VICTORIA PARK ACES

The final expansion team saw the Victoria Park Aces born in 2008 - a name representing both the close proximity to the Perth Airport (flying aces), and the Burswood casino complex located within the city boundaries. The Aces play out of the suburban Lathlain Park, and entered the league in a striking black and orange striped design - which in the years following has gone from black to navy blue with the stripes being angled representing a plane taking off, in the same way the club aims to take off. The club represents not only Victoria Park, but the Belmont and Canning areas - Canning missing out on a standalone team to Victoria Park when the expansion was taking place, as Albany Highway runs through Victoria Park and into the City of Canning, thus the WAFC deemed that Victoria Park would represent the entirety of the south-east suburbs. Still without a premiership in their short history, the club has the likes of Charlie Cameron, Jake Waterman, Eric Mackenzie and Rhys Palmer on their playing list.
So East Fremantle lose part of their zone to these guys and don’t have access to Geraldton? That’s harsh. Man!

Freight, these designs are amazing and I love the concept too, however I was wondering if with Cockburns rise in population the competition could possibly include them as part of the expansion ?assuming the facilities for Fremantles new training ground and training facilities was to still go ahead only instead being for the Cockburn City football club. I dunno I thought with cockburns rich history in settlers/farmers it would be a neat little concept. I personally would call the team the - “Cockburn City Pioneers” ? But that’s just me. Anyway love the work.

As I said above, I could have done many different expansion options, but I wanted to limit this concept to twelve teams. :)

I suppose so.

Thank you everyone for following along with this portfolio! I hope everyone has enjoyed following along with it as much as I've had fun making it. Wanted to have it conclude yesterday (for WA Day) but oh well!

inb4 someone points out I have six interchange instead of four

As a future idea. Continue this portfolio but as a series. For example; VFL 2019, SANFL 2019 and maybe NEAFL 2019 or some variation of it. Please do it if you want to but, you don't have to do it. It's just a recommendation.

that didn't go so well last time I tried to do that (see: AFL 2029 as a follow up to AFL '99), like I got it done but it took nearly three years just because the motivation wasn't there, and I can see myself losing motivation for leagues where I have very little knowledge on. i'd love to see someone else take the concept on though for something similar for their own state but yeah, at this stage I can't see myself following on with this for other state leagues.

By the way, did Perth FC and Vic Park Aces share Lathlain Park in the 2008 and 2009 seasons? Are they the reason we had to fold and sit out the league until 2017?

Bastards. I hate them already. ;)

You've not only brought Perth back to their old home ground, but given them an actual derby rivalry in the process. The Causeway Derby, in fact.

Was Brad Sheppard drafted from South Fremantle?

And Son Son is about as Swannies as you can get!

But yeah, cool concept, some nice ideas and some sensical decisions and nice to see the Bullies not become Southern Sting or Rockingham Bulldogs...

I was thinking about this at work today, dreaming about some ones I'd do if I wasn't so lazy and actually learnt Illustrator, but what about say designing WAFL jumpers for a champions league style competition (so you'd do just four or so clubs), perhaps pre-season strips for all of them, or other random rounds. I feel this is a decent sort of canvas and you can take these identities and do a few other things. Good thing is you can now just make 4-10 jumpers or something and not have to design 25 plus.

Other idea is a Sunday League, as the ammos was called for most of its existence. Play under the idea of in the late 2000s, reserves football just didn't work, as players were getting clearances to country leagues to make money if it was obvious they wouldn't play league, not to mention the difficulty in having three grades play on a Friday night in a modern comp. Maybe even have a hypothetical situation where one or two teams predominantly play on weeknights for the exposure. So, as a result, the WAFC make the amateurs a notable second tier. So players can play there, wherever they want. Would be great to see really old clubs like North Fremantle, Wembley, South Bunbury get gigs, you could expand to smaller towns or have teams in the Hills or further north like Butler and possibly play around with 'resurged' clubs like Unions, Victorians.

No East Freo but he also has a few more players playing for clubs that they weren't drafted from.

This was a great portfolio. Heart torn out of my chest with EP becoming Leederville. I was holding out they would move to the WACA or kick out the Glory!

Did you think about teal numbers instead of white for the South West Lightening?

That was originally the plan, to have Perth Demons love to Leedy and East Perth move into the WACA but felt the option I took was more plausible. End of the day this folio is supposed to annoy people in a way though, like, this isn’t necessarily just what I want to see, but what I would foresee if the AFL never happened. I think certain areas like West Perth and East Perth would become redundant due to a lack of residency and booming areas that aren’t covered by clubs. I think clubs would sell their soul to a degree to be more marketable which is what you see happening in the AFL today.

Teal blended in too much I felt for the SWL, numbers need to stick out so white was the way to go IMO. Naturally, in terms of design, there’s never one right answer though.

Absolutely understand. Still really annoyed the Glory booted EP from Perth Oval. Leedy is probably just a little bit closer to the strip than Perth Oval is though.

Perth needed a central rectangular stadium though, and given the direction the WAFL has gone in, I think everybody wins. Leederville Oval is more than enough for the Royals at this point.

Interestingly enough I chose East Perth to support as a kid quite early on because they used to have (or still do, I’m not sure) a bit of an East Perth museum at Perth Oval and I checked it out once before going to a Glory game once (used to go to just about every Glory home game when I was a kid) and yeah, thought it was cool a WAFL club actually played there. This would have been 2001 or 2002, I think Big Unit™️ Troy Wilson was lining up for them at the time.

I sometimes think that if the WAFL was still the biggest show in town, clubs like East Perth and West Perth would never have moved. I really feel that they would have become more like a VFL club with lots of supporters from outside of the area, enjoying the cafes, bar and restaurants in Beaufort Street and Leederville. I remember Subiaco becoming a bit like that already, when I was young. Perth was shrinking though, I think with the changing demographic in that area, they would have been in deep trouble. Maybe they would have moved locations?

I also wonder with East Perth still pulling in the crowds, if the Glory wouldn't have played out of Perth Oval? I dunno where they would have gone. The WACA and Perry Lakes? The Western Reds at the old, low-tier WACA had set the precedent of how unpopular an oval field was for rectangular football; which is one of the real reasons the Glory went to a modified Perth Oval with temporary stands. They may have ended up at Perry Lakes, considering some of the crowds for rugby union at the ground, but with the athletics track covered with temporary stands on three sides. I actually wonder whether they would have ended up at either Bayswater's ground or the Velodrome in Floreat? Bayswater used to host WA state games, but more importantly had room to add the temporary stands around the ground. The Velodrome had a very large standing capacity but also had room for future development. As the WAFL grounds were being used and well-attended, we may have actually had a new rectangular ground in Perth a lot earlier, with the need to develop any of Bayswater, Floreat, Stirling, Perry Lakes or the Burswood Dome. Maybe, if the NSL had laid down seating stipulations, the proposed idea of the Glory playing indoor at Burswood would have been forced to come into fruition? The mind boggles.

I swear there was a proposal to turn the then vacant Leedy oval into the Glory's ground.
