New official crime figures show Victoria is safer than it has been at any time for the past 10 years.

The Bureau of Statistics count of recorded crime across all states shows just 75,860 offenders in 2016-17, down from a high of 87,695 under the Baillieu government in 2012-13 and the fourth successive annual fall.

At 1392 offenders per 100,000 people over the age of 10, Victoria’s offence rate was Australia’s second lowest, bettered only by the Australian Capital Territory. The Northern Territory recorded Australia’s highest offender rate of 5709 per 100,000 people, followed by South Australia (3265), Tasmania (2281), Queensland (2201), NSW (1894) and Western Australia (1873).

Although Victoria reported only 117 homicide and related offenders in 2016-17, down from 169 and the lowest number since 2010-11, it reported more offenders guilty of acts intended to cause injury: 17,725, a record high.

There were fewer offenders guilty of crimes against property, including robbery, extortion, unlawful entry and theft, than at any time in the past decade; 14,700 compared to 17,143 in 2013-14 and a high of 20,556 in 2010-11.

There were also fewer public order offenders, miscellaneous offenders and offenders holding prohibited or regulated weapons. There were fewer youth offenders than at any time since the turn of the century: 8280, down from 14,757 in 2008-09.

Only 642 youth offenders were found guilty of public order offences in 2016-19, down from 2578 in 2008-09. The number of youth found guilty of acts intended to cause injury fell from 2065 to 1800, the number guilty of property damage fell from 1451 to 751. The sexual and related offender rate was up, from 28.1 to 32.6 per 100,000 people since 2012-13. Victoria recorded a record 1779 sexual and related offences, up from 1290 a decade earlier.

Around one in five offenders prosecuted by police in 2016-17 had been convicted of at least one family or domestic violence related offence.

Eighty four per cent of Victoria’s family or domestic violence related offenders were men. The typical age was 34 compared to 30 for other offenders. The 16,629 offenders with a family or domestic violence related offence in 2016–17 equated to 305 per 100,000 people, the second successive increase.

Around three in five had a principal family or domestic violence related offence of an act intended to cause injury. One in five had a principal offence of breach of violence and non-violence orders.

The Bureau of Statistics said it sourced its count from administrative records held by the state and territory police agencies. It said although there were differences between states and territories in the way they recorded offences it believed the statistics it had presented were comparable across the states and territories as well as over time.

So much for all the hoo haa.

Remember this the next time they tell you that cops needs machine guns.
Because the figures prove terrorist and terror attacks won't happen in the future, right?

Melbourne has been in a building boom compounded by more population that have arrived to do the building.

To add to that, WA had a collapse of 85000 tradie related mining jobs, many of whom were from the east that have gone back east where it is cheaper to live.

The mass exodus brought a large surplus of unemployed tradesmen who could no longer afford live there, so they left the state, many and mostly to Melbourne.

Although Perth suffered a large exit of about 250000 people in less than 12 months, government moved to fill the hole as fast they could with immigrants leaving only a population net decline of 10000 people which translates to about 5000 rentals empty.

Building fell off a cliff, builders stopped building in attempt to crush tradies contract rates, the builders saying we are just finishing off our existing houses before we start any more houses. Lots of people left including locals.

Don't worry, correction is coming to Melbourne. So will crime.
