One of the perenially underated and underappreciated facets of a video game is it's score. Whether it's the orchestral highs and lows of Killzone, the smooth and soft tones of Final Fantasy or the chiptune goodness of a Mario all bring their own type of engagement and style to the table. They can create suspense, elicit fear, draw passion or just create happiness/excitement and all this while being a non-visual media which is anathema to what video games themselves are centred on. Video games music is so much more integral than it seems, setting the mood and tone for scenes and even whole games.

So the reason for me creating this thread is to share and explore video game music. Something that I profess to only recently have become fully engaged and actively aware of. Below are some of my favourites.

Starting with perhaps one of the most recognisable musical pieces of the past decade is the menu theme of Halo. Epic would perhaps be the most apt description for this.

I found the music in ODST quite mellow and this has to be one of my favoured pieces from it. Going around Mombassa at night with lights flickering, darkness enshrouding all and this as a backdrop was pretty ace.

Another well done piece in the same orchestral theme is Killzone 2's 'Helghan Forever' which coincidentally is also the main menu music.

VVVVVV is a game that I do quite like. These two are probably the two best songs from the soundtrack. I find them to be the most ordered, structured and overall listenable.

Pokemon Stadium Theme from SSB:B. Soooo good.

These two are used during the opening and closing sequences of various Kingdom Hearts games and fit the situations brilliantly especially 'Sanctuary'.

This piece is just absolute brilliance. Played during the pre menu opening of FFX and also sampled during other parts it is quite comfortably one of my favourite pieces of video game music from my favourite video game of all time.

Music from the best mini-game to have ever and probably will ever exist.

This piece is just so soothing, another one of my all time favourites.

This particular piece is just genius. Played during the 2nd best mini-game of all time (Chocobo Hot and Cold). Really is uplifting and cheery and helps set the mood of the game at the start when it is played during Zidane's sword fight with Blank.

Great sinister, mechanical theme to a real badass character.

Licensed techno music is the entirety of WipEout's soundtrack but that doesn't make it any less good.

One again licensed stuff but this just brings back so many memories. 0:40 and onwards.

So perfect for LBP....

That's all I've got for now. Feel free to post some of your favourite tracks.

Best music on the master system. 8 bit. Get really nostalgic hearing it.

Hearing That ffx music brought back memories also. Soundtracks play a huge part in games.

One Man and His Droid from the Commodore 64:

Pretty spectacular for 1985. Well ahead of it's time.

Wow, some of these posts make me feel really young...

@Shaucob Burjan
From what you've put up Persona's soundtrack seems pretty godly. Might just have to get myself onto that.

I'm loving it how game developers are investing more time and money into game music/soundtracks. It is just wonderful when you have an epic soundtrack to an epic game. Love the orchestral arrangements and the mood that it creates.

Edit: I think they should play all the high quality orchestral scores from games on Classic Radio or something. People need to be educated that games aren't for little kids anymore but for everybody from pre-school to senior years, there is almost a Hollywood quality to some of the scores that they have been putting out eg. Assassins Creed 2, LA Noire....

Shatter

Love this soundtrack. Made the game pretty memorable.

Best track (of the 90min OST) is Neon Mines IMO, which I can't find the full track on youtube, but part of it is used for the trailer....

Kinetic Harvest

Amethyst Caverns (official music video)

Jets 'N' Guns

Great soundtrack by Machinae Supremacy. Like the Shatter soundtrack in that is has a retro game feel but with current sounds/instruments, although with a more metal style.

If anyone is unfamiliar with Machinae Supremacy, they are a progressive heavy rock/metal band heavily influenced by video game music, in particular Commodore 64 music, having done covers of C64 games (Great Giana Sisters, Last Ninja and others), and appearing on chip tune websites early on. Anyway, they went on to get picked up by a record label and have released a few studio albums now. They also did the OST for Jets N Guns (which is available to download free from their website)....

Megascorcher

the music can sometimes be the best part of a game, liked the scores from Mass Effect/ME2.

The Crusader No Remorse/No Regret series (mid 90's) had an awesome soundtrack

Crusader: No Regret

Crusader: No Remorse

Raiden Project

I like most of the music from the Zelda games. Nostalgic music is always good...

Also some from the Donkey Kong games. These ones are mainly from Donkey Kong Returns.
