UPDATE, 1.00PM: CFA is saddened to confirm the death of volunteer firefighter and Second Lieutenant Peter Harry, who was at the scene of a house fire in Gisborne early this morning.
Firefighters were called to the house fire in Brantome Street just before midnight on Saturday (29 December). It took about an hour to control the fire.
During the clean-up at the end of the job Lt Harry went to remove a portable battery powered light, a short time later he was discovered lying on the ground at the side of the house. Firefighters responded to assist using first aid and an ambulance was called.
The fire crews and ambulance personnel worked on Peter for quite some time but unfortunately this was not successful.
Peter was a member for nearly 30 years with the Gisborne Brigade and he held a number of officer positions during this time.
Mount Macedon Group Officer Ian Hay said Lt Harry was a very active member of the brigade and would be greatly missed around the station.
CFA Chief Officer Euan Ferguson said CFA was providing support to the family and the brigade.
“CFA is saddened by this loss and our deepest sympathies are with the firefighter’s family, his friends and colleagues. We also extend our deep sympathies to the members of the Gisborne fire brigade. We will be doing everything we can to support them during this difficult time. We will also support his colleagues across CFA,” he said.

It is with a heavy heart that CEO Mick Bourke and Chief Officer Euan Ferguson confirm the “in the line of duty” death of one of our volunteer firefighters.
48 year old Second Lieutenant Peter Harry was found collapsed while attending a house fire in Gisborne early this morning. The Gisborne Brigade, supported by crews from Sunbury, Riddells Creek and Macedon were called to the house fire shortly before midnight.
Lt Harry was a sector commander and was outside the house during the operation.
During the mop up and making up after the fire, Lt Harry went to retrieve a portable battery powered light. After a short time, his absence was noticed and a fellow member found Mr Harry unconscious on the ground, outside the house. CFA members at the scene immediately rendered first aid which was continued by Ambulance Victoria crews for as significant time.
Tragically, Lt Harry was unable to be revived.
Our sincere condolences are with the Peter’s wife Leanne, and his two teenage daughters, Alyssa and Tegan and with Peter’s family, his friends and colleagues. We also extend our deep sympathies to the members of the Gisborne Fire Brigade. We will be doing everything we can to support them during this difficult time. Leanne and the girls visited the fire station this morning to be with brigade members.
Lt Peter Harry epitomised what it means to be a CFA volunteer and member. He was a vital, talented and popular member of the Gisborne Brigade. Peter had been a member for almost 30 years. He will be deeply missed by all.
This morning, along with Operations Officer Mark Gilmore and Regional Director Pat O’Brien, we visited the family, inspected the scene of the incident and have spent time with brigade members.
The cause of the fire is being investigated by CFA and Energy Safe Victoria investigators. Also, until formal advice is issued by the Coroner, the exact cause of death is not known.
A media conference was held at the Gisborne Fire Station at 1200 hours today with a representative of the family, the Mount Macedon Group Officer Ian Hay, and CEO Mick Bourke and Chief Officer Euan Ferguson.
CFA has established Operations Officer Mark Gilmore as the family liaison officer and Operations Officer Chris Eagle as the Brigade liaison officer.
We offer our sincere thanks to those who rendered first aid to Peter at the scene. This includes the crew from Ambulance Victoria who worked tirelessly with CFA at the scene.
We are also offering support to all CFA members. Peer support can be accessed through the Rostered Duty Officer, Office in Charge, Line Manager, the Peer Coordinator or via the CFA Welfare line (ph 1800 628 616).
