Victorian government bans school kids from using mobile phones

Maybe it's changed – I've hoped – but 13-year olds are less tapped into things such as bullying than 30-year old office workers. One gets away with a lot more than the other.

Teachers are scum.
No, teachers are like any other profession, you have good, bad and average teachers.

I don't know how bad you copped it at school, you talk like you would have been a s**t student to deal with, but no idea what you actually copped.

I had some great teachers, I had some indifferent teachers and I had some assholes that I clashed with on a regular basis.

I think there are a lot of issues with the school system, and the way we view and pay our teachers. But to suggest that they are all scum is way off the mark

I smoked in high school too, not as relaxed as sitting on the oval, we had to hide behide the demountables. **** I used to be cool. What happened man.
It was a glorious time called the 80s when you got change $3 for 25 fags and school kids could afford to smoke.

Teenagers live and breathe their ******* phones and iPads these days. Parents let it happen too. Spineless, lazy parents like my mother in law. I had a flip phone at high school because that's what was around. Motorola's were still cool. Bluetooth was new-ish technology for phones. Sending each other music was the bomb. Smart phones just started to pop up around year 10 but only the rich (or in debt) parents gave their kids one. My favourite thing to do at lunch time was play basketball. Pretty much every lunchtime all year other than the days it pissed down.

I swear teenagers can't even sit around and chat s**t anymore without at least one member of the group loading up videos on their phone to show everyone

We used to sit on the oval and smoke.

Which was clearly just so much better according to this thread.

Yes phone addiction is an issue in teens, but if I had a teen I would rather them be preoccupied with a phone than sitting there killing their lungs like the old school cool kids did.

Teens are young and easily distracted and stupid. They are going to get preoccupied with stupid things, otherwise you might as well consider them adultS.

The attention span of the average 18yo right now is already puss. Just wait til the kids who were born post iPhone reach 'adulthood'.

This is going to be epic.
You do have to laugh at grown adults who spend their days posting on BigFooty when they're supposed to be doing work having the audacity to call the next generation of kids screwed. It's all the smartphone's fault I guess.

It's way more pathetic for a professional adult to be slacking off and posting on a football forum while getting paid to do a job than it is for some teenager with a burgeoning social life to be sending a few texts in a class they don't want to be in. Looks like people who didn't even grow up with smartphones enjoy finding ways to goof off when they're supposed to be doing work.

As a noted appetite suppressant, I see encouraging kids to smoke as a solution to the obesity crisis. We can give the real porkers meth, although that doesn't seem to have helped Bomber Thompson move those unwanted kilos.

The irony wasn't at all lost when I liked this post.

I employ a lot of 15-18 year olds and the anxiety they experience when they're told they can't have their phones on them on shift is unbelievable. They are absolutely addicted to their phones and it's only going to get worse I reckon. I asked my niece about it one day because she sleeps with her phone UNDER HER PILLOW and she said if you miss out on a snap or something it's like, omg you're the world's biggest loser.

There's no way kids should have their phones on them in class, and at lunch time maybe they'll get off their arses if they don't have access to them. If their parents need to contact them they can call the office like they always have.

The need to be included and fear of missing out on anything is pretty common among teens, social media just makes it follow them everywhere.

20 years ago the same anxiety would have been about not being able to go to that super cool party.

FOMO affects a lot more than teens and social media is a big part of it for everyone on it

I employ a few 25-30 year olds and it's the same thing. You catch them hiding behind stock checking their phone and when you do catch them it's like you've just walked in on them fiddlin' themselves. Crazy.

Difference is, 25-30 year olds can go without phones if we have to. We don’t get crippling anxiety over like some teens.

Yeah, social media has caused bad FOMO among adults as well but it’s worse in teens imo
well adults should in theory be better equipped to deal with it

I know that FOMO is nothing new but I never used to wake up at 3am to check my 'socials' in case I missed a snap. It's crazy. The problem is that this s**t is now accessible 24 hours a day, the kids can't escape or they're ostracised.

Wait

So they actually do this? Do they set an alarm or is it automatic?

Madness if they do

Have you ever heard of the 'false equivalence' fallacy?

Maybe Marvel Stadium's Behaviour Officers can police the ban :D

It's probably time for the youth of today to invest in a watch (if they use the "checking to see what the time is" excuse). I don't have a phone so I don't have the need to check it every 30 seconds!

25-30 is fringe. If you are 30 now you might have avoided smartphones in high school altogether.

30-35 year olds are the real winners. We managed life without mobile phones at all for the most part as kids let alone smartphones. It's really sad the things I can do that people 5-10 years younger than me can't. Like pick up a UBD/Melway book and find and address. Or do basic mental maths. Or eat a meal without taking a photograph of it. I can go to a train station and look at a map and a timetable and work out that it will take me 15-20 minutes to get from Pascoe Vale to Flinders St and then I'll need to get on the Epping Line and go about 10 stops if I want to get to Preston. Crazy I know, I can do that without a phone. Meanwhile my old man who is not a mechanic and probably hasn't done anything beyond an oil change for about 30 years could probably still service a car with a points ignition. My generation kinda sucks but man does the next one coming through make us look good.

The iPhone came out in 2007, so if you are 25 now you were 13 then. Mobile phones were already ubiquitous so chances are you went through most if not all of high school with a smartphone. Any younger than that and you probably had one in primary school. I've seen toddlers walk up to TV screens and start tapping them. Not just random 'don't touch that' sticky hand movements, deliberate attempts to change the channel because they already associate screens with swiping and tapping to get what you want. * knows how that generation will turn out.

Cute isn't it?

You know what else is crazy about high schools? Teachers drink. They have a whole room for staff called a staff room (key is in the name that it's not for students) and on Friday afternoons they sometimes crack a couple of tins and vent about all the little obnoxious *silly people they had to deal with that week. Outrageous that students aren't allowed to join in. Some of them are 18!

Taking that students should be able to check their phone quickly now and then (I don’t think they should be allowed them in class btw)to mean “students should be allowed to casually socialise with teachers” is a massive stretch.
