I would have kept Macdonald, Clousten and Dalzeill.

MacDonald made it clear he wanted to leave.
No one wanted Clousten.
Dalziell trade for Slaker is a good un so far. There was also plenty of criticism around here of Bradd's game last year and this year he is receiving the same on the West Coast broad.

If we had kept any of these players and been in the position we are now this board would have been critical of the club for not trading/delisted.

Agree with Old Den on this one.

....this for the people who allege that "Voss threw threw away the future"by not going extensively and exclusively for youth in the 2009 National Draft.

Spot on. We gave away pick 12 and a 3rd year player ultimately. I am staggered at the lack of analysis in the football world. The Fevola trade may have been the wrong one for other reasons, not the trading of pick 12 and a non proven 3rd year player. I was staggered at James Hirds statement that we gave up 4 picks in the draft on last nights Couch. Who are these 4 picks? Are the two 1st year debutantes this year a figment of my imagination?

You are 100% correct, unfortunately due to our club being far far away, an expose or real analysis is a waste of time as it aint gonna shift any units, unless of course it's a Fev story.

West Coast and ourselves should be getting drilled by the AFL media, why not? Because we aren't in Melbourne.

I want someone to get into the real story to expose the Bowers / Kelly boys club but sadly they just touch on things quote the usual stuff and move on.

I can't believe the over reaction to the drafting. I wouldn't have changed a thing.

...
We may have picked up the next Barlow last year, although Staker could be the next Martin Pike, Raines could be the new Rhyce Shaw (unlikely I know but stranger things and all that), or we might have picked up another Spandermann or Oakley-Nichols or Gumbleton (:p). Would of been happy with an influx of Maguire, Fev, X along with a few more draftees. We've seen how well we've drafted last year and this year (despite less picks) so why not give your recruiters much of a chance.
...
That's about it.
I reckon there's 5 picks so far that you could call a 'success' from the PSD & Rookie drafts, plus one or two late ND picks you could have had a look at.. Heck even we found a couple of smalls, and our record finding smalls the last 10 years has been abysmal.
Obviously no-one's going to get every pick right, which (IMHO) is why you need to take more picks, even if they are a bit later on.

ps from what I've heard, the other 2 clubs who put in an offer for Lovey were you lot & Port... dodged a bullet!

We did take a look at a couple of kids late in the in the 2009 ND and they are now on our rookie list...Mitch Golby and Josh Dyson;).

Interestingly, with all the Hoo Haa about the club neglecting youth,in the last 2 ND's and PSD's the Lions have drafted 11 "kids" to say...Essendon's 8 "kids" and 1 mature aged player to Essendon's 3...(2 in their mid 20's).

Spot on I was staggered at James Hirds statement that we gave up 4 picks in the draft on last nights Couch. Who are these 4 picks? Are the two 1st year debutantes this year a figment of my imagination?

I'd like to see it again ....but I'm pretty sure Hird completely stuffed up with the "picks" he reckoned we gave up.

He was rattling off Picks 12, 24, 27 and 40-something as those we had "given up"

Didn't we actually get 27 from Carlton as part of the Henderson/Fev trade?

I was reading some shyte thread on the main board attacking us as giving up our youth and the as usual articulates such as Old Den, Belg, RoyLion and a couple of others wrote some nice stuff and got the usual inarticulate junk that the majority of internet talk sites are but I thought RoyLions trading post was particularly good. Sorry to quote you again Roylion but quality deserves a showing.

I think James Hird, who I generally respect, need's to get his act together if he is going to have an opinion on something that he obviously had done no research on. Even Sheahan and Heally were a bit put out and moved it on very quickly for fear of embarrassing him. This was not just a matter of opinion. This was getting ones facts wrong.

Interestingly I was having this discussion with a bloke I know on Tuesday and he defended Hird with a statement about our position proving Hird correct so I cut and pasted this and showed him. He changed his mind as he had to agree pick 12 and Henderson was hardly the trashing of our future and we had selected other youngsters. A lesson to learn from this is that a lot of footy fans outside of the hardcore sites such as Bigfooty (were analyse of this type can sometimes be discussed sensibly and heavily) do not really delve too deeply what goes on with an example say of drafting. They take at face value the information told to them by the media where headlines are the key. The Fevola trade for mine was not the right trade for us because he did not fit our culture, we are not into New Idea histrionics by nature, but I understand the reason why we traded for a player of his ability totally. So therefore for all my feelings that it was a mistake for cultural reasons it has nothing to do with him as a player. He has been Ok if the cold hard figures are put forward but a lot of the public see a player with a poor media profile and then blame him for poor body English as well if he is not dominating. They then see or hear of a Hird making such a statement and it becomes a fact.

It's disappointing when media people (particularly Hird who's normally quite good) can't be bothered to spend 10 minutes on wikipedia doing their research.

The number of times I've heard we had the rookie pick straight before Barlow....
