Top 5 central defender in the world (with a case to argue he's possibly the best). The maximum value for a central defender is £30m. I'd say he's worth £25-£30m. If United received a £30m bid, they wouldn't accept it, but it would bring them to the table.

Contracted till 2014, so United could get maximum value out of any transfer.

TransferMarkt's valuation.

He is in the top 3 creative midfielders in the world. Your team would have him in a flash. I am still confused about how Ferguson didn't go for VDV, clearly would have improved your team.
A) IRA Bomber was joking. Of course United would take him.
B) The circumstances regarding VDV's transfer were very suspicious. His asking price literally dropped €10m overnight. Madrid wanted nearly €20m and all of sudden he was at Tottenham for like €8m or something. Very bizarre.

The man is a monster. He would start for any team in the world. He might have a weakness against the really pacy strikers but then again most CB's do.

How did this gem slip through?

Terrible comment. Surely, you of all people (A Spurs fan) would realise the importance of a top defence.
What I'm saying is that their job is to defend, not necessarily win games. Title contention teams also need to be prolific in their attacking to consistantly get 3 points, something United have struggled badly with this season already.

Scoring has not been United's problem, leaking goals has

Look at a side like the Gunners. All the attacking Arsenal* you could need, yet end the season trophy-less due deficiencies in their defence (Including keeper).

Give them Drogba and they still probably wouldn't win the title. Give them Vidic/Cassilas etc and they might.

I understand defences are vital (hence why I've been annoyed with Spurs) but their job is to ensure United don't leak goals to drop points, rather than score goals to aquire points.

But gee, Vidic is becoming one of their most dangerous goal threats. Given Hernandez is their best striker though, it's not really surprising.

What a stupid thread.

There are many better defenders around.

You're either Serbian or gay.

Scoring a goal doesn't suddenly make you worth a ridiculous sum.

I agree with Apollo.

Terry, Ivanovic and Alex are the three best CBs in the world.
Lampard is the greatest midfielder of all time
Drogba is the most honest individual
and Ancelotti's left eye brow is not the new Assistant Coach of Chelsea.

Do some research about how many gritty 1-0 results have decided titles. Titles are won by being able to snatch results when the team isn't playing well, not winning 4-1.
