Review WA 2023 - Western Australia’s junior footy talent

Mate can you give a bit of a rundown of the South v East Perth colts game? Who is this Orlando Keleman (2006 DOB) with 3 goals on debut. Also Latrell Yarran is now at South instead of Perth. Also from a South perspective interested to know how Ferreira, Verney, Geier, Whan, Carroll, Abdul Pickett etc are tracking.

EDIT: Maybe PaulT73 or someone who follows East Perth can give us a Royals update. Would like to know if we're ever going to see PSA players like Jett O'Rourke and Xavier Walsh in action? I did notice that EP are investing in an older team again or at least that's what it seems like to me?
Ferreira and Verney both started each quarter inside. Both combined well and had impacts on the game with some nice I50 entries, and particularly in the last quarter with a surge to the final siren. Geier didn't play, Whan strong in defence and read the play well. Carroll on a wing. Abdul Pickett showed glimpses and contested well.

Awesome, thanks for the info.

Let's have a look at some of the core squads for 2023. Starting with last year's premiers Peel. A lot of familiar names here and I'm sure they will continue to get good viewership around the country on the streams and contend for the premiership again. I'm using the same system as 2022.

Let's have a look at some of the core squads for 2023. From Peel to West Perth - a mere 97km apart. Despite being at the beginning of a very dominant period of colts football, this year might prove to be a challenge for the club from Little Britain in the Northern suburbs. Many of their most high profile players are 2006 DOB.

Let's have a look at some of the core squads for 2023. Last year was purely a rebuilding year for Swans. They blooded numerous 2005 and 2006 DOB players and should now make a serious challenge for the top 5. A taste of things to come perhaps when they will arguably be colts premiership favourites in 2024.

Similarly to what I have done for the 2024 cohort below are my 2023 ones to watch out for in the PSA competition. Again, these boys will also get limited opportunity at colts level but should be the standouts for their respective schools and be in the mix for State 18’s. Again, please let me know if you think I have missed anyone.

Let's have a look at some of the core squads for 2023. Perth will struggle again this year I feel but they have those 7 or 8 genuine stars. Tough year ahead but it's all about finding players and turning them into good colts, good reserves, good league and perhaps even AFL quality. Enough names here that many observers will know.

Dan Curtin kicked 3.3 for Claremont colts in their practise match, don’t mind him playing there as he would likely play down back for the academy and national champs anyway. He has already proven himself there now is a good chance to show his versatility.
You make a very good point mate.

I see him now as a utility player rather than a straight out key defender. I guess folks are basing that defender tag on that 17's series and to a certain extent on that exhibition match last year....but that was a while back now.

I hope WA play him forward and back this year.

Let's have a look at some of the core squads for 2023. East Fremantle are a traditional WAFL colts powerhouse but last season their squad looked unbalanced with many players under 177cm. It will be interesting to see if their top end talent is in that height range again or spread more evenly.

Let's have a look at some of the core squads for 2023. It goes without saying that a club which hasn't lost a 16's/futures game in 2020,2021,2022 or 2023 are going to put together a powerful squad. I'm sure many here will recognise plenty of names.

Let's have a look at some of the core squads for 2023. Claremont have only missed out on a top 5 WAFL Colts placing five times in the last 50 years. Those years were 1975, 1989, 2002, 2018 and 2022. Their zone represents the cream of Perth's metropolitan area, including three PSA schools and a number of high quality tier two private schools. They also have arguably the best country zone with Albany in the south and Broome in the far north as key towns producing an immense amount of talented footballers. The Tigers won't miss out on the top 5 in 2023 colts.

Thanks as always for your efforts. Looking at these lists and the number of overage's, what is the maximum number of overage's a club can play on any weekend in WAFL colts.

That's what I would like to know and I can't get a consistent answer from anyone.

I was initially told that teams were allowed 1 Jan-June over ager based on special circumstances and 6 July-Dec over agers per match.

But I know that some clubs went way beyond that tally in some matches last year and I don't like to see too many because it skews the results considerably in the favour of team who pack their side with over agers.

So for example this season it might not be the teams that have the best 2005 DOB players who do best.

I would prefer to see it as a 1/4 over ager rule per game but 1/6 is ok I guess. Anything more than that isn't right and we get too many instances of over agers who dominate, not because of their talent but because of their size and maturity.

Agreed you would hope 4 maximum for the overages that were injured in their colt's season that makes sense as they missed out. Otherwise, any other reason you are blocking the talent in this case for the 2005 age group to be viewed possibly in the chase for immediate results.

Yep for sure - injury in their draft year, late DOB PSA players who missed most of the previous colts year and in special circumstances players who have finally come to city - especially Indigenous players who were nervous about leaving their remote town. In special circumstances also those who changed codes/new to Australia/footy etc

Let's have a look at some of the core squads for 2023. East Fremantle are a traditional WAFL colts powerhouse but last season their squad looked unbalanced with many players under 177cm. It will be interesting to see if their top end talent is in that height range again or spread more evenly.

I believe that combination to be correct. 7 in total. I tend to agree. Not a big supporter of stacking your team with 19 year olds to win a colts premiership. Certainly some circumstances is understandable - long term injuries, psa boys who have a compromised season, due to school football commitments etc. Some clubs flout the the rules more than others. Same thing can be said for some clubs that stack their futures teams with 17 year olds so they dominate year after year. Bigger picture needs to be considered and ultimately remember that futures and colts competitions are still regarded as development years.

I went back and had a look at last year's over ager games played. Observers can decide for themselves if there were too many.

(-) = indicates how many of those players played 10 or more

Over age players used

Swan Districts 16 for 80 games (3)
South Fremantle 13 for 103 games (4)
Perth 13 for 94 games (5)
East Perth 11 for 75 games (4)
West Perth 10 for 111 games (6)
East Fremantle 9 for 53 games (1)
Peel 8 for 89 games (5)
Subiaco 5 for 57 games (3)
Claremont 4 for 30 games (2)

Interesting Thanks

Already this year in scratch matches we have the following.

Swan Districts 8 over agers in one match

East Perth 9 over agers in one match

West Perth 7 over agers on one match
West Perth 7 over agers in another match

Peel 7 over agers in one match (& 6 in another)

Others have stuck to what we assume are the regulations?

Subiaco (6) & (5)
South Fremantle (5) & (5)
Claremont (6)
Perth (5)
East Fremantle (5) & (5)

I'm puzzled

This seems to be the WAFL regs looking at the rules c) Clubs are only permitted to play a maximum of seven (7) players turning 19 yrs of age in the current seasons calendar year in any match. A maximum of three (3) players (born 1 st Jan – 30th June) or up to a maximum of seven (7) players turning 19 years of age in the current seasons calendar year will be eligible to play in any match. i. For the avoidance of doubt, the seven players include the up to a maximum of three players born 1 st Jan – 30 June. d) Clubs are only permitted to list a maximum of ten (10) players turning 19 years of age in current season’s calendar year on the Colts 28 Points List. All other players not listed on the Colts 28 List will be automatically eligible for transfer.
