Alright, I think after this game, I'm just tagging people to see how many turn up.

for anyone new, voting system is 12 votes anyway you like.
Maximum 12. You can award fewer.
I also tally negative votes, mostly for end of year stuff as it can sometimes negatively impact the round voting.
It only gets counted towards round voting if it's within reason.

3 - J. Lever
3 - M. Gawn
3 - C. Oliver
2 - C. Petracca
1 - C. Salem

Lockhart 3
Lever 2
Hibberd 1

our back 6 are doing a miracle job even if no one can see it, without them we’d be getting flogged worse than we did tonight every week. No one forward of defence deserves to go near a vote

He's a young lad and it was insipid decision by Goody to bring another inside mid in, but Sparrow got votes for getting in the way of Oliver and Viney?

The stuff Kane Cornes talked about was all stuff that we were figuring out until he came in and displaced Gus from the centre bounce rotation. Viney and Clarry were starting to actually space themselves around stoppages and get into space, offer a handball receive for a teammate. Gussy was starting to at least take up good defensive positions at stoppages.

Sparrow to me seems like he will be at his best long term as the guy at the coalface getting first use of the footy, a bull with a genuine eye for it at ground level. You can see he's got a genuine ability inside and the body to play that role too even from the Port drubbing. However, that kind of skillset is useless next to Viney and Clarry. Disposal was shithouse all day because he was playing as the handball receive guy for Clarry and Vines, a role he's not suited for.

Nothing against the kid. Many teams in the comp could use a Sparrow. We can't.

If I was the Swans, Blues or Dons I'd definitely be looking at a trade for Sparrow; Vines is 26 seemingly with foot issues out of the way/managed(pace is back) and Clarry only 23. Trac 24. Then you've got Harmes and Gus, and even if we binned both of them from the midfield then you have Salem who would offer a much better complement to our 3 best mids.

If you look at the Eagles midfield mix, I mean Clarry and Vines are better at the coalface than anyone on their team, but guys like Kelly Shuey can spread from the contest and play as the receiver on the edge of the stoppage ready to burst forward and gain 60m. Tigers have guys like Bolton Lambert Edwards Cotchin Martin around really only one inside bull in Dion Prestia. Lions were running Zorko, Rayner, Mcluggage through their centre bounces.

Right now Clarry and Viney are basically the same player, except for that archetype(think Prestia Wines Libba Lyons) they are decently quick and most of all they are building chemistry. Gussy is supposed to complement them well but he's looking cooked, might be time to move him on. I love Harmes but I'm not quite sure what he brings inside unless he's tagging; quick decision making isn't there, isn't particularly clean(compared to Trac and Clarry at least), not particularly good at getting it at the coalface. And Sparrow is the worst fit in our current midfield mix of them all. Only Trac can play off others and spread from stoppages pretty well.

IMO the midfield mix for us going forward should only have Clarry Vines Trac of the current group. Adding to that should be someone like Salem, Kozzie(when he gets more experience because he is so clean at ground level), but **** it for the rest of the season a Hannan, Lockhart or Bennell would also do.

Do we have the time to invest in Sparrow, given its taken all of 2019 and a fair few games of 2020 for Viney and Clarry to stop getting in each other's way? Can he be relevantly better than the quality inside mids we've lost the last few years? Is there a likely future where even 2 of those 3 can coexist in one midfield?

Maynard had injury issues leading to his retirement but at Casey he was clearly a good inside mid, strong around the footy, a budget Greenwood. Dom Tyson went from the most crowded one dimensional midfield group to the 2nd most crowded one dimensional inside midfield group, but he's had multiple seasons being a clearance beast and no doubt on a team like Carlton he'd be fantastic.

TL;DR -9 votes for Sparrow. Was put in a poor role for him, but was a big negative in terms of impact. Maxy dominated Ladhams in the ruck and around the ground. In a best and fairest vote, you don't just give your superstars zero votes when they only have an A- game compared to the A+ game they're capable of.

"Maxy" dominated yet your mates Viney and Oliver did sweet **** all with it. Carry couldn't hit the side of barn via foot all night inbetween giving off 30 cm handballs to teammates under pressure or not ready for the ball. Viney has been great the past few weeks but he lacked enthusiasm and energy big time, sparrow had nothing to do with him playing bad.

Sparrow had a crack, put his nose over the ball and applied pressure, ran hard both ways, unlike our downhill skiing A graders.

Given no one actually blocks for each other in there and is just looking to fill up their stat sheet, you could argue Sparrow's inclusion as a staring mid might make some sense and be a nice change of pace, perhaps we could give him a role, have him looking to help the likes of Trac get loose, turn him into his bodyguard somewhat.

The midfield needs a good kick up the arse honestly. It's long overdue for a shake up.

Honestly I'd look to play Viney as a defensive forward for heavy potions of games for the rest of the year, his ball use inside 50 has been pretty good at times this season also. Couldn't be any worse at it than Harmes or Jones are.

I'd start giving Sparrow some proper midfield time to see what we've got. Right now we are none the wiser.

Worst case scenario is we drive up his trade value by the end of the year if we are looking to move him on. Best case scenario we find out he's got more of a future at this club than the likes of Brayshaw and Harmes.
