I'm calling it now, the Brissie Board have stuffed up the Voss removal.

No coach in place to replace Voss. Sullied Voss's name by saying any new coach would be an upgrade on Voss. Not a very professional comment.

Does anyone want to coach Brissie ?.

Voss to the Demons ?.
Didn't see that???

Who's the guy on the left ?.
I think that it might be Brett Stephens. not sure, however.
It is indeed Mr Brett "Mooooooooooooooose" Stephens, he of 133 games for the mighty RoyBoys.

That photo was taken in the lead up to the 1993 season as part of what was the last great hurrah of Fitzroy membership drives and corporate "sponsorship" days. The abysmal state of the ground and facilities at Brunswick was too hard to hide, even on a rainy day, so they went the Acca-Dacca route and tried to make a virtue of the working man's nature of the ground.

The talent spotters from old Fitzroy were on to something with those selections, though I'm not sure that even the most optimistic Fitzroy board member would have thought that 3 of the 4 guys they picked as marketing faces would get multiple grand finals and premierships under their belts as players and coaches.

Just not with poor old Fitzroy...

Lynch - 4 grand finals as player, 3 premierships as player
Lyon - 2 grand finals as assistant coach (Sydney), 2008 NAB Cup grand final win as senior coach, 3 grand finals as senior coach
Roos - 1 grand final as a player, 2 grand finals as a coach (for 1 premiership)

A grand total of 12 grand finals (13 if you count the NAB Cup granny that Rosscoe Pekoe went to and won) for 5 premierships amongst them as either players or coaches.

Quite a ways on from the days of collars and mullets under the creaky old wooden stairs...

And, to round out the quality of the insight that the old Fitzroy recruiters had, Moooooooose went on to be Pete Sampras' fitness coach from late 1993 - 1997 (during which time Sampras was ranked consistently as #1). Brett's departure is now seen - with hindsight - as one of the reasons why Sampras faded in longer matches from '98 and '99 onwards.

Moose married Cara Black from Zimbabwe, who has won the Grand Slam in mixed doubles, and is the sister of Byron and Wayne Black (long time #1 male doubles pair with multiple Grand Slam mens' doubles titles) - and he is the current fitness coach for Marina Erakovic of New Zealand who is widely tipped to be top 5 in the women's circuit within two years.

Not bad for the "under-achiever" of the 4...

In case anyone wonders why I spotted Moose in the photo - it was due to me seeing his role at the following game:

Fitzroy was again involved in one of the great upsets, this time against West Coast in 1991. It was the Lions' last game at Princes Park in what had been a dismal season. Fitzroy's on-field performances that year mirrored its off field woes. It languished 3/18 on the ladder with West Coast 19/2 and on its way to the grand final. The Lions kicked just one goal in the first half and everything seemed to be going according to the form book. But they chucked away the script and kicked 13 to seven in the second half to win by 10 points. Football journeyman Brett Stephens was the hero with five goals.

And on the tennis note, it appears Sampras met Roosy and came off worse for wear...

Fellow inductee Paul Roos was also in fine form, recalling an incident many years ago when he spent time in the US with another ex-Fitzroy player Brett Stephens when he was tennis great Pete Sampras' fitness coach.

Roos said that one day he found himself on the court with Sampras after the winner of 14 grand slam championships got fed up watching Stephens' awful strokeplay and decided to take over as Roos' opponent.

To Roos' delight, Sampras' first serve was a fault and the next one, which was in, was returned by Roos so well, it forced Sampras to hit the ball into the net. According to Roos, Sampras was so angered by this, he stormed off and never returned to the court.

All of which means, said Roos, "I currently have a winning tennis record against the greatest tennis player of all time".
Old school East Perth fans might remember Moose from back in the day...

It's an interesting decision, to say the least. What could they possibly have gained by advising Voss that he was going now, rather than wait 3 weeks? And to occur on the same day the AFL handed down it's Essendon news, it looks like they made a spur of the moment decision to act.

Melbourne would be well into their search for a new coach, and you would think that if it was going to be Roos then he would have already played his hand by now. Unless Brisbane thought that Hird would fall on his sword and that Roos was a possibility to take that job, but surely they would have sounded him out first?

It certainly appears a complete balls-up at this stage.

As for Voss to Melbourne, I'd think he'd have to be a real big chance if he wanted it.
