Wasn’t much difference between that and Jack Scrimshaw’s hit on Jordan Ridley in Round 1 which was about right: 3 weeks.

Ridley had concussion
Ridley missed the following week

Vlaustin was not concussed
Vlaustin hasn't missed training

You're right. The AFL will call it whatever they like. But it was 100% deliberate.

Nonsense. It was a deliberate and strange action to sweep down a fend and tackle forcefully, not a deliberate action to get him in the head.

A few weeks ago Voss collected Treacy in the face/eye during a goal celebration which required Treacy to get medical attention on the bench. Voss is just a clumsy player.

Sweep down? No-one is seeing that. It was way more than careless - you even call it deliberate. His arm started high from behind his own head and barely lowered as it swung across and into Vlastuin's face. He may be a klutz but he's still responsible for his klutzy actions.

Have a look at the action. If two car crashes are caused by the same law being broken, shall we simply ignore the law?

Just as likely that Voss could have caused a concussion rather than a broken nose.

They’re not miles apart. Try again.

You seem to be saying the actual incident that occurred only warrants a fine or 1 week suspension because it wasn’t something else. And it was an accident.

I disagree with both your reasoning and your recommended penalty. Careless forceful contact to the head is something the game needs to eradicate. In the event of the forceful contact not resulting from an intent to injure, don’t you think the next thing to consider is whether the player initiating that forceful contact to head could have reasonably shown more care so as to avoid the accident he caused to happen?

This is not a Richmond v the world argument. More or less everyone here is agreed bar you, even the majority of Fremantle supporters. You seemed to paint yourself into a corner with the clenched fist v open hand issue. Then when you were shown the hand was clearly open at the point of contact you appear to have felt you had to define this as some sort of acceptable football accident. It is forceful contact to the face with a swinging arm causing a blood nose/broken nose and felling the opponent. With respect, Luke Skywalker belting 7 bells out of Gandalf’s Chevy Chase has nowt to do with it.

Your position and imagery both seem odd to me.
I think it is an acceptable football accident once. I think he deserves between a week and a fine because it should be a readjustment message to the players. That message should be that the AFL will give Voss the benefit of the doubt on this one, but other players are warned that any action that looks like a tackle designed to cover up a strike will be treated harshly.

This didn't look like a hit filled with malice but one of over exuberance.

Now on me changing my opinion on the open hand thing, I of course had to once I was corrected on the fact that contact was made with an open hand. To me it looked like a closed fist all the way through but that was incorrect. In my mind, the open hand makes it more deserving of my desired penalty.

I understand that this game is going to have accidents and I don't like seeing them punished with the same brush as acts with malice intent. Another reason I don't like Voss being penalised harshly is that it opens the door for other actions to be worth a 3 week suspension. Someone getting 3 weeks because they went to spoil the ball and missed doesnt sit right with me. Also, if we take this grading as precedent, if you go up for a hanger and your knee draws blood from your opponent's head, there is a scenario where you win Mark of the Year and a 3 week holiday midseason.

If players run, rather than walk at a slow pace, they are more likely to collide with another player. This could cause a concussion. From now on, all players can only walk during games because of a possible outcome that didn't occur.

What a ridiculous argument.

Except that the two incidents in question are high contact, severe impact… whereas running and walking, while having a difference in probability of injury outcomes between them, do not reach these risk thresholds.

You are a troll.

Dude, you were the one who opened the door with your baffling car crash hypothesis. I just burst it open.

A slight breeze could give Jordan Ridley a concussion.

The hits between Scrimshaw and Voss are similar. The difference being that Vlaustin appears to be a bit more hard headed.

Vlaustin also wasn't concussed when Dangerfield smacked him in the head during the 2020 Grand Final.
