I don't think it should be blamed on the changes. It's not to say Macmillan and Hrovat are best 22 but they weren't to blame, quite simply we'd just rather have the guys they replaced - to a degree, this game didn't suit Durdin and LDU is exhausted, two of Higgins/Garner/Wood and we win. Some people wanted Hosie to debut over Rat, made no sense. Both did good things. Garner would have made a difference but we can hardly reduce his punishment, it's a bad look. In honesty the biggest head scratcher was Taylor, he has some serious special traits but he needs two pre-seasons.

No team could have covered Tippa today, what a unit. One of the strongest players for his size I've ever seen. Ultimately he was the difference.

A few guys a bit spent at the moment - Cunners, Ziebell, Simpkin. Bashing and crashing is a hard game plan to sustain.

Umpiring was pus but that's out of our control.

I thought that was Polec's best game for us today. He has a sublime kick on him. Man I wish he did better with that shot from the boundary in the last, he's been very good at them. Added some hardness the last few weeks, he's bought in.

Cam Zurhaar is elite. The blokes know it. When he nailed that goal on half time (quarter time?) the bull gesture from Kayne was hilarious.

Looking forward to the response next week.

Obviously that was an immensely deflating finish, but realistically we were completely outplayed for the middle two quarters and lucky to be in it at the final break. From there, we put in a full quarter of the exact kind of hard graft that will see us win more matches than not, closing their options down and dominating play - they just pulled out a freak goal to pinch it at the end. It's absolutely gutting, but we can't expect to win if we make it as easy as we did for them to move the ball around like we did for half the game. And the umpiring does warrant a mention, not because it was biased but because it was plainly inconsistent, blatant frees were frequently missed (trips, throws, clear holding the balls), and the overall impact of that inconsistency was in their favour...

From a coaching side of things...? Clearly I'm no expert, but it looked like we were a bit shapeless in the third quarter, kicking to our forwards' disadvantage or picking out the wrong options often - not sure why, maybe we tried to change something up and it just didn't work out? Much better in the last, even if Atley's late turnover was a seriously bad judgement. Not sure we did enough before then to fix up our leaky centre clearance work, we're still far too one-note there and it still seems like all our opponents get easy clearances far more often than we do. In general, it just seemed like they were ready for us and worked to constrain us a bit, whereas we allowed them to get a fair chunk of the game on their terms. If Shaw gets the credit for our turnaround, our rediscovered hard ethos, and the defensive grind that got us back in front in the last term, then those issues are on him too. Still, nothing today stops him being a solid candidate for senior coach next year - just a few areas that need improvement, because no doubt, with the value of playing the way we have been, other coaches will work on shutting us in much the same ways as today.

As for this board and its whipping boys, it seems people saw what they wanted to see. McMillan was ordinary, had a shaky start then put in some good efforts, only to badly misplay the contest with Laverde late in the last term, whilst Hrovat was above average, very dynamic early and put the pressure on their players plenty after that - neither were super today, but the incessant criticism of those two is unfair when there were quite a few others who were worse or not much better today. I'd actually like to see Hrovat stay in for a week or two, to get a proper look at what he can still offer (and not just as a late inclusion)... although he might be the one who goes out to get Higgins back in.

Loved this post - until Hrovat comments. But otherwise spot on.

It’s incompetence by the umpires.

Lowering or ducking is prior opportunity, plain and simple.

He does it all the time, because you can’t execute a tackle that won’t go high.

I don’t mind if he attempts it, just pay the free kick if the player wraps him up on the ground and high contact should be play on.
I agree. He drops to his knees. What I'm saying is that there is more to the umpiring "mistakes" than incompetence.

To be honest we didn’t deserve that win

They dominated us for most of the game

Some awful decisions cost us in the end and we absolutely spent all our tickets in the end. Plus we had so many players invisible and still lost by **** all

Was a great game to watch

Oh and Razor Ray can **** right off. Absolute flog. Can’t wait until the parasite retires

I swear there were heaps of * supporters calling for Zac Clarke to be dropped for this game, such was his poor form, Goldy made him look like All Australian class for 3 Q's, one of the only stat i'm 100% sure he won was free kicks for :'(

The rules are black and white. So you are saying that they just ignore the rules now?

How Taylor was not given a free kick when you compare the one given to ATM in the first is just flabbergasting.

If you pay one you have to pay the other.

I was right in the thick of things...that final goal sunk me so hard..tough pill to swallow

Late withdrawal of Wood upset what was a pretty well structured forward line in the Shaw Era (if there’s such a thing, wait and see I guess). The mids being beaten for large parts of the game made it harder again. Huge game from Brown and another really good game from Zurhaar almost rebalanced it in our favour. Turner, Larkey and Taylor had little effect on the game in an attacking sense.
Hrovat is probably the JMac of the forward line on here but did some good things. But yeah, not convinced he gets a game in a North side that wants to really challenge.
Tarrant and Marley were excellent.

He's s**t this week after blitzing for the last month?
Amazing how quick some are to send our captain to the shooting gallery...

He was our only midfielder to top 20 possessions. We got sfa out of all mids all game. Simple stuff.

JZ - 20
Polec - 19
Jy - 18
Frog - 16
Jed - 17
Ben - 15
Ahern - 12.

Taz with 22 our leading possession getter lol

People harping on about Macmillan and Hrovat might want to stand back and think about where we lost the game today: we were annihilated in the midfield. Absolutely annihilated.

Centre clearances: 15 - 8 against
clearances: 44 - 32 against
Top 4 midfielders’ possessions: 98 - 74 against

That’s an extra midfielder and that’s the ball game right there.

As others have said, lost it in selection largely. Jy and Jack down hurt while Cunners shows he is not in the absolute elite yet

12 disposals @ 50%, 1 clearance, 1 tackle. Did he register double digits for pressure acts?

WHY, OH WHY, CAN'T HE GET A GAME?!

708512

But yeah, how shit were MacMillan, Hrovat, Ziebell, Goldstein, etc.?

Cunners not being elite is straight up bullshit.

No mid in the game, ever can play well with a tagger tackling them before the ball touches their hands...
