VIRGIN Australia has copped unexpected heat over its decision to honour Australian war veterans on its flights.

In a move similar to what is seen in the United States, Australian military veterans on Virgin Australia flights will get priority boarding and their presence will be publicly acknowledged during in-flight announcements.

“We acknowledge the important contribution veterans have made to keeping our country safe and the role they play in our community,” Virgin Australia chief executive officer John Borghetti told Brisbane’s Sunday Mail.

“More nationalist crap” or ????

While I don’t agree with Virgin’s new policy this post is beyond pathetic.

The ones who see no problem with this are usually the ones who are more likely to be scared of foreigners.

What is the problem with this ? if they don't want to be acknowledged they don't have to.

Yes seeds I am afraid of people who put tyres around other peoples heads, pour petrol over it and set the tyre on fire. I am also scared of people who chop off and play with peoples heads. Some countries have a large number of people who do this type of stuff and much much more.

Yep. Australia is ranked number one amongst countrys for the mistreatment of the indigenous population.

Seems an odd exercise in virtue signalling that no one (Veterans included) actually wanted. We have a completely different culture to the US and it's reverence of the armed forces. I'm all for respect and recognising the service these people have given to their country - it's not their fault there's a war going on, whether we agree with it or not - but this isn't that.

As someone else said; offer a discount to Veterans if your going to do something meaningful, or take a $ or % from every fare and redirect it to a mental health service for Veterans.

Actually what you say is true of you considering this post advocates lying to the Australian public about our military personnel and actions.

A democracy is not a democracy unless the citizens are inforned.

The irony is you're advocating for oppression of your own citizens and acknowladving we don't live in a free democratic society

This is your captain speaking. Welcome to virgin airlines flight from London to Melbourne. Today on board we have Tom. Tom is 84 year old veteran of the brutal war against Kenyans. He served in 53 and 54 with the Royal Northumberland fusiliers.

During his tour he burned villages down belonging to unionists advocating for democracy in Kenya. The unionists were not present and this rendered his community homeless . He helped burn crops and steal sheep and the like to quell the democratic movement and starve the supporters of democracy. He also helped special branch screen some 5000 men where half were locked up. Screening included torture and threats to the persons family. Tom was ordered to shoot on sight in some regions. Tom also worked on trains taking women and children to concentration camps so they wouldn't support the democracy movement. Hundereds of thousands never to be seen again. Please thank tom for his service.

Hi, this is your captain ShanDog speaking,

Please enjoy this thread and the stimulating discussion it may produce. We do remind you that while the board is flown by me, that hyperbole and rhetoric are generally frowned upon, and if you keep spamming it, you will be escorted off the flight.

We thank you for choosing the SRP to vent your spleen, but advise that a different airline may be suited to your agenda in the future.

You forgot to honour our Veterans before posting.

Most of the Australian servicemen I've met, you could barely tell they are war veterans. They don't seem to flaunt the fact that they served the country like the Americans seemingly do. I'd imagine they prefer it that way.

A transparent marketing exercise that's gone down like the Hindenburg and consequently looks like being retracted: https://www.theage.com.au/business/...lutes-following-backlash-20181105-p50e5b.html

Boggles the mind a large corporation wouldn't consult with the relevant groups or the public first.

There's already ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day to acknowledge the contributions made by soldiers and in any case I don't think the US reverence for their armed forces is something Australia should emulate.

The argument offered by Virgin that veterans "keep the country safe" is total bullshit too- blindly following the US into every war they've barged into hasn't made us safer, if anything it's done the opposite.

As for "acknowledging their role in the community", what about teachers, doctors, paramedics, and all the underpaid migrants who keep the 7-11's open for that 3:30am packet of Winnie Blues?

* you Virgin.

Not enough respect for the troops in here.
Some posters are hateful pricks, but I don't think there's general disrespect for military vets. I'd say the level of respect military want from the public is about on par with what we get for the most part. Would be nice if people didn't believe everything negative they read in the media about military members, but that's an issue across every facet of society. Otherwise, ANZAC Day (done properly) and some cheap Hungry Jacks is a pretty good deal.
