News Voss contract not renewed

I remembered it as Polec and Karnezis at least, were goneski way before Voss was sacked

This is true. In Kerr's interviews around the end of the year, he listed a few guys that he'd been talking to other clubs about all year. Perhaps a consensus formed and it drew a few others in.

Great outcome though - Leppa and a king draft haul.

I hope you don't mind the intrusion but thought some of you may be interested:

Over the weekend I was talking with a recently delisted Lions player...

How is Aaron doing?

Voss on SEN around lunch time today as part of his regular gig. They used him as a filler while waiting for Damien Hardwick to be available for interview.

They quizzed him on various topics relating to his time last year. I was in and out of the car but from what I can remember points raised include:
- not having much of a relationship with Angus last year, neither good nor bad
- at the start of the year he agreed with the board about waiting to the end of the year to renew his contract, as at that stage he wasn't sure whether he was the right person to be able to get the group where it needed to be. Later in the year once they had started winning he personally thought that he was able to take the group forward, ie they were headed in the right direction. So it was a bit of a shock to be sacked.
- after being asked about a complaint of Docherty was that he never talked to Vossy, he answered that he had the conversations he had to with Docherty, and that the other coaches, particularly Murray Davis and Mark Harvey, had spent an enormous amount of time with him. He stated that if he had his time again he wouldn't of changed this as he saw it as appropriate
- his biggest regret was the way the Bradshaw trade was handled, and that he lost a mate over it.
- at this time he's not interested in coaching again, but it didn't sound like a statement that he never wanted to coach again.

There was a bunch of other stuff as well I can't remember. It's probably one of those interview that's worth listening to. It is not as yet up on the SEN website.

Edit- ah beaten by bato- my iPad showed nothing in your post. Apologies.

I was a big fan of us drafting Docherty but damn he sounds like a child. I remember towards the end of last season Voss saying some time in the ressies would be good for his resilience, and now I start to see why.

Team selection not based on form... according to the players who couldnt crack the senior team. Voss touched on that on SEN earlier, saying players were told what they needed to do and improve and those that did worked their way into the seniors. Indicated that it wasnt fair to other players to have to carry the load if the players arent doing what they need to do and improving on areas that have been identified. Read into that how u will about Polec and Karni.

End of the day if the players were leaving because of Voss, surely 1 or 2 would have stayed after Voss got the boot. I think the point about Voss maybe not talking to players is more of an indication of our under funded footy department. If they arent playing seniors they wouldnt have Voss as first point, but more likely assistant coaches (as voss indicated Doc spent a lot of time with Harvs)

Fascinating interview. I'm well and truly still not behind the belief that sacking Vossy was the right move. Not at all. Will need some convincing yet.

Heard the Vossy interview on Sen in full, its was the most airtime i have ever heard the Lions get down hear on Melbourne radio. He answered every question put to him and sounded honest and sincere. Brilliant interview. Vossy just sounds like the kind of bloke you'd love to share a beer with. Dermie ask him about the Bradshaw incident and he said it was one of the things that still stings, the fact he lost a mate over it, said his wife was good friends with Daniels wife, which made the whole thing even worse. After the interview i come away thinking that Vossy come across to the young players as too hard, seems some of these players need there hands held a fair amount of the time and from the interview it sounded like Vossy just wasn't into playing the game that way, his way or the highway. He said that not being able to finish what he started gets to him a bit. Throughout the interview he kept saying we when talking about the Lions, we still seem to run deep through his veins which come across as great to me.

You are useless Angus Johnson! We were being run by a bunch of amateurs! If your head coach tells you that you most prised assets (players) will be walking out in a short term future, you bloody well do something!

I really really really dislike how you "helped" our club Angus. Everything you touched turned to shit, even after you left.

Unfortunately we still are.

Sure one or possibly two positive steps were made with bringing Lethal on board, but for the most part we're being run by a bunch of clowns whose own interest is their own. Anyone that thinks Angus was honestly interested in bettering the Lions as an organisation is deluded.

Agree with western royboy who said years ago that we should have brought in Ken Hinkley when we had the chance.

Our problem seems to be that the previous board kept trying to hit a home run by chasing shiny things. WOW is that a slightly used Fev? OMG that's Paul Roos! I love that guy. Is that Lethal? (Yay we got one.)

The reality is hitting home runs rarely works in a sport with 50 odd players where teams rely on a core of 30 when the action heats up. Everyone is chasing one guy, and even those lucky enough to get their man often get it wrong. Look at the Hawks who've purpose traded and drafted better than everyone for years.

In looking for these big plays we took the eye off the ball. We lost young blokes, our reputation and tarnished the legacy of a club legend.

This is what children do. They have all the toys in the world but find all but the one they just saw in the latest ad 'boring'. For a long while we were ebeing run by big kids who were having fun with their new toy.

(From the Outside the Club walls perspective, it's also why I can't sign the walking papers for some of the young blokes who appear out of their depth. If we want to build a club, we're going to have to endure some pain.)

I tend to agree with the boys with toy's statement, you could argue a decent case there. I think we should give our new off-field make up some time before we judge them though, there are more football heads higher up in the club now which was a big issue during the Johnson era.
