deans Gap area. The fire has burnt out approximately 6 hectares of bushland.

Current Situation

More than 25 NSW RFS crews worked through the night to completely black out and strengthen containment lines around the fire. The fire has now been contained.
Whilst no roads are currently closed in the area, residents should avoid roads near the fire due to a number of firefighting vehicles in the area.
Weather conditions are expected to become progressively worse throughout today and should the fire escape containment lines, the fire is likely to spread to the east.
Based on latest predictions, the fire may spread at a speed of three kilometres per hour, or faster.
Advice
Residents living or holidaying in the following areas should move away from bushland for the day, to a built up area such as the centre of a town like Nowra or Ulladulla:
  • Wandandian
  • Sussex Inlet Road / Sussex Inlet
  • Swanhaven
  • Cudmirrah
  • Berrara
It is strongly recommended that people leave these areas as soon as possible on Tuesday morning.
