good points rayz, and Im not convinced the outs we have from last week is necessarily going to weaken our side with the likes of thursty and collins to come in both I would expect to have at least the impact of Luke and Coonors...i think we'll make a game of it

Hoping so mate, Melbourne aren't very strong in attack ATM. :thumbsu:

I was thinking about this myself the other day, although if you compare it to us we have:
Cousins, Newman (who at 28 will probably not play in our next premiership), Tuck, Simmonds, King, McMahon (granted he's not playing games but he's still on the list), Polak (same as McMahon).
So we aren't that different.
It's just that our old guys are shitter than theirs.

I was talking more about the odds and our formline T4p, we haven't played many of our older blokes. Tuck in the midfield, McMahon off the HBF, Polak at FF, three games from a player like King instead of Relton or another 6 possession zero impact kid, Cousins in the lineup having played three straight and gaining fitness - all those things do make us a stronger side and a fair bit closer to capable of doing what Melbourne's done so far.

I'm interested in this last point. Could you please list the players that have been retained by Melbourne that wouldn't have survived the cut at Richmond.

I don't think at least one of Bate or Newton would have been retained, we traded Schulz quite happily and I rate him a better forward than either, or at least very comparable. We also dumped Hughes and Putt, so it was a complete purge of any KPF we thought wasn't going to make it. I find it hard to believe we'd rate Bate or Newton as a good enough shot of making it.

Green and Bruce are pretty similar to us retaining Brown and Bowden - as far as I'm aware both would have gone around again if wanted. Granted, our two are a little older, but they would have added similar output...significantly better than a <10 games kid.

I don't think Jones or Moloney have good enough disposal for Hardwick to retain both, probably either. Tuck is a far better mid than either but Hardwick won't play him there, apparently because of his disposal. We don't play any taggers ATM, and the only bloke we find room for in the midfield whose disposal could be called into question is Jackson - and he offers more than Jones or Moloney.

We could have had a crack at MacDonald if we'd wanted, or several similar uncontracted players with perceived disposal flaws, we avoided them all.

Out of the others you have mentioned it's worth noting that Bate, Newton and Jones are all younger than Delido so there not actually that "mature".

Mature bodied compared to what we've deliberately left ourselves and played so far.

They talked about who would be stand in captain.

I think Deledio should be chosen. Could be that extra motivation he needs to take the next level.

I believe captaincy should be acheived by those who have shown characteristics of a captain , not given to someone in hope it brings out those characteristics ?
In other words !
Someone who as captain can inspire others, rather than needing the captaincy to get inspired !!

Pretty sure DH would have kept Bate. A very good kick and a great head on his shoulders and attitude, just what DH has been looking to bring in to the club.

Also, Melbourne have had their fair share share of injuries this season, to say the very least.

I said above Lids, but have changed my mind to Jackson.

Also, McMahon has a shoulder injury, so wont be available.

Hmm McDonald, Bruce, Green are all seasoned finals campaigners I'm pretty sure they would have met the requirements of Hardwick's strenous list cuttting. Newton - 9 days younger
Bate - 1 month younger

Lol I know but the post I was replying to seemed to think they were seasoned veteran's when there in face not even halfway through their footy careers.

Well Newton probably is but you know

No, the way I read it, the likes of Green & Bruce were listed as oldies. Rayzor mentioned the others as players DH would have cut due to spud-ness. I disagree with Bate in that regard, he would've been kept IMO.

Apparently Axel will be playing for Coburg 1sts this week. Likely to be given limited game time still.

DH said 2 or 3 youngsters to make their debuts. Then later on mentioned the names of Webberley, Astbury, Taylor and Dea.

I am guessing if Newman doesn't play (likely by sounds of it), then we will have three debutants.

Also, he made the point AGAIN that we are not concentrating on developing our forward line at the moment, concentrating on defense. This might suggest that only one of the debutants will be a forward. Considering most of our backline will be missing this week. Just an assumption.

KElvin Moore is really going to have to step up this week, really the only experienced defender we will be fielding in the absence of mcguane, thursty (Apparently is playing someone said) newman (in strong doubt) will need to show lots of leadership by doing the right things like spoiling from behind ect hopefully rance may step up under the pressure

anyone else a little excited by Dea, Astbury and Taylor with these three making there debut that leaves three people on our seniour list that haven't played a game (Griff, Grimes and Webb)

Or not

damn, posted something like this about Moore without seeing this.

Tuck named in midfield, apparently we want to win this week?

He's got something to work with timoc, I must admit I don't know anything about his attitude or mental capacities and that is something that often swings me.

For quite a while I've rated him higher than Newton, but I can't see either becoming worthwhile KPF's, so I'd want to be fairly confident he can offer something elsewhere, and as you say, it may be his disposal which allows for that.

I probably watch less Melbourne than any other club bar Adelaide, I'd be lucky to catch 40% of their games, but that's been my impressions...it's easy to miss important signs when you're only seeing young players that often.

If Garland's made a full recovery Bailey would be mad not to give him a sustained run in the forwardline later in the season, I can only think of a handful of junior forwards I've seen with more raw talent than him. I actually rated him above Reiwoldt because he had less to overcome athletically and he was virtually untapped in the football sense, whereas Jack had lived footy since the day he was born.

Also, Melbourne have had their fair share share of injuries this season, to say the very least.

Yep, no doubt mate, but I'm sure you'd agree that Melbourne would very likely play the majority of the blokes I mentioned anyway, ahead of juniors like Bail, Bennell, Strauss, McKenzie etc..

Bail, Bennell and McKenzie are all playing this week.

Both McKenzie and Bennell have played all 3 games and played well.

Bail has played the last two games and also played very well.

Strauss played the first two games of the season.

Anyone think we will or should play a defensive forward on Grimes? Despite his youth, he plays a big part in their rebounding from the backline, was a major factor in their win over the Crows last week.

I don't think we have concentrated much on shutting down opposition players this year, which I assume is to do with our intent on learning the new game plane. As far as I can tell, even Jackson hasn't really been used as a hard tag as yet.

He's gotta shutdown James McDonald from having an influence, he's been an inspiration for them averaging about 10 tackles a game and 23 touches, if Jacko can curb his influence it could give their new found morale and work ethic a bitch slap in the face. He's gotta do it.

Who can stop Davey? I wouldn't be surprised if King gets a run with role on him, shakes him up a bit, could give Kingy a purpose........and a target to release his anger on.

I'd expect McDonald to be shoulder to shoulder with Lids for 100 mins on Sunday afternoon.

Actually completely forgot about Davey...definate Tag to him!

I do not like Jake King one bit, however the one game I thought he looked like an AFL player was when he shut down Lovett las year and kicked 3 on him. Matt White could run with Davey....he is terrible but has running ability and heart!
