I don't have stats but I reckon the goldfield region would be one of the strongest areas for men's football in the Country, I imagine women's footy will become the same, the only question mark being the traditional ties between football and netball cubs, possibly you are robbing Peter to pay Paul in regards to club strength which has plenty of women involved in the cub anyway

Stawell, Ararat, Horsham Demons, Horsham Saints all seem to be going the way of an age-restricted comp, joining with teams from Hamilton, Portland and Warrnambool.
Teams: Ararat Storm, Stawell, Horsham Demons, Horsham Saints, Hamilton, Portland, South Warrnambool(?), maybe another team from SWD?

No mention of Stawell or Ararat in Goldfields. If they were also planning on putting teams of whatever age in there, surely there'd be a mention.

Hi Professor Mobben,
You & footypedia are going to be very busy this year!

Xavier (all boys'school) is trying to start an adult female team for the VAFAW.
It has c. 6 adult men's teams, lots of connections, sponsors etc -how big will it get in female AF in the next few years?

Also, more interest from women to play in the "social" Melb. Pub League. Are you on top of the Melb. Pub League?

The c'tee club chatter is that club female football nos. will explode again in Melb. in 2017 -probably minimum +25% increase on 2016 nos.

I'm assuming (but have no evidence) female school AF, where the really big nos. are, will probably increase more. It will be interesting to see if schools have the resources ie equipment, grounds, & qualified teachers/volunteers/paid coaches etc to meet this demand
Will we ever see AF posts go up at all-girl private schools (Soccer is massive in girls'school sport)?

There should be much bigger female nos. in Auskick - & more of the the highly successfull, all-girl groups in Auskick.

I'm expecting "çode wars"to expand in 2017 -to include female sport protagonists/ adversaries for the first time

It's a shame Coll. couldn't get Vic. Park for its last AFLW game.
It would have been packed out, c.15,000, & got HUGE media attention -another big boost, &"good vibe"for female AF. The geniuses (geneii ?) at Coll. missed a huge opportunity, thinking their O. Park dump was satisfactory for the AFLW. Interesting to see what crowd O.Park gets for the absurdly timed 11am AFLW game this Sunday -feel sorry for the players if Melb.'s heat continues.
Vic. Park will be chosen for all AFLW games next year, I assume.

2017 will be seen as a milestone year for the Australian game.

Sitting where we are now, it's ridiculous that no one made a serious effort to make Vic Park the home ground for the women.

I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that the old suburban ovals will always prove popular for the next tier of footy (as it often is for the VFL, e.g. Footscray at Whitten Oval).

Yeah BringBackTorps the growth is immense. I thought I was aware of Xavs, anyway one of the all boys schools was forming a womens team, can't remember offhand which one.

The only social league I know of in Melbourne is the VSFL (ex-Rusty & Unfit FL). Not really a pub league though so I guess I don't know the one you're referring to, and would love to learn more!

Re Vic Park, Fitzroy-ACU played a few gigs there last year. I'm sure some womens comp will snaffle it up this year, and yes AFLW will probably be keen on looking at it for their next season.

The old suburban ovals as Gigantor calls them are just crying out for domestic womens footy, if not national level!

Yeah I guess I hear passing flashes about this comp but never really learnt any more. Looks like you can't really get involved unless you drink at one of those pubs (or bring a pub to the league).

I will gouge their fb group to learn what I can and create some fp pages. Thanks! I actually don't have the reclink comp down, either. Bad me.

THE inaugural Northern Football League women’s competition will consist of 21 teams, with West Preston-Lakeside and Laurimar among the clubs who will field female sides for the first time.

The NFLW will be home to 11 former Victorian Women’s Football League clubs, 10 of which will compete in Division 1.

Diamond Creek, Darebin Falcons, Melbourne Uni, VU Western Spurs, Kew, Bendigo, Deer Park, Whitehorse, Pascoe Vale and La Trobe Uni will contest the top tier.

South Morang — which finished fifth in VWFL Division 2 last year — has been grouped in Division 2 alongside Darebin 2, Diamond Creek 2, Kew 2, La Trobe Uni 2, Laurimar, Montmorency, VU Western Spurs 2 and 3, West Preston Lakeside and Whitehorse 2.

THE Northern Knights have taken a long-term view for their girls football program, aiming to become a target destination for future young stars.

Beyond creating a squad for the inaugural TAC Cup Girls competition, with the team’s first fixture this weekend, the club wants to consolidate its position.

“We looked into it last year and had it in our minds to run a girls program across the season,” talent manager Rhy Gieschen said.

“We thought it was a good opportunity to not only have an under-18 squad, but also a development squad for girls aged 14 or 15.”

A strong link with Carlton has proved beneficial, with the first five training sessions for both squads held at Ikon Park.

“For them to use an AFL facility and train in that environment automatically gave the program a real professional feel and the girls could get excited about what was to come in the program,” Gieschen said.

Carlton AFL Women’s coach Damien Keeping attended those sessions and star Blue Rebecca Privitelli is the Knights’ head coach.
