I think everyone loves Griff's potential, and drool at the idea of him lobbing 60m bombs home for goal. But let's not get ahead of ourselves and say he's our best key forward after one good game... that's a massive overreaction, and sets him up for the hysterical backlash when he's not able to keep delivering.

So, more likely and more capable, maybe so, but already better? Nope.

Griff was subbed off because he doesn't have the tank. He is, I think, the most subbed-off guy in RFC history. That's one thing age and experience buys you: the ability to stand up late in a game. It didn't work out against GC but I understand the reasoning.

JR is still our best regular forward. Lids when he is there, Dusty great half forward, Cotch plus support.

I don't think anyone is saying Griffiths is our best forward. Griffiths for me is ahead of TV as a player which includes forward deep and up the ground, ruck and other positions. Griffiths is our best tall half forward atm IMO. Just the way I see it. I would rather A Edwards ahead of TV atm. Honestly, TV's performance on the weekend would have to have a stigma about it for the teammates. He was soul destroying at times and Dimma keeping him on didn't help!

2 very good seasons young KPF- 36 and 27 goals respectively? Not good enough, batshit obvious. How old is/was TV? Watch younger Patton and Cameron this year regarding quality!

Why stop there, lets rank him against Wayne Carey, Royce Hart etc.

Jonathon Patton went number 1 in the draft and Cameron was signed by GWS as an underage player. What is batshit obvious is that he is never going to be as good as those blokes. Not many will be in all probability!

Lets compare apples with apples and rank him against a second young tall swinging in the ruck as he has done since he came into the side.

Compare apples with apples. Not near Hale of North and Hawthorn.

Compare apples and oranges . Vickery pick 8, Griffiths pick 18. Griffiths better than TV atm!

Once Griffiths strings together five or six good games there will be no looking back. He will become a monster.

He will be most effective with the ball at half forward or just outside IMO, and lets face it, atm we have no other talls that can play effectively there!

Allows JR play deep which suits him and one of our rucks can rest in a pocket.

Plain and simple to me if Griffiths keeps it going, but, like you, hope he and the rest of our list improves!

Yep its beginning of the season so let's wait and see how it pans out but Vics has to perform this year but I can really see if given the opportunity Griffs taking over purely for his attributes flexibility but mostly his attitude. I love how Griffs jist keeps his head down and works . But the time is now for these boys to take the opportunity before Ivan gets back. Also keep jack at ff please

Do you pick the proven performer at AFL level, or the one who has had a good pre season?

A sane person (and coach) would pick the former.

Is he a proven performer or just had the luxury of playing alot of games in a struggling/rebuilding side?

I would say Vickery hasn't proven much to date...

Come on, Hale is a 29 year old who took 6 seasons before he started doing ok as a forward. Ty was just as productive in his 3rd season. He came into a premiership team where he was practically 3rd tall and the delivery was exceptional.

That's not a fact that's just an opinion which you are entitled to of course. The facts don't back it up. Griffiths is yet to do absolutely anything in a game where it matters. Can't say that about Ty.

Whilst the thread title is Vickery v Griffiths the question the OP asked is can we play Vickery,Hampson,Griffiths,Maric,Riewoldt in the same team
I would say No and there is 1 too many BUT I dont believe that we will have all 5 players fit and ready and in form to play every week probably only 10% of the time if that - So All players are required.

What is exciting is that we actually do have the depth in an area thats vital in todays game where you need BIG key fowards that can Ruck

I'm absolutely loving the meltdowns over Vickery after 1 game.

Yes, he was bad. Very bad. But it was ONE game, people. I fully expect him to kick 40-45 goals this year and be a very good player for us.

Yes he's had down games, he sure as hell has his knockers but his preseason form plus natural progression shows he is going to take the next step this year.

Hale showed a lot more as a youngster at North. Truth is North made a blue trading him. Should have traded McIntosh earlier in retrospect. But seriously with Hale/McIntosh and Petrie North should have been satisfied with their rucks and chased forwards!

Pretty sure Hale kicked 8 goals for North one day before Hawthorn exploits.

Hale of course straight out of the draft blocks showed more as a ruckman

Did anyone watch Dimma's Disection ? He said that Griff had a great game but was subbed because we needed to take off a tall for a small and Tyrone had more match winning ability

Generally looked pretty pissed off about the game I thought. Hopefully he has shared this view with the players.

I reckon if he took off Tyrone and left Griff in his place we might have won

That's disgraceful really. Vickery should of been taken off.

Preseason form counts for very little. What will it take to show you that he is not up2 it. Been on the list how long and still shows next to nothing. If he gets 2 goals a game like he did on the weekend he would get the numbers up. He will continue to play poorly.

I think he did suggest that they made the wrong move in the dissection, but not directly.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing I think was his view. Unfortunately we'll never know if subbing Vickery instead of Griff would have cost us the game. Didn't Vickery get two marks inside 50 in the final quarter? (I can't remember for sure) One he goaled and one he passed to Deledio (why he didn't go back and take that shot I don't know) - his problem on Saturday wasn't his kicking at goal - it was getting the ball. Once he had it he should be taking the shot every time. Plus it robbed McDonough of a goal assist!

I digress. The point is we'll never know if Griffiths will have made the difference. He might have - or he may have been double teamed out of the game. Who knows. Personally (and most here agree) I would have subbed Vickery, giving Griff the chance to make a game changing statement. I certainly get the impression that Dimma wasn't impressed with Ty's performance tho and now regrets leaving him on.

Yeah said Griffiths had a "terrific" game. Wouldn't quite go that far but nothing wrong with giving him a bit of confidence. Sounds like he will keep playing him so it will be up to Griff to make the most of it.

What he actually said was TV was the more senior guy and the expectation was he would do better, but in hindsight that might not be the case. If your going to report what DH said, report it accurately and in context.
