Saw two games live this weekend, here are the players that stood out for mine:

West Perth vs Claremont
Kane Bevan (WP #9) - I think we all know what Bevan is capable of at this point. His biggest knock is the lack of foot speed, but has a mass of other talents. Fantastic at reading the ball, spread from the contest, has a knack for winning free kicks (already fits into the AFL with the diving forward when tackled or drawing high contact. Not a fan of it, but has proven to work at every level by players in the past), has a decent enough kick - gets penetration and doesn't loop it up.
Jack DeMarte (WP #18) - Simply too good for the colts at this point as an overager. Should be playing in the reserves to push for league footy. He's just bullying kids out there with his 2 years of experience in the system. Cracking goal sense.
Daniel Gathercole (WP #16) - Really composed user of the footy out of the backline. Feel like he's grown an inch or two over the offseason, looks like he's also hit the weight bench. Should slot straight into the WA under 18 team this year, feel like a lack of versatility may hurt his draft chances, not a lot of want for pure backmen who don't break the lines.
Luke Michael (WP #7) - Undersized floating intercept defender. Reads the play exceptionally well, was key to WP hanging on, has magnet like hands. Really impressed how easily he makes everything look.
Noah Vanderwiel (WP #32) - Really crafty forward type, loves pushing up the ground to get the ball in his hands, loves crumbing at ground level inside forward 50. Hopefully the injury he sustained wasn't too serious (didn't look great), and he can keep pushing his case this and next year.

Aiden Riddle (C #40) - just bullied Sprigg off the park in the ruck, couldn't believe he was an underager. Claremont have really found one here, the kid is a gem. Just has that bit of X-factor about him in that he excites with his ruckwork and follow-up efforts. One to watch.
Harry Cole (C #3) - Great offensively, horrible defensively. Just didn't look interested in tracking back to help out without the footy, but found him extremely dynamic when moving the ball forward.
Kai Dehavilland (C #10) - Undersized midfielder, but plays with a lot of heart, something you don't get from every kid out there. Really makes the opposition earn their kicks. Would love to see him get his hands on the footy more.
Sam Gilbey (C #9) - wasn't at all impressed by Sam's game on the weekend but I know he has more to give and he'll be disappointed in himself I feel. Needs to find the footy more and use his pace and kicking ability to cut through opposing teams.
Daniel Curtin (C #21) - first time I've seen him play, and I get it. Just a freakish athletic kid, strong hands, great workrate, kicking is 50/50 whether it's elite or shocking, but if he keeps working on it I don't see any reason why he won't be a first-second rounder next year.
Cooper Childs (C #39) - undersized small forward, but just radiates the same type of energy as a Jason Castagna. High pressure, frantic workrate in the F50, loves a kick for goal.

Subiaco vs South Fremantle
Koltyn Tholstrup (S #23) - wow! Was really impressed by his contested work in the forward line early in the game, and his move into the midfield impressed me more. Moves so well for a kid of his size, cannot fault the effort and follow-up efforts in ground ball contests. Really loved what I saw, this kid will make it to the AFL
Lance Collard (S #10) - just so crafty with his ball movement and delivery inside 50. Just needs to find more open space and get his hands on the footy. Once he builds a little more confidence at this level (just his 5th colts game) he'll be unstoppable with his attributes
Robert Hansen jnr (S #13) - strongly built kid, liked what he brought to the table on debut. Needs some time and seasoning but has some nice ball skills and breakaway speed
Zac Sadowski (S #16) - strong key defender, a little undersized to play that role at higher levels but does his job with aplomb in the colts

Roan O'Hehir (SF #33) - wearing 33 like his younger sister (who is an incredible league footballer at 15 years old), reads the footy well, creates his own space at the contest, finds good options by hand and foot
Chase Bourne (SF #3) - if you told me he was the best player on the team I wouldn't have believed you. Really struggled to get into the game at all. I think the coaches need to find a balance between playing him in the mids and playing him forward. Didn't get near the footy in the first quarter and think that had an impact on the rest of his game. He needs the footy to have confidence, and leaving him stranded in the forward line when his teammates can't get it down to him just isn't the go. Should start the game in the middle, he and the team need him with the ball to have an impact.
Christian Wilson (SF #7) - love him. Such a smart kid, knows how to win the footy and where to be to receive it and keep the ball going forward. Unfortunately just too small to be considered at the next level.
Seth Connor (SF #15) - overager, can find the footy, smart positioning, but wouldn't be surprised if more than half of his kicks were turnovers. Souths need to find a better outlet, because he shouldn't be the one trying to hit targets.

Seth Connor has had a year off footy with an ACL so skills will only get better. Was Aquinas B&F as a year 11 and missed his draft year where his teammates Motlop & Warner were both taken in the draft. NGA listed. Keep an eye out for Connor as the year goes on.

Really impressed with Swan Districts first gamer Michael Durack from Karratha/Aquinas. Highly skilled midfielder. Collected 27 disposals. Must be a serious contender for the WA 18's squad.

Was probably told he wouldn't get a gig as an overager/wouldn't get a lot of mid time and requested to switch. Kids move colts clubs for opportunities all the time, he's not someone you should be worried about losing.

Midfielders medal?
Comps usually are nowadays but Laurisson (SD), Busslinger (EP), Torrent (PT), Hardeman (SD), Davies (CL), Baker (EP), Gathercole (WP), Logan (PT), Barbieri (S), Clarke (PT), Sinclair (P), Cleaver (EF), Cappeau (EP) figuring well as defenders.

Demarte (WP), Scaife (WP), Tholstrup (S), Tregenza-Cashell (PT) doing ok up forward and Soka (EP) playing well in the ruck with Broadbent (PT) just outside the top 40 so far.

Yeah I hear ya but I think it doesn’t necessarily give any indictation of Draftable talent. If thats what you are going for.
Example 1 - broadbent will be one of the first WA names called out and can’t even get on the list
Example 2 - Josh Browne would have won your award last year and did win the jack Clarke medal but look at where that got him in the draft.

Disposals are such a tiny amount of the bigger picture. Poor old defenders have to play out of their skin to get a mention and midfielders can get junk disposals and top votes. Forwards have to kick 4+.

Just my opinion but I think rankings like this should be separated- maybe be based on position and not disposals. Someone watching a game on tv can’t tell what a defender for example did off the screen to stop his player kicking any goals. At least recruiters I hope watch on person and maybe don’t even look at stats.

Can I suggest you arrange the leader-board by total votes and not average votes per game as you have done? That's how every leader in every vote tally is decided in reality. You can't go by average votes per game as you have listed or the leader will always be the one guy who only played one game and happened to get 12 votes. Retain the average vote per game column for people to look at and debate but the leader-board has to be arranged by total votes.

I'm not too bothered about the draftable side of things. Just hope people take the time to look at some other names apart from those that always get mentioned. Maybe a few late developers. I know that the people who contribute to this make a special effort to reward defenders. Laurisson got the maximum 12 votes for a 16 disposal game whereas Otto got 1 vote for a 29 disposal game.

I know I've already seen some players who must be considered for the WA 18's - Barbieri (S), Gathercole (WP), Durack (SD), Netherway and Barron (CL). They'll need another ruckman too without Condon so maybe big Tom Smith (SD), perhaps Broadbent's Peel team mate below ager Mitchell Edwards or if allowed an overager in Sokaa Soka.

It would help if the clubs themselves put defenders into their best player list more often too. Swans did yesterday with Laurisson - so 5 votes from SD and 7 from the observer which was me for that game.

But I agree stats don't mean as much as some think.

I appreciate the feedback and I hope we see backs/fwds and rucks feature plus some lesser lights

I probably will but I just want to see how many matches the leading players miss due to covid, the 5 week long state block, PSA and the usual injuries first.

Otherwise I predict that very few of the stars will actually make the top 40 and it will be somewhat misleading.

Fair enough but you can't have a player leading a season vote tally who's only played 1 or 2 games games for the year, personal opinion on draft-ability or not. The ability to keep showing up or proneness to injury is not to be completely disregarded.

Anyway I doubt very much that a player who gets 12 votes won't play another game unless he get's a season ending injury. But we'll see how it balances out between draftable kids who are clearly going to play less matches and would probably win if available all season and the lesser names who will grab a lot of votes while the state/PSA kids are absent. It might even be six weeks away with the 18's program.

But yeah I'll promise to make the change if it isn't balanced.

Just an out of the box thought that. Maybe it's worth considering applying an (average) to those who miss through state games to account for the lost games. I don't think you can do the same for injuries which theoretically are risks equally applicable to all players. However the few missing games through state responsibilities is a valid point. Each state game a player plays that causes them to miss WAFL gets their current average applied to their total. Or possibly vote and include the state game performances themselves in the board count so no played games are missed.
Edit: On reflection never mind that thought experiment, PSA makes it too hard. Disregard, carry on:)

And covid mate. It's ripping through some clubs pretty hard and the rest will feel it also at some stage. Peel yesterday had to make so many changes from the week before. A whole bunch of players including Carbone, Tregenza-Cashell, Hall, Draper, Finch and Wyburd and others all dropped out and that changed the game completely. I think Peel will give Claremont a run for the premiership but yeah, hardly any guys are going to play a full season one way or another. WA is always a little bit behind the times ya know. :)

Great effort by you Futbolista for taking the time to highlight any sort of voting system for the colts kids. With the live streaming as well free to all, hopefully the comp will get a lot more exposure. Thus creating a lot more chat from folk on hidden gems from each side who don't get the same exposure as the well known boys.

From an EF perspective, Cleaver will be off to PSA footy soon, that will be a huge out for the undersized, under age EF colts side. Good to see McMillan back in for some height and O'Reilly too, though the latter only had 2 possessions v SD at FF, hopefully he can find his feet and improve on that. There is a Geraldton lad from Towns FC on EF colts list Lachlan Morphew, he hasn't played as yet, not sure if injured or decided not to play. Read some where he was coming to Perth to go to Uni this year.

Round 2 notes:
Peel Thunder vs West Perth

Kane Bevan (WP #9) - just a class above at this level. Peel didn't really have anyone who could go with him. Would like to see him play some league footy at some point or even a game in the twos with a full go in the mids. He is unnervingly good at winning free kicks for a player of his size, it's moving from a skill into being something that's a little worrying, flopping around out there while being bigger than everyone else.
Jack DeMarte (WP #18) - get him out of the colts, he's too good. Was a good player as an underager, solid player in his draft year (still don't know why he missed the state squad, he was more talented than some but probably lacked the AFL attributes), a monster in his overage year. Needs to play reserves, 7 goals in 8 quarters of footy as a small forward is more than elite.
Daniel Gathercole (WP #16) - composed user of the footy by hand and foot, very athletic. I think he's a fantastic rookie prospect for a team that needs smarts out of the back half.
Luke Michael (WP #7) - just found himself in the right spots again. Really just does everything a medium sized defender should.
Ethan Logan (PT #19) - hello, DGB mark II. Seems taller than the 186cm listed on the WAFL site, fantastic reader of the play. Seriously smart intercept defender, super athletic. Fully on board, 2005 birthday so an underager, but was easily best on ground for the under siege Thunder.
Jackson Broadbent (PT #39) - rare to see a ruckman with so much confidence. Never seen someone his size at his age want to play on and wheel around and get the footy moving forward. One moment where he took a mark, played on, handballed forward, ran past for the 1-2, then hit up a target. Just brilliant. Think he needs to play a full game in the ruck to really dominate, but with Edwards in the team, it's better for Peel to use them in tandem.
Mitch Edwards (PT #37) - great young raw ruckman. When he gets a bit of muscle he'll be very hard to stop.

Peel Thunder vs West Perth (league)
Wade Derksen (PT #19) - some AFL team is going to be very very happy this November/December when the draft comes around, or even in the mid-season draft if he's eligible. Strong, athletic, incredible leap, decent kick of the footy. Everything you want from a second ruck/tall forward option. Super raw talent, but at 20yo, there's a lot of improvement.
Tristan Hobley (WP #21) - he's really matured since he was a "give the ball to me at all costs" midfielder for Subi's colts team. Plays on a wing, works hard both ways, can find the goals, and finds a lot of space. I think he's got a couple of handy AFL attributes. Turning 22 this year.

Swan Districts vs East Fremantle (league)
Elijah Hewett (SD #26) - love his confidence. Real outside attacking midfielder, great burst from the pack, always wants to be impacting the game. I'd like to see him keep his spot in the league side for as long as possible but probably won't get the chance to play as much midfield time as he did on the weekend. Gave away the 50m penalty that won the game for the Sharks, but thought he was extremely stiff.
Kyle Baskerville (EF #13) - probably doesn't have AFL attributes but an incredibly hard working ball-winning midfielder. He's basically Greg Clark without the big body, and a little quicker.

Was pretty stunned watching Derksen on the weekend. I can only assume he's a victim of the lack of vision on kids due to Covid because his all round agility is ridiculous for someone his size. Such a terrific kicking action for a big guy as well. Looked a cut above WAFL, and that's playing in a forwardline of almost only AFL talent...

What’s the general thoughts on Broadbent’s ability to split time between ruck and forward? Can he be a goal kicker?
