For those interested I thought I'd bring up what's been happening at Vic Park as I live 6 mins walk from there and go for kick once a week now that day lights saving has kicked in and the umpires training sessions have stopped for the year.
At the moment about half the ground is in repair and roped off from the goal line at the ground stand end to about the 50 metre arc at the other end. Both wings are still open though and the goal nets are back up after being taken down for a couple of weeks. The top soil was lifted off in the repair area and new turf put in place which seems to be sowing nicely.
It's such a wonderful ground and still very much being used by the community. As with all open park areas though, there are some dog owners that don't take their pet's droppings with them. I can only assume that are Carlton supporters ;-)
I also found this from the Collingwood FC website which tells of the history.... http://forever.collingwoodfc.com.au/vic-park-the-timeline/
Here are some classics .....
1903 Council bans alcohol at Victoria Park, leading to a half-time passout frenzy as fans ran to local hotels to grab a drink.
1923 Collingwood Council ends prohibition/liquor ban and allows ‘liquor booths’ back into the ground again.
1930 Gordon Coventry kicks 17 goals against Fitzroy in Round 12, the highest individual tally ever at the ground.
1948 Victoria Park plays host to its biggest ever crowd for the Round 2 match against South Melbourne on 26 April 1948 — 47 224 fans crammed into the ground that day.
1964 Club announces plans to terrace and roof the entire outer at Victoria Park, boosting the ground’s capacity to more than 60,000. Plans soon scaled back.
