Isn't every ticket a purchased privledge?
Yes. And when demand fair outstrips supply the allocation of that privilege is a matter of fairness. This is one of the few issues where I think Vicbias is very real. It's just unfair that the AFL have a membership system that results in Vic club fans having a heap more access to that privilege.

Jeez. You just view it entirely about you, don't you. Collingwood got knocked out in the prelim. I shouldn't have had a ticket to the GF.
I’m confused. So you have an AFL gold but you feel dirty about it? Why don’t you take the GF ticket and offer it to a Lions supporter? That might ease your conscience.

No I get it, I just don’t understand why I should be punished for choosing the right membership for my circumstances?
You still don't get it.

The AFL membership is basically useless to WC members who live in Perth, or Adel members who live in SA as it doesn't give them access to games where they live.

AFL membership evolved from VFL Park membership, which was all about the then VFL vision of moving the GF away from the MCG to Waverley, when it was just a Victorian competition.

It is now a national competition, but yet the AFL still running with a "league" membership that is basically useless to SA, QLD, WA and NSW based members.

You will only be punished in so much that your advantage will be taken away and reallocated, to an actual member of a competing team.

You choice then whether you stick with AFL membership, or just go back to an Essendon member.

The WC fan doesn't have the choice, which IS the problem.
You’re a Collingwood supporter right? You probably should have purchased an AFL membership like me?
Sure, but I get how ridiculous it is that Victorian based Essendon supporting AFL gold members, get preferential access to a Geelong v BL GF ticket over BL and Geelong actual club members.

It is a very easy fix to improve equity of GF crowds, and give more WA, SA, NSW fans a chance to see their team in a GF....ensure that for the GF that competing club support members get priority.

The only "losers" are old AFL Gold members who think they are entitled to go along even if their team ain't playing.

That’s nice. There’s also nothing stopping you purchasing it too
Probably why there are more Collingwood AFL Gold members than any other club.

But again, the fact that it is useless to WA and SA based fans during the H&A season is a big reason stopping them being an AFL member.

Using Pies v WC GF as an example

The extra 15k or so that go to "AFL members", 10k+ would get to Collingwood members and WC would be under 1k.

That is a blatant VICBias, especially when you have 30+ year Eagles members who never had the choice to drop their direct club membership and instead be WC supporting AFL club members and see all their games during the H&A.

Everyone wants more members of competing teams getting along to the G, easiest option for the AFL is to look in their own backyard and change the AFL members entitlements and put them behind club members.

I get it. I don’t live in SA or WA though?

I also said I had no problem with watering down AFL Gold to the extent that you may miss out unless you have club support to allow more competing club members to attend.

Unlike the 1960s when VFL membership was created, now more than 500k club members do live outside Victoria.

You think you are more entitled to a GF ticket just because you took up a membership that is only relevant to Victorian based fans.
I also said I had no problem with watering down AFL Gold to the extent that you may miss out unless you have club support to allow more competing club members to attend.
AFL T&Cs note that even for GOLD members * access to matches is not guaranteed.

So a very simple tweak is all that is needed, as the AFL club support members are considered "club members" that for GF allocation, Gold AFL club support members get priority and are the only members who go into the club GF ballots. As their membership doesn't provide a guaranteed seat (like some club members) they would probably slip in as a priority 2 option - leave that up to the clubs.

If club members don't exhaust their allocation, then non-competing AFL Gold members can have a chance.

So yes you still get your 40 game access and early finals access if games at the G.

However, for GF club members become king which is needed to ensure equity with the WA, NSW, QLD and SA members. All about making it fairer for the non-Vic members.

Well I’m not the one coming up with childish, on the verge of brain dead solutions to complex problems 👍
You are the one who suggested you made a smart choice, ignoring that it isn't really a choice applicable to majority of WC or Adelaide members.

The problem ain't complex either, just put AFL Gold club support members into the same ballot system that competing club members go in.

It's not even a remotely complex problem. The AFL just choose to disadvantage Non-Vic fans by sticking with reduced GF access in order to avoid whinging from entitled AFL Gold members such as yourself.

Yes and No. I mean it’s an option available, and I pay for it. What type of “entitlement” are you referring to? I’ve been on the waiting list for 15 years, so I think I’ll have earned it when I get a Gold membership in the next year or so. We can only play by the rules in front of us.

Did you read my previous post though? I understand the potential need for balance and would be ok with allowing AFL reserve access to a competing club members from interstate. I think they should pay an equitable fee though. It can’t be a St Kilda $7 3 game NAS style membership.

When it comes to something as frivolous as watching a game of football (which, in the scheme of life, it really is) then I think I’m just going to purchase the membership that suits me and my family best 👍

I could agree with your second paragraph, as long as they have the relevant legends, high mark, whatever rip off membership the clubs want to offer.

You’ve solved it. Onto the Middle East for you Kissinger

WCE fans with a membership class likely to get a GF ticket if they make it are paying a lot more than you - for 11 games a year - and like the AFL membership, it has a waitlist.

Maybe they should have purchased a basic WCE membership and gone onto the waiting list for AFL Gold? A better investment?

Or I guess we could piss and moan on a forum about it instead

As you should. This isn't a criticism of your choice. It's a criticism that the AFL continue to offer that choice when it's not equitable.

The only "losers" are old AFL Gold members who think they are entitled to go along even if their team ain't playing.

I became an AFL member back in the early 1990's so that I could go to the Grand Final every year (I am also an Essendon member). The Grand Final access was the selling point, and it's those very funds which we pay, which went towards building the Great Southern Stand. I've been to 33 Grand Finals. It's now a 20 year wait to become a Gold AFL member. If finals access (specifically Grand Final access) wasn't available, then I would have never signed up in the first place. Imagine a current AFL silver member who has been waiting for 19 years who finally, after two decades becomes a Gold member only to find out that they can't go to the Grand Final now after waiting 19 years to be able to go? That's why it will never change, nor should it. The SELLING point of Gold AFL membership is Grand Final access. We pay a lot of money and wait a lot of years to get that access.

It is currently non-transferrable. I'd like to see it transferable so that those not going to the Grand Final can give their tickets to members of competing clubs without risk of losing their membership.

Or maybe the system could be reviewed to be more equitable.

What's the benefit to the comp? Its currently just a cash cow for the AFL that redistributes some membership income from Vic clubs to the AFL and distributes more privilege to Vic fans than Non-Vic fans.

Good luck to you. You've chosen wisely. But that doesn't mean it should exist.

You phase out gold class.

Something like each year only 50% of gold departures get replaced. So there's still some movement in the queue but the numbers in gold class drop every year.

You lost a lot of prelims when the comp moved to home finals, you'll deal with it. It's fairer.
