Great to see that Adam is doing what he does best tagging, We also got a lot more run out of our backline, they just need to learn how to spoil better close to goals, tends to be evryone up and they get an easy goal or our defender stuck one on one with no chopout. On the positive side the defenders took a few contested marks this week.

Another positive compared to last year is our experienced players appearing as the best players, apart from Priddis the experienced players were generally rubbish for most of last year. In order for the young blokes to improve we need the old blokes to help them along

Tagged Pearce out of the game, got a few touches himself and didn't do much wrong. Give him a break

I personally think that Pearce is a downhill skier and if Port don't do well he doesn't do well. It doen't matter who was on him. Likewise when Port are going well it doesn't matter who you have on him he will break the game open.
For me when Port got their patches of play Pearce was still instrumental in setting some of them up. He ended up with 17 disposals and I don't recall any of them being too bad.

5 - Embley - Great leadership again played that game like he did against the other mob from Adelaide during his heydays.
4 - Shuey - looks a class above our other young mids (Except Gaff - looks class).
3 - Cox - Was excellent again. Again he deserved top spot but that just shows the games that Embley + Shuey had.
2 - Kennedy - Ahh the Kennedy from the first half of last year, a much welcome return.
1 - Hurn - solid game and was good when required all game.

Yeah 7 clangers is telling. But when I noticed Pearce it was during Port's runs and I don't believe he was clangering then. Hence the downhill skier. What I meant by outpointing is that when you watch ASelwood he actually outpoints the guy he is tagging. It's not winning the possession yourself it's out positioning, getting ready to tackle the moment he even touches the ball. ASelwood is great at this. It is hard to describe but using Brent Harvey / ASelwood comparison, you saw Harvey at the stoppages, you saw North trying to use him, you saw him trying to get into the game. Each time this was happening ASelwood was there to negate, interupt & annoy.
A lot of the game I did not see Pearce at stoppages his clearnce work was non-existant. He is an outside recevier (downhill skier) and if Port don't get the ball he doesn't .
Since he won his rising star award how many teams has he carved up since then? His fortunes have followed Ports over hte last couple of years. He maybe rips apart 1-2 teams a year. In my books hardly worth a hard tag.
To me it's like tagging DalSanto, when in reality the Saints don't get the ball -he doesn't get the ball.
Fair call about Pearce? I'm interested to hear what other people think about him. As the game I remember him being instumental in against us they were up all day and won by 91 points. Since that game, SBurgoyne, Rodan, Davenport have been far bigger thorns in our side. In tight close ones (which we have played a few) I don't recall him being the difference between the 2 teams. I may be off, as I have not checked stats but don't remember cursing him anytime since then.

Look, I understand you, and 95% of Eagles supporters, don't want to give McGinnity any kudos. That's OK, (it's like me with Hinkley, and a few others now, at Swans ) but if a bloke gets away and is a downhill skier, you've got to prevent him from getting on the downhill, if you understand what I am saying?
It's all well and good to say if the team doesn't get it, they won't get it, but you have to prevent that from happening, that's where his role came in. Plus, I saw him execute a perfectly nice pass, 35-40m, in the middle of the ground. That's a bonus.

Exactly and exactly. Firstly, the only way to prevent downhill skiers getting on top is to stop the momentum, nip it in the bud before they get on the slopes. If that fails then my favoured method, which has virtually been outlawed now, is to s*#*mix them. Hit them hard so they stay on the outside.
Secondly, I think McG will be in and out of the team based on opposition. Can see him in against teams like Collingwood, Essendon, Geelong where you are going to try and stop their run, or limit their run.

The comment on why do teams (and nearly all of them do) tag pearce is simple, if they don't, they pay the price and port usually win due to him carving them up. He is an outside player and told to play that role..take a look at him; he is lightly built, he is quick and has a penetrating kick, so once he gets the ball he is dangerous. Thing is when he does not get the ball he is crucified by his own supporters and others and called a downhill skier. The triers such as Kornes and Casissi are rarely attacked cos the difference between their best and worst is not that noticeable cos they just plug away and are not game breakers. Port just do not play as a team, block, shepherd or talk. They lack good coaches and players to make it to the eight. The score flattered us and you were the far better side.
