Is there any chance we could lure this man down to tigerland for an assistant role? Surely he can't just step in and be expected to coach. Some of our current crop need a kick in the ass.

pass.

history says the top notch players don't make good coaches.
the only full on class player i can think of that has become a great coach is lethal Leigh Matthews. i reckon players like Craig McCrae would make better coaches than Voss

Au contraire. Kevin Sheedy was a champion player. As was Mick Malthouse.

John Worsfold wasn't any sort of slouch And I watched the '96 Grand Final the other night - Paul Roos was just about best on ground (definately best for the Swans). He was a champion too.

Not that I'm advocating the Tigers employing Voss as a coach (though I'm not against it either, I think it's too early to tell whether he'd be good value or not), I'm just saying that your blanket statement is factually flawed.

i do not agree.
malthouse, Sheedy, woosha, roos were all very good players but no where near in the same caliber as Leigh Matthews, Michael voss....

Royce hart, KB and the like were all better than woosha, roos, Sheedy and malthouse as players, but as coaches cant touch them.

the last elite player before Matthews who coached well would have been Malcom Blight

It seems to be pretty widely acknowledged in the media that Voss has a big contribution to make in the coaching arena.
Looking at it, you'd have to be pretty cynical to disagree: triple premiership captain from one of the most successful winning "cultures" in AFL/VFL, studied under someone who has to be considered a modern coaching great and has demonstrated himself in the media as articulate and a more than reasonable football analyst.
Miller and March would be grossly derelict in their duty if they weren't doing everything they can to get Voss to the club as an assistant. It's time the club opened up the purse strings and spent a bit on one of the most "fiscally responsible" football departments in the league and give us a chance of competing with the big boys. Imagine The Voss walking into team meetings with our young boys, that alone is worth the dollars.
Don't know if Vossy would be keen though, and I think he'll get a few offers.....

i agree in part. But after what Voss said in the papers about Charman, why would we want Voss at tigerland. He basically sank his boot into us warning Charman not to come here(not that i want him too).
Also, i don't think miller has a say or will have, my money he will be gone at years end (fingers crossed) .
Voss must do an apprenticeship before he coaches. My guess is , he will take an assistant role at say a collingwood, Adelaide or even WCE, and then return to coach the lions as soon as Leigh Matthews is gone

I think you might find that Wallace may not be too keen on that, as pressure might start to build on him from within

Voss is on good coin in the media, don't reckon he'd even give Richmond a second glance to be honest.

Yeah heaven forbid we get an explayer who was a 3 time premeirship captain under Leigh Matthews a chance at being an Assistant Coach at our club.

Why the hell would we even bother?

Why would he want to be an Assistant Coach at Richmond anyway? When you could probably take your pick at 15 better clubs.

Leigh Mathews, Malcolm Blight, Paul Roos, Terry Wallace were all absolute guns, Brownlow medal contenders or winners.

Voss has already stated that he wants a bit of time out from full time footy and stay in the media. He is an assistant with the AFL/AIS scholarship players (under 17's) and recently went to Africa with them. His knowledge of the game would be invaluable to us and when the time is right we should pursue him with great vigour:thumbsu:

I would be keen to see Garry Lyon replace Wallace at the end of the year. He talks Richmond up in the media all the time and I think the fact that he has shyed away from coaching so long makes him a really goer :thumbsu: :thumbsu: :p

I am going to go against common thought here as it's what I honestly feel. I truly believe on what I've seen over his career and seen/heard now Voss is on TV that he is too much of a big kid to be a coach. He doesn't seem overly intelligent either. I loved him as a player. No doubt an absolute champion. As a coach though not for me. His analysis on games is just ok, nothing that anyone with half a footy brain could come up with. This is just my opinion and apart from the fact that he is held in awe by current players and well respected by past teammates and opponants I have not heard any reasons as to why he would be a great coaching prospect. I hope he proves me wrong if he comes to the tiges.

The list is long- Barassi, Blight, Roos, Coleman, Jesaulenko, Matthews. All full on class. There are dozens of state reps, all aussies as well that have made a good fist of coaching. Others such as Bartlett, Hart, B Davis, etc did not have the cattle.

If we replaced Wallace with Lyon I would not buy a membership.

Lyon is too scared to upset anyone which is why he talks clubs up.

Going for Lyon would be up there with getting Frawley.

The fact that he has shyed away from coaching means he doesnt know whether he wants to do it. Good coaches WANT to coach and will take up an assistant role over media,.

Yuk! I would rather get Trevor Marmalade than Garry Lyon! Tuesdays with Trevor would be a hell of a lot funnier than Tuesdays with Terry! :)

he wont come to us, why would he?
and im not convinced he will be a good coach

I read that too and was dissapointed. He said Brisbane were on the up whereas we aren't going anywhere fast. Would love him as a midfield coach but I cant see a champion like him joining a rabble like us.

Twas sarcasm, have you never noticed how much of a Richmond basher Lyon is

Wih McRae on board I think adding Voss as a player development officer would not work, however if Voss was to test the waters as a coach and Collins was to move on from Coburg I would like to see Voss as coach of Coburg. That way he has a hands on role with the development of the kids through the whole year. Could work wonders for kids like Casserly, Edwards, Connors, Polo, Lids, Foley and the next batch we bring through. However I doubt that Voss would have anything to do with the Tigers especially after his comments about them in regards to the Charman issue. When he basically said the club was a long way of being a successful out fit.
