A few theories as to why the move in the thread.

  1. Keep out the riff raff and gouge a bit more money out of some members. It seems that in the year of "I am Carlton" some are more Carlton than others. Given they may lose money from downgrading memberships or even failure to renew and loss of spend in other areas, I'm not sure they will make a great deal.
  2. The valid issue of vote stacking. As this is illegal under the constitution surely some action should have been taken against individuals proven to have been guilty of it. If it has happened shouldn't they reveal that to the members and if it has happened have any current or past board members benefited. If certain categories of club memberships don't vote in a way the current board approve of, does not in itself have to be vote stacking, perhaps there are other issues and concerns at play. Identifying and addressing those issues, if they exist could be a better solution rather than run the risk of disenfranchising some members. ODN's suggestion of years as a member as part of the qualification could help with the issue.
It does seem a bit silly that many will lose their right to vote yet the board can appoint people to the board who don't meet their own future criteria as an "ordinary member". So in the future you may lose your vote, but if you play your cards right you could become part of the board without being elected, but only if they like you mind:D

I have the silver long distance membership. Living in Adelaide it's pretty pointless to have anything else as I only get to the very odd game in Melbourne.

I still like to feel a part of the club though and contribute something moneywise. I did contribute to the Visy Park upgrade fund too. I get along to all the Adelaide matches and have done since the Crows entered the competition. I'm not hugely worried about the change but it does feel like a bit of a slap in the face to non-Victorian supporters.
Well done Neese:thumbsu: I imagine a number of interstate and long distance members also contributed to the Visy Park upgrade fund. Members who are pretty much donating to the club with their membership, because they can't to many if any games are showing a particular dedication to the club. Which is why I can't understand taking away their voting rights. Yep some may not exercise that right, but they should at least have the choice:)

not that i care about voting (as i trust the rest of you :p) but i have the long distance membership. which fair enough is not the most expensive membership. but last year i spent over $500 from the carlton shop online and in store. if i did care about voting, id like to believe that would allow me to have a say!

I tackled the club on this issue. The amendment to the constitution was passed in December.

According to the response I received from the club, the loss of voting rights for interstate members was an "unintentional oversight" in the recent amendments.

So the club couldn't work out that interstate members would be unlikely to hold 11 game memberships? And that as a result, this amendment would be stripping many interstate members of their voting rights?

Apparently the issue will be revisited at the 2012 AGM with a view to being corrected. I believe that won't be until the end of this year however.

One of the reasons I take a membership out is to have the right to vote. I want a say in the running of the club. To retain that right I now have to take out an 11 game membership until they fix their stuff up (which I won't be doing of course).

I wonder about the professionalism of this organization some times. This is just amateur hour stuff.

I was the same when I lived in Adelaide. And I agree with the OP. Some people can't afford a big membership, and I think there are enough situations in life where the poor have their voice taken away, without this adding to it. Our club should be inclusive of all its fans and be proud of the fact.
