IMO, we need to get away from this assersion that the next captain must be a young guy who will do it for the next 5+ years. IMO it should be the best man for the job and should be reviewed each and every year. Roo is obviously the best man for the job at the moment and has been since Bicks stepped down. Goodwin is IMO the next captain of the AFC. He will still be here next year, he is in his prime and will be the best man for the job unless he is injured.

VB, Thomo, Rutts and quite a few others will get their chance to push for their opportunity to lead the club, but IMO they arent as ready and capable as Goody is right now.

I doubt Goodwin will ever be made captain. That's nothing to do with the "betting scandal" but more to do with the fact that if they want to make someone his age captain, they may as well stick with Roo.

Therefore, it needs to go to a younger player when a change occurs. To me it's a choice between VB and Rutten, with Rutten getting my nod at this stage.

If Roo retires at the end of this year then I can pretty much guarantee that VB or Rutten will not be given the captaincy. It will go to someone who can take it on now and "bridge the gap" until one of the youngsters is ready to take it in. Goodwin is as good a candidate as any.

Yep, agree. There are only three others to fill the gap, Goody, Macca and Tyson.

You only have to look at West Coast to see that appointing a young player as captain isn't really the best choice no matter how talented they are. Sure Judd is a star player, but all I see is Cousins giving the rallying speeches and generally playing the leading role across the field. That stupid captaincy rotation at St Kilda is another example.

Thats just not good enough. VB is just too young and hasn't shown enough on the ground (off field and training aside). If he really stands up this year and averages near 20 disposals a game, I'll support him, but I still think...

Rutten is at a good age, already has won an AA, and one of the toughest guys in the competition. Reminds me of a younger Roo. BRING ON THE TRUCK!

If the gambling ficaso was enough to discount Goodwin from the running then he would have been removed from the leadership group or at least not be given vice-captaincy. His gambling will have no effect on it what so ever.

I also very much doubt that the captaincy will go to a FB!
