VFL vs North Melbourne. 4.07.21

2.5 in a half is quite frankly pathetic, garbage umpiring as McComb gets a twofer where a Norf player crashes into his back while he didn't have the ball and then they hand over a free kick to the Norf player for high contact.

Pretty poor showing - with most of our AFL players playing well below their best.

West - trying hard 24 touches but too many show-pony hand passes and doesn’t look ready yet. Not in the best Mids - behind the VFL Mids.

Bedendo - was very good - beautiful kick in hard conditions and presented well. Looks a real threat and just turning 19 (his birthday) he looks a special.

Butler - he looks smooth and made a contribution - two goals and some good touches but just doesn’t get anywhere near enough of it. Super runner though and still running hard even at the end. Made a tackle in the back 50 that almost saved the game.

Sweet - absolutely smashed by Soup

JUH - is working hard but is getting terrible passes or support. Kicked a great goal early in the final quarter. Double teamed all day but struggle to win even when 1:1. Not helped but not ready. Great run down turnover in the last quarter showing his competitiveness.

Schache - was invisible until he went to CHB for a small period - where he took a few and looked decent. Even with JUH double team he brought no real presence or threat - really disappointing I am afraid.

McNeil - very fumbly and didn’t impact as much as we would have hoped. 24 touches so OK.

Hayes - one of best listed players possession wise but poor disposal let him down again. He just runs and runs.

Khamis - took a good mark but mistimed so many things.

Crozier - looked too good for this level and was taking intercept marks again but also poor disposal. 28 disposals and 10 marks should get him back in the AFL.

R.Smith - was solid but not great

Raak - did some really good things but also brain explosions. I see a bit of a young Dylan Grimes about him.

Cavarro was solid but nothing special.

Super junior - showed some good things loves the contact and one of the few who didn’t take a backward step.

BTW - Van Der Heuval (no idea of spelling) looks like a great intercept marker and good size. What do we know about him? Shows Lever glimpses.

My take. Lock Bedendo in for best 22 in 2023. He will get his opportunity next year and will be a lock in 2023. Class player. Schache in defence was pretty good for all of a quarter or so. Average rest of the day but he wasn’t alone and it was difficult conditions for bigs. Not sure where West is at - just not showing enough. Ordinary game from Sweet and beaten in the ruck by BTC. JUH had a serviceable game. Difficult in the conditions for him and double teamed consistently. Hayes is a running machine but just not AFL quality, butchers it too much. Most other AFL listed players were just average, certainly no standouts on the day. Reuben Williams looks a mile off AFL standard. Cavarra shows flashes and could be a handy small forward but I suspect he will not get the opportunity to do so.

You can make all the excuses you want, but good players find a way to impact the game. They find a way.

Yes, the conditions and delivery are not great. Yes, he is at times being double teamed.

We are playing 21st placed VFL side at home, and he should be playing a lot better.

If anything, JUH performance so far has vindicated the coaching panel’s decision not to select him.

You are literally advocating for a first year KPF who has not kicked a goal against a 21st placed VFL team to be selected and picked in the AFL team which is competing for top spot, has scored the most points in the competition and already has Naughton and Bruce in it.

North had actually found some form coming into today's game with 3 straight wins (2 over decent teams in Werribee and Coburg) were a long way from the bottom.

What I saw of the game, have to agree with above. I was wondering who no. 70 was and thoughts of putting him on rookie list if we could.

Three things I noticed were:
1. McComb is a serious player, looks good enough to play AFL
2. JUH got to good positions a number of times, but the entries to him were horrific.
3. Shaq was very good down back, wish we would persist with him there for a month and see how he goes

100% agree. That contested mark he took out bodying his opponent was all you needed to see to know he's worth persisting with in defence. He's not going to make it at the Bulldogs as a forward, needs a chance to save his career in defence imo.
