The WACA has steadfastly had nothing to do with contributing to a new stadium in Perth. In fact it went into it's shell and expoused in it's mediocricy principle and downsized it's arena.

Guess what. Now they're complaining that they can't cash in on the T20 craze. Now they want in on the new stadium.
Pffft. It's a bit like the Force when they couldn't decide where to play.
Anyway I hope this boosts the stadium along.
Is it too much to ask that cricket finally comes to the party ?


They should cash in, move to Burswood and sell the prime land for redevelopment

WACA - no mass public transport, no close bars or restaurants and crappy facilities

The only upside is the police station across the road to lock up the drunken bogan riots


Oh and bulldoze the dog track at the same time

Interesting. Queensland cricket wouldn't break even too often then.
 
Bit more movement on the sale of apartments:
At the weekend launch of the Gardens Apartment at the WACA, three apartments were reserved and selling agent Knight Frank said it was confident of hitting its sales target before Christmas.
The Garden Apartments, a joint venture between the WACA and local developer Ascot Capital, contains one, two and three-bedroom apartments on the boundary of the cricket ground. More than half the apartments have been pre-sold to WACA members in contracts worth $32 million.

what a disaster given cricket is intending on moving from the stadium
 
Not a fan of selling off land to redevelop grounds. Not unless a sustainable long term solution is found to ensure maintenance and general facility management is up to scratch (which is what a single stadium does).

The WACA has been neglected for decades and it's not just a case of a lack of major capital works projects renewing the WACA, rather it's simple maintenance that's been the biggest problem If they can't ensure year to year upkeep is up to scratch any major investments they do make with this money won't be worth it.

Perhaps 20Twenty at the new stadium can save the WACA, but i doubt it.

yep....poor infrastructure, poor maintenance, no public transport and no local restaurants, bars or cafes. The WACA and Ascot should be pulled down to make way for residential and move to Subi or share with footy at the new stadium.

What have you seen that suggests T20 can turn a profit at the new stadium?
Will the user get a clean stadium?

As an aside EH, I have been told (unsubstantiated) the rental for Adelaide Oval has gone from $1m pa to $9m pa & it is yet to turn a gig.

No don't think that is right, initially rental was going to be minimal but then the Adelaide City Council jumped up and down and demanded the AFL clubs contribute to the cost of maintaining the surrounding parks etc:rolleyes: . I have a recollection of about $1m pa per club (roughly $100K per game) as being mentioned but nothing concrete.
 
Just got this email from the WACA
Knight Frank are pleased to announce the official launch of Stage 1 of The Gardens Apartments at the WACA. As discussed at the recent AGM, the WACA Board decided in April to minimise the impact of the development on normal operations and matches held at the WACA Ground, including the forthcoming Ashes Series and the 2015 Cricket World Cup by reducing the size of Stage 1.

Stage 1 will now be a smaller, more boutique apartment development of just 76 apartments.

Interest in the complex has been strong and although we have not yet taken this new project to the open market, 56 per cent of the apartments have already been sold.

The project will be launched to the general public this weekend and supported by an advertising campaign through to the Ashes Test in December.

Because of strong sales already it has been decided to limit this release to 15 apartments. Prices for the remaining apartments will increase after construction commences in February 2014.

The 15 apartments that will be released will start from the following asking prices:

Facing Queens Gardens
One Bedroom x One Bathroom – $505,000 (Only one available)
Two Bedroom x Two Bathroom – From $710,000
Facing WACA
One Bedroom x One Bathroom –$625,000 (Only one available)
Two Bedroom x One Bathroom – $775,000 (Only one available)
Facing both WACA and Queens Gardens
Three bedrooms x two bathroom – $1,300,000 (Only one available)

Future of the WACA
The WACA Board is committed to the WACA remaining the home of cricket in WA and, in particular, to Test Cricket being played at the WACA even after the new Perth Stadium is opened.

The WACA will not host a Test Match against India next season but this is a one-off with the WACA scheduled to hold a Test Match every year through until 2020, which is as far in advance as the schedule has been developed.

For clarification, while Cricket Australia awards the Test Matches to each State/Territory, it is the WACA that decides the venue. This means that the WACA will remain the venue for all Test Matches. The WACA has secured rights to transfer ‘blockbuster matches’ to the new Perth Stadium and we have been consistent in saying that this would be a possibility. Beyond the occasional ‘blockbuster match’, there is no consideration being given to transferring the WACA’s schedule of cricket events to the new Perth Stadium.

As advised at the AGM, no sport will be allowed to be based at the new Perth Stadium and it is the firm objective of the WACA Board for cricket to remain at the WACA. The redevelopment is part of a long-term strategy to secure a sustainable future for the venue. At the same time, the WACA is investigating the involvement of other parties in the off- season use of the venue to optimise the investments in new infrastructure.

The WACA Board remains totally committed to its objective of seeing the WACA redeveloped in order to provide long-term benefits to the game of cricket, Members of the WACA and the cricket loving public of Western Australia and the rest of the world.
The bold part is particularly interesting, that no sport will be allowed to be "based" at the stadium. Means cricket cant uproot and lock out the stadium during the summer, but it would also mean AFL won't have complete control over the stadium during winter as well.
 
Ashes Tests not being 'blockbuster' is rather absurd.

In terms of crowds, its really not. If they move it to the new stadium it wont crack 30k. Besides even if it could and the WACA wanted to, they can't due to ICC regulations regarding Tests and drop in pitches not complying with the new Stadiums own rules.

In 10 years time East Perth will be a prime location to live, with the Waterbank development and the new stadium just across the footbridge. The WACA apartments are steep and only really appropriate for cricket fans but East Perth is hardly a lame place to live.
 
What kind of person would live there for $1.5 mil a year, in an apartment? What a lame place to live, inaccessible and inconvenient as well.

East Perth is a pretty good place to live.
 




You can listen to Lillee's interview straight after the decision here. Says they're about to press the button on starting the redevelopment which is great to hear. Interesting that he says that Tests wont be able to be played at Burswood because of the ICC rules on drop in pitches, that it has to be in the ground for the entire season.


Posted that in another topic. The podcast has been taken down but that's pretty much what Dennis Lillee said, tests cant be played at the Stadium.
