News Voss contract not renewed

I think TomFC makes some excellent points.

My gut own feeling has always been that the Want Away 5 were on the march irrespective of the Voss situation and/or aftermath.

Before anyone decides to engage me in vigorous debate, let me just re-iterate what my opinion is based on : gut feeling.

No further correspondence will be entered into.

Thankyou.

One of the worst things about the last few years is having one of our club greats, one of our most revered figures, being run down by idiots from outside the club as he battled to do a tough job that he may not have been adequately prepared for.

If he hadn't been let go when he was then he'd have been known as the bloke who chased away the go-home five. It would have been nonsense, but so is a lot of the stuff he gets charged with. At least we were spared having to watch him take yet more flak he didn't deserve.

A couple of things are certainties in what went down with Vossy's contract not being renewed:

1. Vossy was appallingly under resourced and did remarkably well under the circumstances.
2. He didn't have the support of a Chairman who was a w***er.
3. Vossy has absolutely distinguished himself as a person through this whole sorry mess...he has grown in stature and respect and still carries himself with real class. If nothing else, Open Mike has re-affirmed his stature as a club legend.
4. Angarse fell on his sword post Vossy's sacking and good riddance to the prick. His handling of Vossy's exit media conference was about as pathetic as anything I have ever witnessed in my life. It still makes me cringe with embarrassment.
5. As a club we are now better placed in at least one regard...we have Lethal back on board.

What is done is now done but it leaves me saddened by what could have been if we had had a half decent Board.

Top post. Quoted for truth.

This has been a really good discussion guys.

Think I said after it happened it wasn't what was done it was how it was done.
Michael deserved much more respect for all he gave our club over the years.
I will always support my boys.but I will never forgive the people involved in his sacking.
Michael Voss to me. is everything good about our club.
It still hurts that he will probably never be part of it again.

He will always be a part of it - he will probably work somewhere else at some point in time but he will always be a Brisbane person.

It is unprecedented in AFL football but the Lions Chairman (nonamewhatshisname) (and his Board) need the balls to publicly apologise to Vossy for the manner in which his departure as a Club legend was handled so appallingly and put out a very public olive branch. It would no doubt do wonders for Michael and his family and those of us who have respected him for so long.

I wish Vossy was asked what he thought of how Roos handled his interest in coaching again and his dealing with the clubs during that period. IMO Roos handled it extremely poorly and his actions resulted in Voss's premature sacking. Loose lips sink ships and indecision is just as deadly. Sadly Voss learnt the lesson while the other bloke signed a multi million dollar deal. Life isn't fair is it...

Yeah, pretty obvious that Roos had no interest in Brisbane but was happy to use our interest to leverage a bigger deal from the Demons.

Roos's greed may have cost Vossy his job...

Just watched the Voss interview on Open Mike that I had recorded - gee it was fantastic and also a bit disheartening (about how far we have fallen as a Club).

Some interesting thoughts:
  • This is probably a big call given Voss was our coach until late last season and what he says about his departure, but if I was Leppa I would make our whole list watch the interview.
  • In fact, I would like every employee / person at our Club to watch it. To me it is not about going over old ground - it is the fantastic football lessons (for individuals and the Club as a whole) trom someone that clearly loves the Club that are incredibly important. E.g. the effort it takes for an individual to get to the top and the need for everyone at the Club to be pulling in the same direction.
  • He is clearly a Brisbane person - at some stage we need to get him back at our Club in some capacity, and I think that should be as a Board member. Perhaps a few years need to pass before that happens, but we would be nuts to not make the best use of someone who clearly loves the Club and has a great footy knowledge base.
On a lighter note, for anyone who saw the interview:
  • How brutal was Vossy's bump on Alan Richardson (Bears vs. Pies at the Gabba, not sure what year)? It wouldn't even be a free kick then, but it has got to be one of the biggest bumps of all time.
  • I didn't even know that footballer's used to be paid more for winning than losing. Voss said in his first year he was paid $1,500 a match for a win and $500 for a loss. Perhaps the Lions should bring that back in and we would soon be back in the black! (No way the Players Association would allow it these days).

Maybe those were the main reasons, but I hope the discussion would have been much, much more detailed than that.

You would hope that, but I think the in fighting that occured after this meeting, I think the discussion wasn't much more detailed than what I said above.

For the record, Yes 1 year wouldn't have been worth it, that's why I would have given 2 years if it was me. I said 1 because that was a more realistic result considering the board at the time.

I think people get too wrapped up in he coached for 5 years, realistically he never worked in a coaches box like this, the first 3 years were learning the job, the club from year 3 to 5 had improved, so in a simplistic view the club was going up and I think he had earned a 7 year term considering he was a virtual apprentice in the first 3 years.

What makes you say that, WR? They were all mentioned in that article after Voss' departure was announced, and obviously none of them had signed a contract extension in the previous couple of years while Voss was coach.

Polec also seems to have said that he didn't really work hard enough while Voss was coach.

No doubt there are many more factors influencing Polec's rather strange little career to this point, but whatever the critical factor has been in Polec finally playing good footy, it doesn't appear to have been having Voss around.

I just think Polec lacks committment to hard work over extended time. It would have been interesting to see how things panned out had not Port picked him early. Obviously he has worked hard enough to get a start but I recon he will be that sort of player who trains poorly once his spot is secure.

Under Voss he was very much a everyone trains hard to get games. Pretty much like how he played out his career. Polec's disinterest in the ressies after a while worked against him in the end. You would have thought of all the 5 he would have been the last to leave on good speaking terms with Voss. Strange.

I do think at some point they should have just put him in the team for a long stint over players like sheldon and hawksley

Oh well... our huge loss now it seems

Voss said in his first year he was paid $1,500 a match for a win and $500 for a loss.

Pretty much how it still works in just about every suburban league and state league competition today (e.g. WAFL / SANFL etc.).

Certainly keeps players more honest that's for sure.

And McGuire still wonders why C.O.L.A was introduced.

Pretty much guaranteed in the early nineties the Pies would throw money at any Bear or Swan half decent.

Luckily Vosseys Dad was a smart man:)

I have lost a lot of respect for Roos.

The "two years only" deal with the Dees smacks of blatant opportunism.

Ever since they announced it it has felt like the $$$ offered just kept going up until it was an offer too good to refuse. If someone offered me $2m for a couple of years work, I'd find it hard to say no.

Vossy sounded like he didn't want to coach again even though Mike said he hoped he got a job again. He spoke of wanting to be involved at club land and making decisions around what a club needed to be successful etc. Wouldn't mind putting a pretty penny on the fact that Vossy will end up on the Brisbane Lions Board at some stage in the near future.

Yep, ....The interest is how long before the crowd no longer see him as the Messiah...But a coach paid mega $'s to fix the problem?....Over at the Blue house 3 games into his second season and the jungle drums are 'Ratten-tat-tatting' comparrisons....may be the start of a sticky Malt extract....

Since Roos went to Melbourne I have been happy we didn't sign him for two reasons:

1: Doesn't want to coach for any more than 3 years.
2: His obsession with doing everything the Sydney way to the point I think the Melbourne board have to get a Swans assistant as his replacement.

This could be a good fit for Melbourne and good luck to them, but it wouldn't have sat well with me if this was the current set up at the Gabba.

If Roos is serious about the job, it has become quiet clear that he needs to start talking about being there for 5 years instead of 3, I don't think any coach could turn them around in the 3 year time frame.
