Viney could be a Demon early.

We would have to trade with GWS to secure their 17 y/o pick.

I would have thought they would ask for a pretty solid player for that trade.

This in mind, I suspect we'll wait for 2013.

The difference between our second round pick this year and our first round pick next year probably won't be much, assuming we do OK this year and much better next year.

yeah but how valuable is that extra year he gets to spend at the club...
i would say that experience is priceless

i would happily trade a warnock/bate/macdonald/jetta/ any of those surplus players to try and get an extra year with viney...
not saying they would accept that offer but surely theres some value in looking

Viney is in yr 11 and has already agreed to a contract with the MFC. What more experience could he get whilst completing his final year of school? He already participates in training sessions and the like and seems to be quite friendly with his team mates. The whole thing has been very well handled by the club.

well i dont no the details like that an im not sure if theres a limit to how many training sessions or hrs he can spend at the club and whether that would change if we signed him or not...

I believe we would be better off if aiming to gain a concession pick from GWS, to pick one of the other highly rated young guns on offer who some say could be top ten picks.
We are guaranteed to receive Viney under value, so why not top up with another top line player we may not be able to reach due to us moving up the ladder?

Makes more sense, do love the nostalgic nature of getting Viney early but seems a waste to me??

This year's will be another compromised draft, with GWS taking all those high and extra picks. Next year's won't. So our picks will come higher in 2012 than this year, regardless of where we finish, and that's the logic behind trying to keep as many options open for 2012.

Well, at least that's how I understand it ...

Aren't all the GC/GWS drafts compromised by them getting the 17 year olds though? Like, Gold Coast already had a bunch of players listed that never even went into the draft last year (Josh Toy etc) but wouldve been high picks. So... a second round draft pick this year would actually be more like a 3rd+ round in a normal year, because a bunch of players are already gone?

Agreed.

If we could him as a second round selection in 2011 it will end up being a pick in the mid to late 30's. A first round selection in 2012 will be most likely a top 10 selection, top 12 at best.

I know what i'd rather...

But we would still have to trade for a u/17 pick from GWS.

I would think one of those would cost a fortune to trade for.

Its far to early to make any calls but at this stage hypothetically if we traded Nate Jones and our 2nd round pick for Jack Viney and a late 1st round selection it would be ideal.
GWS get a solid young player for basically a pick down grade. Melbourne trade Jones for a pick upgrade and bank a first round selection in the 2012 draft.

Either way its early to be talking about this.

I like this. Sheedy has lost his marbles too so he'd probably be keen on Jones.

i like to dream

Nathan Jones and a second round pick wouldnt get you anywhere near a 17y/o priority pick.

Besides - Viney already has permission to do some training with us, and he will benefit from a bit of u/18 and state footy. I cant see a huge advantage in getting him on our list 12 months earlier considering what it would cost.

No point really. Having him 'on the list' won't make a bit of difference. He already trains with us when his school schedule allows it. The only difference is that he could play senior games, but even then only just a few (and how did that work out for Jack Watts?). Might as well play for Casey.

It's not about having him on the list for experience - its about being able to take him with a shittier pick in a compromised draft, rather than taking him with a high pick in an uncompromised draft.

Right you are. Also, 2012 draft is ment to be the next "superdraft". I'd rather viney this year and another gun next year.
